WHO IS THE STAR?, by Yessir on Mar 11, 2007 1:26:08 GMT 1, Steve Laz gets too much credit from some people, to me he is just like a chairman of a big football club, who invests in young players (think artist Banksy/Micallef ), hoping that one day some of them will go on to become stars, do well for his club ( think LAZinc/Santa Ghetto/POW), and generate big profits for himself.
There is nothing wrong with Steve doing this, he could even be seen as smart/lucky to have such gifted artist in his stable, but he is not the star, he does not run the show, at most we can say he is an astute businessman/spokesman for a red hot artist that we all love.
I think there are alot of people connected with Lazinc, who believe they are the stars because they get the shine and attention that Banksy refuses to take for himself.
I also think that if Banksy went it alone Steve would become yesterdays news. Charles Saatchi has never really recovered the "kudos", he had, after Damien Hirst departed his stable.
No gallery owner can do anything to enhance the profile of art. Good art creates its own demand, the best thing to ever happen to "street art", imo is the Internet e.g forums like this one and I'll be controversial and say ebay as on the upside its taken a lot of the "power", away from some of these stuck-up galleries. The obvious downside is the flip-it-kids (also known as baggers), but I'll be the first to admit that these flip-it-kids have come to my rescue on more than one occasion, on art that i really wanted and missed out on from say POW.
I have no links to anyone from the art world, I'm just an art lover with a honest view.

WHO IS THE STAR?, by irf2112 on Mar 11, 2007 1:46:02 GMT 1, If Steve thought he was the star - you'd see pics of him on the Lazinc website. Time for all to take a chill pill.

Very well put. It also seems a shame that some of these forums have slowly been hijacked by second hand dealers and bagger who just come on here to tout the wares that a) you couldn't afford at the time or b) you were too busy at work to refresh refresh refresh.
This place ain't ebay, if you're not swapping or trading or selling at cost, then I suggest members pay the fees and use ebay.

WHO IS THE STAR?, by monochrome on Mar 11, 2007 12:06:50 GMT 1, there's nowt wrong with Laz i see him as Brian Epstein - he has one great act, signs others who simply ride the coat tails. considering banksy is well managed, he gets press, prices rise etc. yet, you have a relative unknown in Micallef, whom no f**ker had heard of for years until Laz tipped up with a show, and then 'bang' you lot are sweeping up prints like they were the salvation. Laz promotes artists, and the pokemon collecors buy everything they are told. Laz ain't a genius, it's just that there are more fools out there then he imagined

;DLOL, oh to be 12 again. glad to see you've got out of bed the right side yet again mono.
totally agree with you about laz too, he's just a businessman who is interested in making money. i don't even think he tries to hide that, although it is a bit hard to take when you are in to an artist for the art and he's into them for the $$$, no?
