The street artist Shepard Fairey, whose โHopeโ campaign poster of Barack Obama became an enduring symbol of his last presidential campaign, pleaded guilty Friday to a charge stemming from his misconduct in trying to bolster claims in a lawsuit over which photograph had been used as a basis for the poster.
Mr. Fairey, 42, sued The Associated Press in 2009 after it contended he had infringed on the copyright of one of its photographs in creating the poster. Mr. Fairey had claimed in his suit that he had used a different photograph of Mr. Obama, but later admitted that he had been mistaken and had tried to conceal his mistake, by destroying documents and fabricating others.
โI was ashamed that I had done these things, and I knew I should have corrected my actions,โ he said on Friday in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The legal dispute between Mr. Fairey and The A.P. has been settled.
Mr. Fairey, of Los Angeles, pleaded to one count of criminal contempt and could face up to six months in prison. A prosecutor, Daniel W. Levy, told the magistrate judge, Frank Maas, that the government was likely to seek some term of imprisonment for Mr. Fairey, who will be sentenced on July 16.

Shepard Fairey / Obey Pleads Guilty , by boatyyy on Mar 1, 2012 0:38:38 GMT 1, being the conspiracy theorist that i am - the big deciding factor at hand may be political - it's election year and obama is not in favor and every angle possible to be used will be - that Shep image was key... to condemn everything popular and associated w/ him getting into office is, well... argubaly his people should have avoided this issue seeping over to this year... but may be they didn't have political strategist on the legal team, who knows... let's hope the judge is as objective as (s)he is paid to be and not aligned to any polical party...
Guessing, little Obama can do at this point - he can pardon him at the end of his term, but...
shame really - because the poster was created with all the right intentions and use - and was as impactful as one can get...

Its going to be one hell of an obey drop next January. Some edgy images in 2013?
