What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by elwheel on Dec 10, 2010 0:23:44 GMT 1, feel sorry for the genuine peaceful protesters out there a few d**kheads have given the government a great excuse to turn to marshall law next time protests are planned and if i'd been caught up in it on the way home after a long day working (as a taxpayer and therefore a part funder of students) i would have been tempted to get a flouro coat and baton and taken it out on some spotty waster myself....

A university education isnt a right for everyone, it should be there for the high achievers, not simple somehting your supposed to do after school.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Deleted on Dec 10, 2010 0:24:46 GMT 1, "You do not question the right of the government to kill, to confiscate and imprison. If a private person should be guilty of the things that government is doing all the time, you brand him a murderer, thief, and scroundel. But as long as the violence committed is 'lawful', you approve of it and submit to it. So it is not really violence that you object to, but people using violence unlawfully" Alexander Berkman Have another - this time from the Millbank demo:
Thank you for some great art, and a wonderful quote. I am now that little bit wiser, which is what makes us carry on.

Im so glad you dont run this country as you'll probably run it as a dictatorship, Sounds like your way or the high way! Its got nothing to do with them thinking they deserve to go to uni it comes down to; if you aint got the money or prepared to take on the debt then you cant go to uni. Being able to afford to go to uni has got nothing to do with the persons being high achievers does it. Once again another knob head thinking soley about money and not the BIGGER picture. PR1CK

You clearly skipped University. ;D If English is your second language I retract my comment.
No industrialized nation can survive without a well trained workforce and educated population. The days of manual labor are over in Europe. Everyone should have the right to get a good education to improve his live. Just look at America where most people graduate with a pile of dept that they have to pay off till they are 40.
English is my third language and I learned it in a free public school.

Awesome - I will put that on my CV as another language and print it in colour.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by raiden on Dec 10, 2010 4:42:54 GMT 1, Whilst I disagree with the government's policy and today's decision, there is absolutely no excuse for the level of violence that occurred (again) today. Again, this was caused by the minority wearing balaclavas and masks throwing snooker balls and fireworks. Not fun to get stuck in the middle of at 7pm this evening..... Are you Prince Charles? So what got damaged? A few buildings and a couple of coppers. So its ok for the state to use violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ireland etc, against the muslim community who are all viewed as terrorists; and yet when the individual reacts violently to the way they are being screwed it is wrong? If a political party makes a promise in its election manifesto, and people vote for them, how else are they expected to vent their disgust when that party goes against its promise. No government can treat its voters with that much contempt and expect to get away with it.
Brilliant point.
I must say, this generation is a "new lost generation."
Sadly, I don't see any of the problems getting better. All that is being offered in Western thought are band aid solutions that never seem to address wealth inequality and corporations subverting governments for their own interests.
How can we expect peaceful protests, when peaceful protests are increasingly dismissed and belittled by corporate news outlets? I'm not advocating violence, but I also am not overly optimistic that even the non-violence of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. would have the same efficacy in our modern world.
This made American news not because it was a bunch of students protesting, but because it was violent protesting and involved a Royal - which in our media society produces interest / entertainment, which therein receives coverage.
I'm not saying I'm condoning the actions of the violent few, but it does give me pause to consider if the philosophies of non-violence espoused by MLK and Gandhi would have had the same force if applied to any modern issue given the bread and circuses of reality television and corporate media.
Personally, I don't know why you all haven't lopped off the heads of your monarchy like most other sensible nations. Wouldn't you be able to finance a whole lot of art students tuition rather than spoiled Royals if you did?

no im just speaking from exp, half the people on my course were a waste of space, got crap degrees when they left and have no better job hopes than before they came.
they just came there to drink and party, turned up late or never to lectures, missed assignments, and generally wasted the taxpayers money who gave them the chance to be there in the first place.

