Talking about Artists?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 31, 2007 15:17:27 GMT 1, I was just thinking about the wide range of artists that we talk about on here now ;D In the forums early days it was very much just Street Graffiti, but now with artists like Micallef and Denning, it just shows how things are changing ;D Are we looking at three sorts of Art? Graffiti, Graphic and ? What do you think?

Talking about Artists?, by alderevans2007 on Jul 31, 2007 15:52:20 GMT 1, I suppose what we are talking about is:
Pure Street Art (some of which have been tranfered into prints) - banksy - neate - dface etc.
Limited edtion prints that are influenced by Street Art to. Mix of stencilling, illustration, various other techniques. - Static - Baldwin etc (apologies they have fone street stuff)
More "arty farty" pieces on canvass and print that tend to use more oils, charcoal, pencil etc. Maybe more traditional art. The reason they appeal so much is that they have refence to contemporary issues. We can kind of link them to the street art culture given them a belonging away from traditional art circles. - Micallef - Denning etc
Just throwing it out there. Don't know much about art really, I just think it would be interesting to pin down what exactly is going on here. Nice thread Silk!

Talking about Artists?, by alderevans2007 on Jul 31, 2007 16:09:08 GMT 1, I really am no expert. These are just my observations. I just like the idea of knowing exactly what I am apart of and what I am buying. But I suppose that is a quite complicated question as things constantly get influenced by other things, bla bla bla....
I suppose things like this are usually best left to the Art Classes of the future. ;D

Talking about Artists?, by Daniel Silk on Jul 31, 2007 16:19:31 GMT 1, Yeah, I guess some artists are easy to put in a box, Graffiti or whatever, and other artists cover a lot of ground and its hard to pin them down

Talking about Artists?, by Vsix on Jul 31, 2007 16:29:16 GMT 1, I'd put Micallef, Denning in 'fine art', also Adam neate even though he is a 'street artist' Insect is just a 'Graphic Artist'
And Banksy just cannot be categorised!!
but I could be wrong

Talking about Artists?, by Simococo on Jul 31, 2007 20:33:03 GMT 1, Maybe one reason why the forum has expanded to embrace different styles is the demand. Everyone has gone nuts for contemporary street art, many desperate to make a few shillings. I wonder what % of the work people buy from this forum actually end up on the wall.
Other artists aren't daft, and even though it pains me to say it, loads seem to have "rebranded" to make a few quid (which I do understand because it pays the bills)
So there are probably 4 catagories
Graf, Street, Street Influenced, The Band Wagon

Talking about Artists?, by corblimeylimey on Jul 31, 2007 20:50:56 GMT 1, Personally I'm only interested in the street related stencil type of art, and that's what the core of this forum should be about. The 'fine art' talked about here really is going off at a tangent IMO.

Trying to boundary this forum is like herding sheep in space whilst being blindfolded and taking acid with a broken toe and an itchy bum. Not sure its worth the effort trying. Although I'm right behind you CBL, albeit gigling to myself and limping quite alot.
