Meaning or image, by slowmo on Feb 14, 2007 15:30:48 GMT 1, What works best for you? I love a deeper meaning to prints that I buy. But a lot of people love the Dolk prints, which are fun but have no obvious meaning other than the pun, where do you see yourself in this and why?
Very interested as I have just had three beers for lunch and had the epiphany that I wish I had bought Burger King because I now believe it has a deeper meaning that I didn't see before. Would love to have the artists explain their meaning, reckon it is just burger king hat on a monarch= funny but I am now thinking BK hat on monarch equals modern society and the lack of depth, a monarch, true leader of a country is now no better than britney spears as the celebrity outweighs the history.
Like I said, I had three beers at lunch

I'll prefer the ones that mean something to me on a political, social, metaphysical, etc. level but also carry some aesthetic value. I'll also buy ones that I just find funny or amusing in any other way. Then the third category is the "pretty ones" that I get that don't do anything more for me than make me stop as I walk by them and slur "PUuuuuurty". Then again, I am fascinated by flashing lights and spinny things.

Can be either for me. but tend to lean more towards something because I like the image. I prefer to get my 'message' from books, newspapers - something with a bit more substance. but then I think the best stuff can combine the two. actually, the best stuff doesnt have a message as such but encourages you to think for yourself. while looking pretty at the same time. but thats just me.

Meaning or image, by johnas on Feb 14, 2007 16:46:03 GMT 1, personally, if it's gonna hang on my wall, it must be aesthetically pleasing. If it was about meaning, I'd have something like Kennards Photo Op hanging up, which I dont, as I don't think it's pleasing to the eye. Doesn't mean I don't like the sentiment or the meaning behind it though
if we're talking about art in general, the thing I love is that all art is open to interpretation. To some Dolk' BK is funny, to others it's just pretty. To you, it has a whole deeper meaning. I think all art makes you think for yourself on one level or another, even if it's just to decide it's pretty and nothing else.
It's always interesting to hear what artists mean in their work but sometimes that removes the whole opportunity for interpretation, which to me, is the fun part.

i'm no sycophant but i almost always find myself agreeing with what you say! i must admit i like a good image and equally something with meaning, i could have something purely for image but prefer not too but could not have an ugly work purely for meaning. now that may make me shallow but whatever, that's me. however, the time i put my hand in my pocket is when the two are combined to great effect and even better still, to take saltandiron's point, is when it means one thing to me yet something else to someone else. not the most articulate thread i know, i haven't even had one beer yet - i'm waiting til later when my boys flatter to decieve, away at the home of football!!!

Meaning or image, by os1so on Feb 14, 2007 18:34:01 GMT 1, For me it has to has to look aesthetically pleasing and also take me to a place in my head when I look at it. I don't just mean that it has to have a meaning political or otherwise. But like Eelus shat-at it takes me back to when my dad took me to see the Empire Strikes Back in the early 80's for my Birthday then buying me an At-At (that I still have). Or Banksy's sunflowers takes me back to collage and my art history course, it make's me laugh to think that after all this time thats how the vase of flowers would look. Nearly all my pictures have some meaning to me. I suppose that I am a little shallow when it come to the art I buy and thats why I have an eclectic taste in art.

Meaning or image, by irf2112 on Feb 14, 2007 18:55:00 GMT 1, I look for some extraordinary... Which means asthetics, meaning, or if their down right cool... An amalgamation of all characteristics is what I'm really after. Thing is we all perceive these characteristics in different ways.
