Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by kiki on Jan 14, 2008 21:09:34 GMT 1, banksy sent him a canvas for his endeavours!!
Are you really sure that is true?
It sounds like some "Banksy really likes me" bullshi t Cartrain may be spouting in a desperate attempt to appear credible, as opposed to a derivative, waste-of-space loser.
Keep riding those coattails, Cartrain. That's the way to earn our respect.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by giiiant on Jan 14, 2008 21:11:04 GMT 1, I wish him all the best. Lots of his work may be imitating Banksy at the mo', but thats not a bad place to start is it?
It is when it's plastered around the original.
Props to Cartrain though, at least he's getting somewhere.

Not at all Simococo! But I think what should be addressed is his blatant piggybacking. There's no doubt he's getting attention, which Im sure was his goal here, but somehow I dont think it's the right attention....
I know I'd rather be recognised for my own talents, rather than as the guy who tags next to banksy.

I quite like the "I'm with stupid" piece.

Totally agree, and if his art doesn't ever develop into his own style then it isn't great for the lad.
But he's having a go and I hope he comes up with some beauties. Mainly because I live in Shoreditch and it will make my walk home more interesting.
(and as long as he's painting the walls he aint nicking my car )

Cartrain's a great lad! and the thing that stand out for me is that he has the guts to do it ;D So many of the artists that try to make us believe they are Graffiti artists rarely do stuff on the streets, and when they do its on legal walls Some of the people that try to run him down just sound like the sort of people that would have run down Banksy's work early on but have then changed their mind when it became fashionable

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by BK83 on Jan 14, 2008 22:04:36 GMT 1, I dont agree, Silky.
I do plenty of work on the streets, but unlike cartrain (and many other fame hungry "artists") I choose not to sign my name and also find my own unique spots to do my artwork. For me, my street work is about the art and the message, not about me. Furthermore, my most inspired moments as a working street artist have been finding my own spots for my work and seeing other artists put their work around mine. In fact, recently I put up a stencil in Brooklyn and because I dont sign them, Borf came along and tagged his name underneath the stencil! made me laugh when I saw it.
My point here is this: "Artwork [Anything] that is only about wanting to be famous will never make you famous. Any fame is a by-product of making something that means something. You donβt go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit.β - Banksy
my two cents.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by wimpy on Jan 14, 2008 22:07:23 GMT 1, Does anyone find it funny that his name lends itself to his style? He must be the caboose car of the train, an ass-end hopping along for the ride.
Okay... that was a bit harsh...
Oh! Wait! Rumor time! Perhaps Cartrain is Banksy! (5 of you start other threads saying this in different ways and pretend to not have seen the other 4 so you can get attention).

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by andrewd on Jan 14, 2008 22:10:08 GMT 1, This book has been out for quite a few months at least. There is a thread on here somewhere discussing it and a few other publications he is in. Certainly Cartrain recieved a signed banksy tenner from Mr.B. I don't know about the canvas but that may have been a recent thing. Cartrain tells me that he doesn't purposely tag around famous grafitti. He's still a young lad and is perhaps eentitled to learn as he goes along.

I can't give you enough +'s for that. And I'm sure I've walked by some of your stuff then, eh.
I'll drop another Banksy quote (which happens to be right above Jay's) to add to the point...
"People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of the drainpipe to gain access."
I really don't admire him using Banksy as a drainpipe. Do you?

Err... ok.
We must be talking about two different people named Cartrain. The one I was referring to is crap.

