DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by Deux Spin on Sept 4, 2012 11:15:15 GMT 1, Hi all,
I've bought a number of pieces in the past directly from BAST / ESPO and have never been charged with Tax. This time I received a Faile print (Paradise in Yellow) and 1 week later a letter from FED EX asking for ยฃ36.10 in tax. I remember there being a thread here about taxes, is Art exempt? What's the story here?
Cheers, Cedric

DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by Happy Shopper on Sept 4, 2012 11:32:13 GMT 1, You might want to consider that Faile marked the value of that piece as $200 instead of it's true value. Be careful of opening a can of worms !

DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by Deux Spin on Sept 4, 2012 11:52:17 GMT 1, True. But now that the print is in my possession, I wonder whether FedEx will chase after the money.

If you don't pay they wont deliver anything else you have sent by them (unless you change your name slightly).
But yes they will 'chase' it like any other company.
Also the talk of avoiding/not paying tax on here is a little unpatriotic. If someone marks the value down it is illegal.

true, it happened to me although i had paid already and it was their mistake. It took weeks and many emails/phone calls to stop the procedure. And it was only for about 20 euros... they have plenty of people paid just to do that so watch out...

Books are tax exempt, OG's are not. OG's and certain limited edition prints qualify for the reduced VAT rate of 5%. For the import taxes of a package to be calculated correctly, the sender would have to fill out the shipping documents correctly, which is extremely rare because it's not really in the interest of US sellers to educate themselves about our particular system. Therefore, you'll almost always incur 20% VAT and have a nightmare claiming back 75% of what you were charged. Count yourself lucky that you've got away with paying import taxes in the past and got away with incurring over ยฃ230 this time (@ 20%), although this particular Faile print qualifies for the reduced VAT rate of 5% so it's true tax + admin fee should have been around ยฃ70. If you don't pay the thirty odd quid, you'll be pursued and eventually blacklisted.

DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by rockhopper on Sept 4, 2012 12:44:05 GMT 1, ยฃ36.10 Doesnt sound too bad to me on a faile which would have been at least a $700 value. I had a parcel from the States last week which was well under $200 and it cost me ยฃ26.88 to collect from the Royal Mail, ยฃ8 of which was RM's rip off handling charge! Oh and at least FedEx delivered your package, RM wont release until paid!

DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by Deux Spin on Sept 4, 2012 14:00:18 GMT 1, Thanks for all the posts, and updates of your experience. I called FedEx this afternoon to get it sorted, basically paid the ยฃ36 - if it was listed as "art" rather than a screen print I would have only paid 5%. Not complaining as it is worth more than $200. Happy days.

DUTY TAXES from US to UK, by wave on Sept 4, 2012 18:07:56 GMT 1, You can still get away with paying 5% on a screen print if it has 'unique hand finishing' making each one 'technically individual'. Has worked for me a couple of times.
