New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Ruggs on Nov 21, 2011 23:57:17 GMT 1, Okay folks lets calm down a little on this one. Everyone is entitled to their opinions on different artists and debate on those different opinions should be welcomed but lets not get personal or overheated.
Sorry for my colourful language, but if a thread pops up regarding a certain artists work that I don't have the time of day for, I politely say its not my cup of tea and move on or just ignore it. I'm not a big ESPO fan but I wouldn't go on about how crap his work is without knowing anything about him first. Some people should just know where to draw the line.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by stillborncrisps on Nov 21, 2011 23:58:35 GMT 1, And what happened to him leaving the vandal imagery alone? I swear he said he was going to have a change in direction after the book show at BRP a few years back.
He deffo said he had a new direction, but maybe it just wasn't as strong so went back to old faithful.
I think people are being a bit harsh on this one. When looking at it in context of other TMA's, it kinda makes sense/has a story.
To say it's 'just graphic design' is a bit weird. Banksy's stuff is far more graphic design based than this (ie communicating an idea by the simplest means possible).
No one's mentioned Logan Hicks yet, and his 'photoshopped photogrpahs turned into stencils, cut by a machine...'

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by johnnyh on Nov 22, 2011 0:06:41 GMT 1, Correct me if I am wrong, but didnt you link my painting to this thread? My comments have nothing to do with my sale. You are part of the problem, you are why walmart or tesco, what have you, put mom and pop shops out of business. It is because you are indifferent and happy to be told what is good instead of seeking out answers on your own. There is a lot to be said for education and connoisseurship, of which clearly, you have none. cant fight with ignorance. I tried. Carry on. I was trying to help you. Hopefully one day you realize that.
Lol never heard so much drivel in my life. Pray oh great honorable one. What on earth makes you think I am in desperate need of your help......
Please save me Arty oh great one I have this terrible art problem I buy things that I like. One of the artists I like is Nick Walker please save me. I know it's a mistake and you are so much cleverer than me.
But fact is and Harvey was not knocking Steve Powers but what ever way you want to cut it he is more graphic design based than Nick Walker is. Argus graphic design comment on his thread implies that he loves his fine art and not the graphic design rubbish. Which is fine except when you like graphic design based pieces which arty obviously does.
So to quote someone who knows a bit about art in my book. " zzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Forbidden Love on Nov 22, 2011 0:08:13 GMT 1, I really like this piece, think its great.
i was in paris the other day and my girlfriend really wanted to ride the carousel that the vandal is on.
artylang you seem to have something really against nick.
now you say...
My point being, art shouldn't just be a pretty picture (or in this case a s**tty one). - in your opinion but it can well be just a pretty picture? why isnt that ok?...but this work is figurative, had landscape, iconic building and to me is far from what your trying to say is just a pretty picture.
It should make you think, it should spark conversation or introspection. It should cause you to see the world in a new way. - first of all why should art make you see the world in a new way? not all art does this. sometimes you can look at a image and just like it and some may relate to it in a certain way. to me I think there is a meaning behind this piece
If your spending over $500 on art and it isn't doing any of these you are throwing away your money. - im sure someone spending over $500 on art wouldnt be hanging it if it didnt.
You can buy work similar to nick's for a tenner on the bowery. Youre paying way too much for a name that no one will know or care about in a few years time. - that is your opinion, how do you know no one will care about him in a few years time? he has had sell out shows and people still collect his work, big spenders and there are alot of people out there with his images on the walls.
Great, if you can afford to, but I can't. There is just too much quality to support out there that giving this work more than a millisecond of notice is too long. - you just dont like his work, fair but just because you dont like it doesnt mean everyone has to hate it which you seem like your trying to dictate.
these images are photoshopped photogrpahs turned into stencils, cut by a machine... - i believe they are handcut, and if not why does that matter. its just a method.
if you went to his last solo show in london i would no way call him a graphic designer, his canvasses were huge and had great detail. nick paints in a way that is unique to himself, cant quite describe it but his execution is his own and when i look at his work its far from amateur. even though the subject matter i didnt like his painting ability was excellent, and it made me still enjoy the works. and that's why i think his still successful.
you to knock nick so willingly in your last few posts is a bit poor taste.
glad to see some new work mr walker.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Deleted on Nov 22, 2011 0:15:24 GMT 1, Wonderful thread - my 10 cents -having followed nick for a number of years, I would say the vandal is now what Nick does (even though yes he said he'd put it to bed), is that bad? an artist can push a whole career on one idea or process, so if Nick chooses that progression so be it. Do I find it insipid, weak, totally lacking in value unfortunately yes.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by spenie on Nov 22, 2011 0:21:53 GMT 1, I think Nicks starting to look like a bad Logan Hicks, it's not just about how good a stencil is cut but more about the image and idea behind it. The idea behind this just seems pretty lazy and the colour choice is pretty bad too, this idea seems old now.

