Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by carlito on Jul 7, 2008 16:12:46 GMT 1, no doubting the image is cool, and I reckon it'll look mint but 600+ quid for such a largeeee edition reallly sticks in the back of my throat and in the card holder in my wallet in the scheme of things whats a 315 edition? micallef's 1 colour JD 300 quid at source? and not particularly well printed- an edition of 500. i'd say they priced this 100% correctly, as they are still for sale. no profit for resellers so all off to collectors hopefully
true enough - just a lotta dosh

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by aj on Jul 7, 2008 16:12:55 GMT 1, Out of interest, I don't own any Faile's, I don't get it I'm afraid, might as well just frame up the cover of an old Marvel Comic IMO. Not having a go at anyone for liking this type of art, each to their own, just not for me.
Thought i was the only one who didn't get Faile! reminds me of the stuff the retail poster shop ATHENA used to sell in the early 90's. along side cats hanging from trees, monkeys picking there noses and well toned men holding baby's ;D

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by hlarmy on Jul 7, 2008 16:14:42 GMT 1, Just to stir things up, I'd go for neither. In that range, it won't be long until you'll have more choice of signed Banksy's (rather than unsigned, which personally I wouldn't buy either way).
I've tried to understand the attraction of the likes of Faile and Micallef but I just don't get either (having said that, I don't understand a great deal of contemporary art ... yet!). From an investment point of view, my philosophy is to buy what you like and are happy to look at every day and keep your fingers crossed that it goes up rather than down in value over the next 5 years

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by Backpack Punk on Jul 7, 2008 16:15:55 GMT 1, Give me an unsigned Girl with Balloon over any Faile image any day, but after that I would take a full color Butterfly Girl over any other unsigned Banksy.

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by aj on Jul 7, 2008 16:21:54 GMT 1, Or just buy because you like and don't worry about it going up or down in price! most things we buy for enjoyment will only ever depreciate so it's not something i expect from material things i buy.
Also! Im glad banksy does unsigned as it means i still have a chance at having a banksy on the wall.
For the image.

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by angryboy on Jul 7, 2008 16:26:40 GMT 1, If I wanted a particular Banksy image on the wall and couldn't afford the signed one I reckon I'd go for a £29.99 ebay canvas over a £1200 unsigned print.

Lot to be agreed with here angryboy! I have a 'knock off' canvas edition of girl with balloon and Queen Vic, both cost about £25 each and they look mint. BUT they just don't give you that warm feeling inside the same way a 'proper' Banksy does!

Maybe not the best reference using athena, but they used to sell those crazy comic style posters made up of different shaded spots. Just reminds me of that is all.
I do like his dogs though.

I imagine it makes a big diference and a warmer feeling if you bought your banksy at source rather than on the bay

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by robinbanks on Jul 7, 2008 16:46:12 GMT 1, Id personally have most banksys over failes, i do like failes work but not as much as Bs work, but im not really a fan of unsigned work, just like an expensive poster, sadly signed banksys are out of my price range
I don't follow that at all. The signed screen prints are exactly the same as the unsigned one's, are they not? If you think that the unsigned one's are expensive posters, then doesn't that just make the the signed one's fucking expensive posters with an autograph in the corner? No?
Surely the sig doesn't add any artistic merit to the print?

Roy Lichtentein has sold pieces for upwards of $5m whilst still alive. I reckon Faile will be quite happy to be stuck in the same boat as him, even if Athena is in the same sentence (boat?).

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by maadbeats on Jul 7, 2008 17:07:52 GMT 1, I would take signed Failes over unsigned Banksy. First because most of the runs are extremely low compaired to Banksy. Secondly lots of hand embellishments. Third, the Patricks are great guys that I have talked with numerous times. And lastly, There stylie is unmatched. call me old fashioned...but the only thing that really matters out of all of that is that u rate their style above B's
True. I have been a fan since you could get there art for $100. Wasnt any money to made, low hype. I just dug it. plain and simple. I was mearly listing all the other factors i find enjoyable about there work. Especially hand embellishments and low runs. I like having stuff others can get. Knowing there are 500 others that have the same things and possibly one or two in my town would bug the hell out of me. Whoever can twist that how they want. But I am in it to have it hanging on the wall. I wont buy anything I dont like visually. You never know if the economy can bust and all this paper will be worthless. Then you could be stuck with a whole bunch of art you hate. Dont get me wrong sometimes the portfolio changes, like your tastes. So there can be a revolving door. I have 8 Failes that i will NEVER let go of unless I'm forced to live on the streets.

No! thats exactly what i think it looks like.
Don't tell me you don't see the resemblance.
Or do you find it hard to except that artists are influenced by other artists

no, quite right. i'm sure Faile and D*Face had a profound influence on the work of Roy Lichtenstein.

Unsigned Bansky vs Signed Faile, by angryboy on Jul 7, 2008 17:13:43 GMT 1, I imagine Faile would be happy to admit they're influenced by Roy Lichtenstein. Not that I've ever read of them saying it but there's big shades of him in their work.
I don't think it's a negative for their work to remind one of Lichtenstein though, he's is one of the great pop artists.
I reckon the mention of Athena images from the 80s would suggest that no one thinks D-Face and Faile came first.
