What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by snausages on Dec 9, 2010 17:14:35 GMT 1, Couldn't find a thread for this topic already. So posting this here. Good read on the importance of the recent attacks on art and funding cuts.

December 8, 2010 Think fast: Which city was more important to the future of art last week, Miami or London?
Miami, of course, gave itself over to the frantic debauchery of the Art Basel Miami Beach week art fairs. And London? With its heavyweight dealers away, the British capital was hit by some of the largest student protests in recent memory. On November 30, as Art Basel VIPs fluttered down to Florida, young people were being set upon by baton-wielding police in Trafalgar Square.
The students were marching against the David Cameron government's proposal to raise college tuition fees and institute a program of stringent austerity that, among other things, involves cutting government funding to art colleges in the United Kingdom to zero. I'll say that again: Cutting funding for art colleges to zero.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Guy Denning on Dec 9, 2010 22:01:18 GMT 1, Police charge at Whitehall Drawing taken from a video.
Good luck to them all; it's good to see support from a wider public too. Though, in the eyes of the media and politicians, this is about university funding I reckon it's just the start of a bigger rumpus. About bloody time too.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Deleted on Dec 9, 2010 22:29:31 GMT 1, The Lib-Dems have gone back on their election promise - and all for the pursuit of power. No excuses. Lying bastards.
But, we had all go a bit fat and bloated on the excess and greed of the last few years. A bit of control won't do us any harm. Infact more art of better quality, in all its forms, may materialise as a result.
And if this politicises a generation then that can't be bad, particularly about issues that aren't just about the 'me'.
And these protests may well provide Class War with a few more pictures for their 'Hospitalized Copper' section.

Issue is though - how should university education be funded when the national debt is ยฃ1,000,000,000,000.00 (ish?).

Agreed.
And how much money are we spending on unwinnable wars on foreign soils to impose our beief systems? Where's the investment in this country, and its foundations.

We should concentrate not on the amount of money - more on the cost - of both engagement and non engagement......I give thanks that I don't have to make decisions like that.....
I think the coalition's banking on the students and the hard core band of agitators getting bored soon, tail end of next week it's almost Christmas after all.....

Not really the best way to run a country is it...put your head in the sand and hope it goes away.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Sundowner on Dec 9, 2010 23:13:17 GMT 1, Whilst I disagree with the government's policy and today's decision, there is absolutely no excuse for the level of violence that occurred (again) today.
Again, this was caused by the minority wearing balaclavas and masks throwing snooker balls and fireworks. Not fun to get stuck in the middle of at 7pm this evening.....

Are you Prince Charles?
So what got damaged? A few buildings and a couple of coppers.
So its ok for the state to use violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ireland etc, against the muslim community who are all viewed as terrorists; and yet when the individual reacts violently to the way they are being screwed it is wrong?
If a political party makes a promise in its election manifesto, and people vote for them, how else are they expected to vent their disgust when that party goes against its promise. No government can treat its voters with that much contempt and expect to get away with it.

No, I'm not Prince Charles (nice of you to ask though) - I just don't agree with violence full stop and there were some passers-by caught in the melee that were injured.
I'm not sure why you brought the tenuous link about the war up but thanks all the same

Totally agree, all they are going to do is alienate the public support they have by the mindless violence of the minority, when is the Banksy release by the way?

It is important to understand that the state uses violence to get across its way of thinking, especially when it doesn't agree with the behaviour of others. So when its population reacts in a similar way, why should it be surprised.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Guy Denning on Dec 10, 2010 0:03:33 GMT 1, "You do not question the right of the government to kill, to confiscate and imprison. If a private person should be guilty of the things that government is doing all the time, you brand him a murderer, thief, and scroundel. But as long as the violence committed is 'lawful', you approve of it and submit to it. So it is not really violence that you object to, but people using violence unlawfully"
Alexander Berkman
Have another - this time from the Millbank demo:

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by elwheel on Dec 10, 2010 0:05:15 GMT 1, The Tories are spinning myths.
They depend upon the public believing that there is no alternative to cuts and that they must happen in the lifetime of this parliament.
It is a myth that government debt has never been higher. It was more than three times higher after World War II โ and they still built the National Health Service and the Welfare State!
It is a myth that the UKโs debt is one of the worst in the developed world โ it is far higher in the USA, Canada, Japan and the major European economies.
Tax evasion costs the exchequer ยฃ15bn each year and the government spends approx ยฃ700,000 in marketing costs to highlight it. Benefit fraud costs the exhchequer approx ยฃ1.1bn per year and the government spends approx ยฃ17m in advertising to highlight it.
Who's looking after who?

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Briggs 74 on Dec 10, 2010 0:19:37 GMT 1, feel sorry for the genuine peaceful protesters out there
a few d**kheads have given the government a great excuse to turn to marshall law next time protests are planned
and if i'd been caught up in it on the way home after a long day working (as a taxpayer and therefore a part funder of students) i would have been tempted to get a flouro coat and baton and taken it out on some spotty waster myself....