Good call as that what it reminded me of too.
I love my TMA Hollywood so he is not all bad but is just getting a little bit stale as far as I am concerned.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by johnnyh on Nov 22, 2011 0:27:26 GMT 1, To be fair though on this thread there are two NW pieces one has the vandal connection and one does not. I think yes he does have themes and nothing wrong with that but he also creates stuff outside of those. Some are good and some are not in my book.
But I think he is one of the few that develops and challenges himself and his overall body of work is both strong and good. Not everyone's opinion but it is mine. So I find it strange that he is knocked as being always the same and yet look at the Hong Kong piece. ......

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Deleted on Nov 22, 2011 0:53:01 GMT 1, This piece is getting so much attention because there's so little worth discussing at the moment in this scene.I look on the tv and see economies crumbling, inequality growing, the elite abusing their position, is there a street artist drawing attention to this? Only Blu and his prints don't make money so why discuss him.

Think as street urban has moved more to prints and galleries it has become much more conformist and less political. You do not often see as many political pieces.
Blu as you say is doing some spanking work there the tower and coins as well as the Argentina piece are two of the best pieces I have seen in ages.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Layaway Days Art Blog on Nov 22, 2011 9:47:59 GMT 1, I kind of like the vandal image. I am a huge Nick Walker fan (working on that though, lost 20 pounds in 35 days, sorry no idea what stones are) and to me it represents the vandal out in the day stalking out one of the buildings he is going to paint at night and figuring out how to do so. The look behind is just a cheeky way of expressing this. He is obviously not interested in riding the carousel but is doing so as some kind of camoflauge/blending in etc....
Not an art critic but I see what I see. I may and probably am wrong but that's what I see and it's good enough for me.
And not to leave the haters out. My last purchase from NW came with a Mona Simpson post card. I wanted something TMA. What a d**k.
All the NW hate reminds me of the Russell Brand stand up about not voting for Obama. 'I will never vote for Obama. EVER hahahhaha

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by mace on Nov 22, 2011 10:33:39 GMT 1, I'm very surprised that NW's work causes such a fierce debate. I think there are artists out there who have much less talent and are much worse with cashing in. Those black sheep deserve a discussion like that.
I like those two images, amazing stencil work, don't believe that these stencils were cut by a machine. I remember seeing videos where he cuts such complex stencils by hand.
Bottom line - come down !

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Nov 22, 2011 11:30:15 GMT 1, Was it Art-EL?? always came on her defending Nick's work?? he must have sold all Nick's prints off Always debate about Nick's work on this forum. I am a fan but it does seem he has run out of ideas (downward spiral since the black/red BRP print show 09), really dont like the French piece, the worse to date was Moscow but this is a lot weaker IMO of course.. But I don't mind the second HK piece. It's just everyone has different taste/opinions, I didnt like the political show he did in that russian gallery either, but some of you probably did. A lot of people dont like stencils full stop... its all good banter. Maybe he needs to get back to talking to fans like some artists do on here ie. 'what you think of this guys'?? Then it would give Artylang the chance to email him and "say I think your sh*t mate"!! I mean I am a big fan of Josh Keyes (who can really paint by the way) and he talks to his fans, asks them what print would they like to see next etc.. The artist gets both positive & negative feedback and helps them move forward

It's fitting too that the Vandal is holding an unbrella in this one. It rains a lot in the Northwest of England

No problems with people expressing an opinion, after all this is an art forum, but people trying to intellectualize street art??? You have got to be kidding.
Just for the record, what is the problem with buying a piece of art just because it looks nice?, I do and I feel sorry for chin strokers like Artylang who obviously have to stand in front of a piece for hours searching desperately for a hidden meaning instead of just enjoying it.

New Piece by Nick Walker For Scope Miami 2011, by aj2010 on Nov 22, 2011 14:56:09 GMT 1, Seems like artylang was on the sauce last night, which would explain why he was a total dik with the things he wrote. I personally like Nick Walker, although I wasn't keen on his last show. I couldn't care less about the haters especially when you see the rubbish people get excited about on this forum.