If Cartrain wants to take on politics as a subject matter, I would suggest he try reading and learning first. Newspapers and books are a good start.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by kiki on Jan 15, 2008 1:28:35 GMT 1, Talk about Cartrainβs stencils is all rather dated and tedious, he moved on last Summer to his own photomontage-with-faux-gild-frame placements. He deserves respect for getting out there and getting up. His style is baffling; I see an effort to get political, something anti-capitalist, a bit of anti-authoritarianism and a huge un-tutored morass of surrealism. I canβt argue that at present there is much quality. Perfect for the streets then. Jonathon Jones is a very conventional art critic who tried to understand graffiti art by spending 24 hours reading Wall and Piece and BLT. He was generally un-impressed by Banksyβs trite insincerity and over-simplified slogans and after he criticised Cartrainsβ stencils he described Banksy as mediocre, finally concluding that you shouldnβt βkid yourself that this is βartββ. Sounds pretty close to kikiβs selective quote about Cartrain doesnβt it? Jones has no pedigree for βgettingβ street art and Cartrain has moved on, so I doubt the boy has gone off into a corner to turn emo. And there is no law against positioning adjacent to other street artists. A graffiti artist wants to get their work seen (and thereβs no denying the ambition in Cartrain), so which walls attract the most eyeballs? The ones with your Banksies and Swoons. That wall next to Atlantis linked to a couple of times above is plastered with a multitude of other graffiti artists so go and hang Sweet Toof, Cyclops, Swoon, Judith Supine and Elbow-Toe as well. You critics of Cartrain are as big a bunch of bandwagon jumpers as you claim he is but the bandwagon stalled months ago.
Do you actually like what Cartrain does or find it interesting? Do you consider Cartrain placing his tag next to someone else's work (see Oscar the Grouch mural) to be anything other than parasitic opportunism?
Bandwagon jumping is not taking place on my part. If no one else shared my opinion, I would still be expressing it. That opinion is quite simple: Cartrain is crap.
I disagree that lack of quality makes work "perfect for the streets". Perhaps my expectations are just higher than yours. I have certainly seen some fantastic art in my time, and I do not believe the standard should be lowered simply because it is out on the streets.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by kiki on Jan 15, 2008 3:32:19 GMT 1, some intriguing yes. I presume either you don't believe or are not aware of his explanation of that one? respect - you are entitled, even if by your omission it is quite simple. tongue in check, check SOH. I see far far worse out there. Check Paul LeChien. Cartrains work is not totally lacking in quality. Most criticism relates to that Blam tag and the fact he puts up where other artists put up.
I haven't heard Cartrain's explanation for adding his tag next to the unsigned work of others. What does he have to say about that?
Query whether he would dare do the same with an unsigned Banksy piece such as 'Ratapult', especially if it had not yet been added to Banksy's website.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by moonmorals on Jan 15, 2008 10:56:26 GMT 1, I just really like the fact that he causes such strong reactions, isnt that the point of art especially street art. Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by eddiedangerous on Jan 15, 2008 15:02:35 GMT 1, some Query whether he would dare do the same with an unsigned Banksy piece such as 'Ratapult', especially if it had not yet been added to Banksy's website. It was added to Banksys website about the same time the artist painting the knob was!!!

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Copyright on Jan 15, 2008 15:20:09 GMT 1, some Most criticism relates to that Blam tag and the fact he puts up where other artists put up.
A lot of artists are guilty of a little spot jockeying. Its cool sometimes, some spots are just better than others. but it is bad when done blatantly

As I mentioned previously, the problem here is that he is getting talked about for all the wrong reasons - There's no way that can be construed as good. Unless of course you are also Britney Spears' publicist.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Daniel Silk on Jan 15, 2008 16:31:36 GMT 1, Yep! We are talking about him and thats all that matters. If you looked at 100% of the things that get written about Banksy, Im sure a good chunk of them would be saying he's a vandal, and should be arrested Cartrain is making a name for himself and good on him! ;D

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by wimpy on Jan 15, 2008 16:56:14 GMT 1, So you started this thread knowing that he'd get bashed as a well-planned stunt based upon the "any publicity is good publicity" idea?
How much do you charge to set up a forum for someone like him and put it in the link-box above? How much "free" art did you get out of it? Or have you taken absolutely nothing except the good feeling you get from helping a "nice kid"? If anyone has a stake in his rep, it would be you, right?

Silky, Cartrain is by no means making a name for himself. his shoddy, poorly executed work and boring stencil ideas are going nowhere... and fast! He will be forgotten and gone by the wayside in no time.

I know many people would like to believe that but I get paid nothing, and I actually bought two pieces from Cartrain (might have been the first ever pieces he has sold) and I paid him over three times the amount he asked for ;D
