Banksy Prices Level Off, by dwight on Mar 8, 2007 20:17:47 GMT 1, I know that this has been discussed, but I thought I would start a thread to see what others think.
I personally think that the prices are falling off. Especially unsigned prints. The reason I see this price drop off is the release of more prints and the already inflated prices. If Banksy begins to release his prints like Micallef for 4k gbp a peice, the hype for banksy will die down some. It's also hard to see banksy prints selling for more than established artists' prints. Not that Banksy isn't up there with the legit artists. It's just that other prints like signed warhol prints which are 20 yrs old sell for similar prices as some banksy prints. Prices may stay the same, but I think that it is unreasonable to expect the same types of increases in value that have been experienced over the last 6 months (except rare signed originals/old signed prints)
Perhaps Banksy will grab the attention of the world with some new stunts, but right now he seems to be in publicity lull that is only made worse by POW continuing to delay the release of new prints.
Just my two cents...

Banksy Prices Level Off, by tranceport185 on Mar 8, 2007 20:25:14 GMT 1, Yeah but look at only a few months ago with the LA show, banksy is a powder keg. Rumours of his prints are enough to shift the markets. One thing to keep in mind right now, people are broke as hell from the xmas and LA season. People are jumping on these new Lucy prints and whatever gets put on pow etc. Its buying season if you got the cash if you don't "anymore" like me you sit patiently waiting for the rest of the LA's... I hear ya man but I have been saying that same thing for months and read some of the old threads in here.....people saying this when his prints were going for 200. In short he just sold an original for like 102,000!!!!! The guy is still red hot.
But I will admit that the market might be much smaller than we all think.

Banksy Prices Level Off, by goffy on Mar 8, 2007 20:44:40 GMT 1, The un-signed prints levelling off is no surprise, I'd rather have 1 signed print than 5 un-signed, as would most people I think. The signed ones will not level out until after the release of the L.A. prints, and then depending what Banksy does next. Does he stay street or go 'legit'

Im the opposite of you, i would sooner have 5 un signed banksy than 1 signed banksy, its the image i want rather than a signature.

Well that depends I have 3 unsigned Banksy's and someday when I get a bit better off hope to have a signed. But I would never give up these for 1 signed print I mean in the flesh no differnce between signed vs not. As an investment sure but have you ever tried to sell a favorite piece even if it nets you tons of cash its like shooting your dog. I agree with you that unsigned prints will level for now but tommarow you never know whats going to happen.

agreed. definetly about the image and i have a signed, not that you can see the signature from more than three feet away.

Totally agree, 5 unsigned for me, if I had to choose. I wish!

Banksy Prices Level Off, by goffy on Mar 8, 2007 21:18:35 GMT 1, When I bought my signed prints, I had the choice of buying one signed one or two unsigned ones. More thought went into my choice and I bought the prints I wanted, but signed. Which to me is more special. And yes, for investment purposes it is better. But the wife is going to have to wait until I'm dead before they get sold!

Banksy Prices Level Off, by dwight on Mar 8, 2007 21:41:59 GMT 1, Silky, I think that some specific prices will continue to rise at the release of the remaining LA prints, but I think that with a sudden surge of supply, the prices for the unsigned prints will be slightly lower than what we have seen. For example, around 600gbp is about the norm for an unsigned applause, but when there is a flood of unsigned prints available the prices for the new unsigned prints will (I believe) settle back into that comfortable 500 or so.
Just my opinion, but I do appreciate the great posts on the subject...

Banksy Prices Level Off, by pezlow on Mar 9, 2007 11:23:02 GMT 1, In addition to the placard rat going for over £3000 there have been a couple of signed applauses going for that level. I don't see any significant levelling of prices at all. I agree there might be after the LA Prints are released but at the mo that could be anytime between now and next christmas!

It would be nice to have a signed print, but I'm happy with unsigned, in fact for the right price I'd be happy with unsigned, unnumbered, unstamped as long as it was genuine, from the same print run, silkscreeen print, it would have to be cheaper than they're going for at the moment though.
I'm not sure I could justify having / paying for a print about £2500- £3000 when exactly the same could be bought for around £500 - £750 without the little pencil squiggle in the corner.

I agree completley, those backdoor prints that pop up on ebay from time to time that are from the original run and not numbered or stamped if they where selling for a more reasonable price i wouldnt hesitate in buying at the right price.

Banksy Prices Level Off, by tranceport185 on Mar 9, 2007 17:38:46 GMT 1, The truth is everyone has there own opinion and agenda, if I had the cash I would have all signed I can't so I have unsigned. The limits are the means I guess, the image is the same but how does it make you feel. I look at my unsigned J&J without regret. I look at the money in the frame job of my applause and question my sanity. While my LA Trolley has a couple creases can't seem to get that out of my head...... or maybe its these voices "click f5 click f5" So everyone is right if they really feel that way arguing about opinion is a tough battle.

Banksy Prices Level Off, by goffy on Mar 9, 2007 17:57:45 GMT 1, I would like to see Banksy do a Micallef and sign all of the (hopefully) POW/L.A. prints, sell 1 per household, and give a lot of people a chance to own a signed one. Let's face it, it will probably be the last chance for a lot of people to buy a signed Banksy at a reasonable price.
