Over the last few weeks I have felt like i have been given a lucky escape from a brain washing cult....

I have a large-ish collection of art both in portfolio and on my walls, and a real love of Banksy that has been nutured over many many years. Over the last few weeks i have been drawn to Hirsts Spot prints more and more... I feel like they have been popping up wherever i look and quietly calling to me to 'buy me, buy me, buy me' I have enquired into a couple of different prints priced between £3k and £5k and have come dangerously close to pulling the trigger...

Then I suddenly thought... 'HANG ON' what are you doing, I have always thought that Damien although clearly an icon who will be remembered in art history was a money grabbing guy who has churned out millions from very few ideas... What on earth was I doing nearly spending £5k on a print of some dots with his signature on the bottom?

Now I know that many people on here like Damien's work and i am in no way saying that they have been duped but i certainly feel like i have had a lucky escape, If i want dots on that wall I'll buy a poster, but my hard earned art cash fund will be spent on something else, probably a Banksy with an image that I love, makes me smile and will grace my walls for years to come.

^^ I think we have just returned to the arguement about spending £4k on a unsigned Banksy GWB when you can buy a repro for £50! Same image but does it really give you as much pleasure?

Well said. I'm glad for you. For me, there is no real excuse/reason to buy any of his recent spots painting prints (even if $ is not an issue). He has produced some much more unique and interesting prints in the past (butterflies, pills, skulls etc). If I would like a Hirst print, it would be one of them not the spots (nor the spin paintings)...

Spot Challenge print size just confirmed at a massive 1555x1397mm!!(61x55in)

They must be the biggest Hirst spot prints to date?? Bigger than LSD and Valium

Tip of the cap to DH- would have been so easy just to churn out another 150x150mm Manifold edition and be done with it. These are going to be seriously impressive- just need to find a suitable load bearing wall....

WOW framing won't be cheap but with an edition so very BIG it will look great. You'd better clear a wall now!

Does anybody know, how many different 'Dot Prints' has been already published by Hirst? It seems to me, like he is flooding the market with the prints. Some of them are nice, but I´m not sure if they are worth the price. Is there still a market for the prints, or is it hard for the gallerys to sell them?

The size edition seems to be various between 55 and 150. Prize starts at 1500 GBP? Is this correct?

I'm can't answer you about Hirst, but some artist sell prints at a very high price, as Faile who sold their last print series on their own website for $1750 each, the edition was something like 20 for each prints. And as you know Hirst is much more famous than Faile...

Damian Hirst is definitely a good artist, but I'm not sure prints are a good investment if you want to make money, if you want one cause you love it just go for it, but it's another thing

I think over 1500 various 'images' broken down into editions, total amounts I don't know

The prints are often one price for the first few of the edition and then the price increases as they sell out

I don't know how many editions of these have been done - but in large formats, they look incredible.

I've got a THC, which is about 210cm x 110cm, hanging in the lounge and get more comments about it than anything else in the house (and we've got some far more significant pieces hanging about).

They are easy on the eye, iconic and crowd pleasers...

Regardless of the investment potential (who knows if they'll make money)... If you like the look of them, I'd definitely recommend getting one... but don't get two!

Hirst said that before - got all the resellers excited, they bought quite a few of each on the back of what his studio said, then they released another series, followed by another, followed by another.

Outlawed: When I say "not many", I think there's 10-15 different editions that are a more desirable size. (From A3 - pretty huge)

Joe: You're right... but they are supposed to be an endless series, so you know what you're getting into. It's getting a nice one at a price that suits that's the hard part ! The next release could be better and cheaper, but perhaps not, so you take your chance... bit like buying anything these days !
