" It started off as a painting of a torturer (the renderer of enhanced interrogation)
I wanted to get the idea of the dehumanising nature of the torturer. Of what the torture does to the actual person dishing out the torture. I was hoping to show the torturer as also being an unknowing victim of their own inhumanity. So it also became about the victims of military torture generally with this person being both the torturer and the tortured. I wanted him to seem simultaneously strong and powerless.
It's been so long since I painted the piece that I can't remember all the ideas that informed it (except the technique of Goya's paintings). "
