Antony Micallef, by mp on Jul 25, 2007 3:01:30 GMT 1, I'm with you Carlito. The price jump has been unbelievable. I hope POW keeps the prices moderate on future releases. It's going to be the only way for fans to acquire work from their favorite artists for affordable prices. That's why I respect SOS so much. They could charge much more for their releases, but keep it in check.
I'm lucky enough to own a JD and SMS myself, but I see my dreams of getting an FF and 21C rapidly slipping away by the day. That is, until I win the lottery...

Antony Micallef, by mp on Jul 25, 2007 7:37:12 GMT 1, Got SMS off POW, but got JD on the secondary market. Still a very fair deal, as I purchased it back in January. Like I said, I feel very lucky to have both of them.

Antony Micallef, by jipsy on Jul 25, 2007 8:00:13 GMT 1, I called Remy at Laz when the 3 Mic prints became available. I was after some kind of deal, any kind of deal regarding the 4k+vat price. He wouldn't budge and informed that he (Laz) was selling the prints at a price instructed by the artist. So if anyones to blame for the crazy out of reach prices is it Anthony Micallef himself?

Only out of reach if they didn't sell and on the premise that they've sold out...

Not doubting what you have been told mate but doubting that its the truth! Its a well known fact that Laz HATES the secondary market, he likes to be in control and doesn't like to see all these possible profits being made by others, that is probably the reason for the high price, he wants what he knows they will sell for at a later date. Having said that I assume that the artist will benefit from the higher selling price and also I know that Laz does his best to ensure that its only one print per person which gives all true collectors the slim chance of obtaining a print for themselves. Again having said that you could have bought as many of the 4.7k prints as you liked! So that kind of proves my point about the secondary market!!!? Just my opinion of course!

Antony Micallef, by Strange Al on Jul 25, 2007 8:43:20 GMT 1, Its a well known fact that Laz HATES the secondary market!
That kind of surprises me. Firstly, because in many respects Laz is the secondary market. Moreover, the prices in the secondary market very much determine what price he can sell his artists' prints/works for, as well as increasing the value of his own vast collection. I don't think for one second that Laz has any problems with Mic's works selling for ยฃ10,000s at auction for example. My feeling is the prices of the Laz Mic's were very much determined by the prices 21st CL was reaching on Ebay at the time of release. In fact, I would go as far as saying without the Secondary Market I don't think Laz would sell many prints at this price. If people didn't believe they'd be able to sell their Laz Mics for at least as much as they paid for them (preferably much more), I don't think many would spend almost ยฃ5K on a giclee. The fact that the prints didn't sell out until the recent increased hype, proves this point. Therefore, no secondary market very few sales IMO. Laz is a shrewd businessman, who is well aware of this.

It is only an opinion and one that I have heard many times by people in the know! And you are spot on when you say that the secondary market is what helps make his artists the success that they are today. I think when I say the secondary market I am not talking about you or me buying a face value print, finding out a year later that you could sell it for 10x the price and cashing in. I think its the people that buy up what they can, who don't care for the art but buy just for the chance to make a quick buck! And how can you explain their reluctance to authenticate Banksy artwork outside of the registered print runs? Not talking about street art (which we all know is where it should stay) I am talking about the gifts that Banksy has done for other artists, DJ's, etc etc and these people have then sold on. I know of one particular piece, its 100% genuine, hand sprayed as a thankyou and given by Laz himself to someone for a job well done, this is now with someone else and whilst Laz agrees verbally that this is genuine he will not put anything in writing to say so!!
Another rumour for you, Christies are apparently fed up with the reluctance of someone to authenticate work and so are considering appointing an expert to research and authenticate art from Banksy in a similar way to the Warhol society!? Should be interesting!!
Nothing against Laz here by the way, he represents Banksy and as his commodity I guess he can do what he wants with it!

I spoke to eyestorm around the time of the micallef show and was quoted ยฃ7,500 for the original heads and apparently AM thought that he was charging too much at that price, so id say its got more to do with laz

Antony Micallef, by stuey09 on Jul 29, 2007 14:05:33 GMT 1, Interesting price on MWIH at the moment. Item number: 120146387157 ยฃ3,495, with 4 hours to go.
This one was up for sale last week with a buy now at ยฃ4,600. Bit more realistic now perhaps. Could be a good opportunity for someone. (No it's not mine, by the way).

Antony Micallef, by Harveyn on Jul 29, 2007 14:24:14 GMT 1, I think what is restricting the sale on this one is the seller insisting they want to deliver in person and collect cash. For instance I am in Ireland and I am sure the seller will not travel to meet me!! Also wanting to meet someone in a pre-arranged location with ยฃ3.5k of cash in your pocket!!! The seller has perfect feedback so I know that this is probably not the case with this auction.

Antony Micallef, by stuey09 on Jul 29, 2007 14:29:10 GMT 1, I get the impression that they're in a hurry to raise some ready cash. This is a short auction I believe and there is specific instructions on swift payment.

Antony Micallef, by scavos on Jul 29, 2007 14:36:33 GMT 1, Spotted Stuey. I'd be having that one if funds were available. This is the one that coach was saying he's got in his lounge and didn't realise the wording in the middle of the print until you kindly pointed it out - over our pre-Found pint. I think I bust a rib laughing at that! Great print. Looks like a nice frame job too from what I can see.

;D ;D ;D I was pulling his leg. It actually says 'Love' me you p*ick tease, rather than f**k me. Although, I think the joke is about to come back and bite me on the ass. On closer examination I think the We Come In Peace that I've just bought features a wee bit of oral sex. Mmmmmm, my 14 year old may have some influence on where this one gets hung.