I never said they shouldnt get a good education? i said that university wasnt always the best way. You often learn more on aprentiships, on the job training and just starting at the bottom and working your way up, by the time your mates left uni youve been working for 4 years, and dont have loads of debt..
Just takes the businesses to take on more school leavers, rather than asking for a degree.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by nex on Dec 10, 2010 11:50:53 GMT 1, 'university education isnt a right for everyone, it should be there for the high achievers'
maybe you should look a little closer into the wide range of courses university's provide and the empowerment that said education gives to those who in previous generations never dreamt of doing that. I guess at 23 and driven by money, caring about how the less fortunate do is not high on your list of priorities.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Deleted on Dec 10, 2010 11:51:25 GMT 1, why shouldnt students pay more if everyone else is aswel.
Because the government has actively encourged students/young people to attend university, making it seem as if the only way to get ahead is to carry on learning.
It will be the less well off that will be discouraged.
If the government wants to get it's money back on their 'investment' what is wrong with getting it back through the tax system, particularly if attendance at a university has allowed you to get a better job as a result. You earn more money, you pay more taxes. Shoulder some responsibility, and appreciate the benefits your education has given you.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by I like pictures on Dec 10, 2010 11:51:54 GMT 1, Often the degree isn't important to employers it shows a level of commitment to the cause, which employers would rather than school leaver who decided they'd had enough and didn't want to commit to further education and could do the same with the job they are about to give them. I know grads can do the same thing and quit within a week but i think they generally would stay longer. Always exceptions to the rule though.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by kel on Dec 10, 2010 12:09:21 GMT 1, I know I shouldn't but f**k it I am going to throw in my point of view. I have to side with Grafik here. There are far to many school leavers who view University education as a 3 year piss up and just join to get out of starting a Job. We have had alot of University educated people in our company and for every outstanding employee from higher education there is also one who has been allowed to slip through.
I have many examples but one from last week is about a relatively new employee whom started 12 months ago. He has been moved around the company that much due to his ridiculously poor common sense he is now on the call centre. This is a lad who gained a 2.2 in engineering but came to work last week in his slippers. He didn't realize he had not put his shoes on.
IMO this is why they should be charging ยฃ9K fees to deter these waste of spaces. The underlying problem comes down to work ethic. We have a lot of eastern European workers in our company because of 1 reason. They work, they don't sit back and moan that the world owes them. No point smashing London up go and get a f**king part time Job which will pay towards your fees.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by adewilliams on Dec 10, 2010 12:16:32 GMT 1, The Tories are spinning myths. They depend upon the public believing that there is no alternative to cuts and that they must happen in the lifetime of this parliament. It is a myth that government debt has never been higher. It was more than three times higher after World War II โ and they still built the National Health Service and the Welfare State! It is a myth that the UKโs debt is one of the worst in the developed world โ it is far higher in the USA, Canada, Japan and the major European economies. Tax evasion costs the exchequer ยฃ15bn each year and the government spends approx ยฃ700,000 in marketing costs to highlight it. Benefit fraud costs the exhchequer approx ยฃ1.1bn per year and the government spends approx ยฃ17m in advertising to highlight it. Who's looking after who? good post

Benefit fraud costs the exhchequer approx ยฃ1.1bn per year and the government spends approx ยฃ17m in advertising to highlight it. Who's looking after who? good post

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by boaty on Dec 10, 2010 12:21:12 GMT 1, I know I shouldn't but f**k it I am going to throw in my point of view. I have to side with Grafik here. There are far to many school leavers who view University education as a 3 year piss up and just join to get out of starting a Job.
With unemployment high - it's best the student age population attend educational facilities, if they can.....otherwise more will not have jobs now or in the future....

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by christyben on Dec 10, 2010 12:23:41 GMT 1, In my other work, I ended up making this yesterday.
www.guardian.co.uk/education/video/2010/dec/10/student-fees-protest-london-video
It was a very strange day, on a personal level it feels the last 6 months have almost been cartoon-like.
(apologies if its not about urban art, but there is some funny graff in there)

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by Daniel Silk on Dec 10, 2010 12:40:07 GMT 1, Obviously this discussion is going to get a bit heated, but please don't abusively attack other people. Try to keep calm and respect that other people might have differing opinions to yours.
Thank you!

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by alexnh123 on Dec 10, 2010 12:58:36 GMT 1, in the interests of diplomacy; I also agree that this may help to sort the wheat from the chaff to some extent. Smart youngsters, (regardless of their own background/class) who have the ability, and the belief that they will use a university education to their advantage and gain rewarding employment as a result should still have the confidence to go for it. The debt in question is borrowed to some extent through loans; yes it means there will be more to pay back, but it remains that student debts really shouldn't be thought of as a burden in the same way as regular debt, they won't affect your getting a mortgage, credit ratings etc, and you can pay them off gradually over a long period of time, once you're in that high paid job that you earnt. If you donโt get that job, you donโt pay it (21k threshold) What's more; there now comes a return to university becoming a serious place that regains some of itโs lost credibility. Another way of looking at it; could universities become a more desirable place to go now that they would become a more exclusive place to be. I hope the higher fees do equate to a higher standard of education because there lies a real flaw if they don't.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by grafik on Dec 10, 2010 13:00:12 GMT 1, why shouldnt students pay more if everyone else is aswel.
Isnt the plan that you are lent the money and dont start paying it back till you are in a job paying over 21k a year?
i wonder what that would equate to if you were to pay it back in higher income tax? I think they take 7% of your paycheck, but im not sure on that. and thats at the moment, not with the 9k rise.

What London's Student Protests Mean For the Future, by grafik on Dec 10, 2010 13:02:41 GMT 1, 'university education isnt a right for everyone, it should be there for the high achievers' maybe you should look a little closer into the wide range of courses university's provide and the empowerment that said education gives to those who in previous generations never dreamt of doing that. I guess at 23 and driven by money, caring about how the less fortunate do is not high on your list of priorities.
my comment was born from the amount of people who go to university just to get drunk, they dont care what degree they do, or what grade they get out of it, they just want to have a fun 3 years at the taxpayers expense.
i rephrase 'high achievers' to 'people who are actually motivated and driven'.
