Real art collectors , by gatecrasher on Aug 31, 2014 6:04:28 GMT 1, I'd class myself as an art collector as I've collected for 20 odd years, just not particularly urban art. My Banksy count stands at zero
My take on this forum is that if you accept that it's the interweb so there's always people talking shit and also it's about art, so there's people that see awesome when I see shit and it's about money so there's people posting to their own financial agenda.
I accept the above, because there are some genuinely nice people on here who have shared their time and knowledge with me and made me a better collector

My 2 cents
I didnt read the threatening comments but as whole I can understand this thread, I enjoy coming on this forum and sharing some artists that dont get the time of day in here normally due to an substantial amount of Banksy sale, argument, etc threads that get more play than actual informative artist threads which usually disappear after the same threads keep coming back in one form or another. I actually dont come back lately as much for this reason, but its the nature of things. Overall though Its a great place to gain perspective from a relatively newer base of collectors.

Real art collectors , by johnnyh on Aug 31, 2014 9:33:15 GMT 1, Have to agree to a degree with Graffuturism and suppose this was also partly DrJimmy's point in his orig post in that there are an awful lot of forsale threads and people who only come on the advertise or sell stuff and likewise that market place has also attracted a more frequent dodgy sales items.
Meaning that some of the interesting art threads get a bit lost or not viewed which is both a shame and also a bit annoying in that people miss out on interesting pieces and discussions on art etc.
Something for the Mods and Silky to look at would be having two active thread buttons one that is sales and one that is not. I really like the info stuff and being out in China love the street work photos by Mikey D and Feralthings which are superb and really keep things going for me as well as the odd row and general bรกnter. On sales I am a bit caught really as have bought a fair few pieces through the forum and in general have all been good etc but I do really get annoyed by them as well particularly regardless of piece those that just come on to flog something or the likes of WCP who just pop into promote a new copy. But members and galleries etc do not mind and often enjoy the threads. Likewise the info on or pics of the shows I think are brilliant as would never hear or see.
Think part of the problem is that suppose with time etc some people are only interested in the ads/classifieds but do think there are plenty more who like the info. I used to read and enjoy your posts Graff not always in agreement but that's a good thing to hear a different view on things. I did learn a fair bit as well which is great
not sure a point to this rant so will shut up.

Real art collectors , by Lroy on Aug 31, 2014 9:55:12 GMT 1, I read this post at 4 o'clock in the morning on my phone (the author has courage and a good finger to start a thread like this, on a phone, lol). This title means absolutely nothing.
There is no collectors coming from X-Files, all are real and... collectors ! Of course, we have collectors (here ? na ) who send their broker to buy and invest as they would buy a yearling at the Deauville sales! But we are not all Wildestein ( Daniel was a purist and loved art ) , Weritheimer and Maktoum Bro' who buys for competition and investisments.
A "true" (lol) collector has no limits and buys with what he has in his - empty - wallet, full of quids, or bills. For I, these are stickers of Banksy or flyers or a tenner ;(..., , with money I have or not - I am in debt because of this ! And as anybody in addiction, maybe sick and ill if I do not get what i wanted at the second ( F5- lol ) . Remnants of childhood, but this, everyone knows that collectors are big kids (said with respect.).
No, what irritated me (except the title without meanings: is there real drinkers, fake drugs addcits or real counterfeiters?), it is this way to attack Banksy collectors (I also find the price of its mind boggling prints). If these people have money, they buy! Me too, I would like to "own" a banksy, and then where is evil? It would be the hour of grace! And yet I buy, instead - not even for flip -, most of the other artists, knowing that I make mistakes, because question "investment", half, if not 3/4 of street-art artists or atists ( it is like for punk , a lot of bad artists follow the street-art movement to sell their rubbish. I could do that iwth my paintings too, lol ) will not hold the road and, maybe will finish in the attic !
It reminds me of collectors of rock or punk, discs or badges and t-shirts, or comics, which were never put posters on the walls (mine, lol) because of pins, or never played their Lps or singles, in order to keep them to make them work or sell , in the future ! No future. Mine are in a state of hell, but this is not because of that, that I'm not a collector, as well as the other custodians of relics, above. Collectors covet and collect thats all( what a quote lol ) . A huge passion! Helping to live. Art saved me. I wrote one day ( ah ah ) : What refuge? In the art. ( need a roof and walls too ) ...
Bon appetite ! ( with the translation, lol ) . Thank you...

Real art collectors , by JAlternatiรณn on Aug 31, 2014 10:05:58 GMT 1, That's just made me realise that I have always been a collector of something... as a kid it was stamps then moved on to records/cds until I had literally thousands of them, I have a DVD collection in the hundreds and started buying art about 10 years ago, having been wowed by Dali and the pre-raphaelites in childhood.
Maybe I'm addicted to collecting?

Got some questions:
1. Are you fatherxmas? 2. What happened between Warmgun and you. 3. Call out names of the guys who wear their nose high, because they own Banksys.

Real art collectors , by sgolby on Aug 31, 2014 11:51:28 GMT 1, Just my two cents...
I have no idea what you are talking about @einstein41. I am new to the collecting game as far as collecting prints are concerned. I have been an art fan since high school. I don't pretend to be an expert. I own one Banksy, despite being able to afford more of them, I simply love the image, and it is flags, which somehow many people don't appreciate. I buy what I like, and appreciate WAY more than I buy. I don't really care about what others have to say about a piece or whetherit increases in value. However, I have never gotten the sense that anyone looks or talks down to me or anyone else based on the number of Banksy's I have.
Sometimes there is disagreement over a piece which I like and others don't, but that's fine, it is all part of discussion, which is what this board is about. What is aggravating is all the "beef," there is on here. Then again it is an "urban" art forum, and anything urban has beef, it is part of what the whole urban thing is if you ask me, and I am from Brooklyn, so beef is something which I am used to, but still annoys me.
Art is personal. it is about the viewer, and the artist. I may feel something for an artist or believe one is better than the other... Take Rudoph Bauer for example, I believe he is better than Wassily Kandinsky... but that means he is better for me. There is nothing Absolute about art, and therein lies it's beauty. Yes, if you are in this for financial gain then obviously you care about the appreciation in value of your art. Personally I could give two f**cks about whether a print I buy is worth $600 the day after I buy it for $300, because quite frankly $300 means nothing to me. If it does, and if you are scraping money together to buy a piece because you think it is going to increase in value, my advice to you is don't buy it. Keep your money, you need it. If on the other hand you are buying it because you appreciate it's beauty and it brings you happiness then buy it, because happiness is priceless.
I said something along the lines of if you are collecting because you want to make money then you are not that smart. You should collect because you appreciate the art... not for some philsophical reason, but because you stand a better chance making money on investments that actually produce serious gains over time. Art is hit or miss and the number of pieces which appreciate seriously over time will likely not make up for the loss you take on those that don't.
Peace, and happy Sunday to all...

Real art collectors , by dotdot on Aug 31, 2014 12:11:00 GMT 1, As a provocation it did more than its job.
Art ... Well it's amorphous.. You see it , you don't, you love it , you hate it.. You... We they whatever who ever.
For some of us that you becomes plural and the collection tends to change shape as a result ( 'pitfall' for any collector)
Collectors .. Aye well they be some of us. Who they are, what they bought, and when.. Does it matter ? not really. Hey if you bought a canvas from brp from the nick walker show , we're you lucky ?
Or at an earlier sg , and you bought that jd instead of a b , were you lucky?
Luck in art collecting is... Not something most of us wish to dwell on... For too long.

There are plenty of people on the forum with agendas hyping running up prices gallery's hiding behind user names but that's all part of the mix and the fun.
Iv met and had deals with loads of people on the forum and they have all been amazing and learn new stuff almost every day.

Maybe if you said Malevich I could understand
It has been said more than once that i am a blasphemer... But agaian... His art says something to me that kandinskies never did... It's personal...

Thats Untrue and shows that youre quite new to the game. Art collectors are very smart, some are very rich and have a found a way to channel their money into something that appreciates rapidly, while is visually and emotionally appreciated. Money is either taxed at the bank, or its in a Bacon, or Koons or even Banksy.
Lets get off of prints for a minute, and talk about longevity of collecting ART. One has to make an educated purchase, have some sense of the market and an exit strategy, obviously a hunch or a plan for the artist, mixed with emotion about the piece of art. Thats when you get into this and start making good choices. "Get In Early" is something you hear a lot. I know collectors who started in street art, turned into dealers who are dealing in pieces worth far more than my house. I consider them very smart as they seem to make the right decisions time and time again, thats not luck, thats business. They know who to push, who to buy from and who to sell to.
I honestly feel art prints, are the new sneakers, and it was only time before that ebay culture cracked in on it. Theres an abundance of young people that love them, theres an abundance of young people that want to make a couple bucks tomorrow off of their purchase today, and theres those that are holding on til peak periods before letting them go. Then of course, there are those that are complete fans and may hold on forever.
I suppose im a hybrid of a few of these people. I buy original art from artists I feel will make it, and the art I bought 10 years ago for next to nothing, have begun to sell at a good rate today, ive begun my exit strategy. I buy prints from artists in which I like the work, but I dont have enough faith in them to drop money on a original, and if I see a deal on a print (cost), and think I can re-sell it or use it in a trade, I buy that too. I never flip. ever. Or at least not on purpose, sometimes we see something we cant live without and the newest purchase has to go. I buy originals from artists I have an emotional connection with and feel I can make a plan for. Thats why I have or had original works from Mars-1, Sam Flores, Mike Giant, Matt Barnes, DalEast, Graham Curran, and most recently, Sandra Chevrier. (Go Canada!). Keep in mind, Im a curator (shameless plug so I can help these artists when I show them, and try and gear their popularity in my city, that helps them, myself and others who are dealing with the same artists.
Art is an interesting business, and an even more interesting culture. Just like anything, the money shouldnt be spent unless its there. never go into debt for art, and always think of the longevity in what you purchase and the artist themselves.
Whew, good morning.

Real art collectors , by Gard on Aug 31, 2014 15:42:46 GMT 1, When I first came to this forum (I think it was 4 years ago) it was about art and people discussed the newest walls and the commented on the new exhibitions. Today none cares about the exhibitions and it's all about the prints. Not just Banksy prints, but prints by "artist" that has never done anything and just released an overly hyped print in edition 300 with 6 color ways, 3 different versions on aluminum, some canvas versions, hand sprayed on paper (or found object, preferably booth) and of course hand finished versions. These artists doesn't add anything to this forum or the art scene (don't know if it fit in here, but it ruins the forum).

Real art collectors , by Hairbland on Aug 31, 2014 17:07:19 GMT 1, I missed this thread as I'm on holiday in Nicaragua where internet is dodgy currently in Leon where much Sandinista fighting went down...great street murals.
It seems the thread started as a bit of a diarrhea explosion as opposed to allowing for profound critical thinking and discussion. Never a great way to start.
I like this place. It is not difficult to sift through the hype for the substance.
