Swapsies, by mose on Aug 9, 2007 15:26:53 GMT 1, I always thought this whole street scene and offshoots we're now seeing develop were totally against this art establishment? I thought the whole point with street art is that they're not waiting to be recognised you can see it for yourself... what you're saying makes sense I get it, I'm having a go at you I'm just saying everything seems to be getting boxed and pushed in that direction when in fact the 'fun' of this scene is that it's not waiting, this is art for the fans citiqued by the fans ... not by the establishment okayyy I could well be talking bollox sorry about that
lol, no need to apologize brother. in the lull between Banksy activity, discussions like this + pictures of the Neate show are what keep me coming back here again and again.
I look back to the early 1980's, Basquiat, the Fun Gallery show, and the resulting wake and see similarities to it now. Basquiat's SAMO work frequently was sprayed on the sides of gallery walls, aimed at gallery patrons. He used to paint things like(I don't remember exactly) "Buying art with daddy's $funds". Funny thing is, it was those same gallery patrons who were buying his canvases just 3 years later and, however conflicted he may have been, he was selling and selling, all through his high-powered, international representation. SAMO was truly dead.
I don't know, i guess seeing the hippies of the 1960's becoming the establishment to my generation, i find myself thinking that everything goes 'establishment' eventually and purity is a false dream.

edited
The forum Got me there! ;D Maybe I should rephrase it.
In my opinion, Neate and Micallef have the quality and depth to make a name for themselves in the "big wide" art world. Whereas other artists will get stuck in this "forum-ebay" thingy and then just fizzle out.
I think artists have to make it out of this "forum-ebay" thingy to be truly sucessful. But then again, what is success? Street art is meant to be seen on the street for all to enjoy. If an image on the street makes someone laugh or think etc. then that artist has done their job and is therefore successful. However, making prints bring money into the equasion and I don't think there will be enough demand on this board and ebay to command and sustain huge prices for certain artists.
Back to the question: If I had a signed banksy, I would seriously consider swapping it for a Neate that I really loved.

unfortunately all too true...but lets not rush it there...and lets enjoy the burgeoning scene as it grows..yes they'll be spectacular failures along the way and yes ppl will lose money - but f*ck think of feeling you first had when you laid your eyes on a Neate or a Micallef...and it all becomes worth it

Swapsies, by pezlow on Aug 9, 2007 15:38:35 GMT 1, I love Micallef, Neate, etc, but I don't think I would trade my only signed Banksy for any of their works. If I had multiple Banksys I'd probably consider it. Right now the only artist I would enthusiastically agree to trade my Banksy for another signed print 1 to 1 is Hutch!
WHAT !! are you mad. No way is anyone going to give you a hutch for a banksy. Dream on mate. Anyone lucky enough to own a hutch is going to keep hold of it for ever.

Swapsies, by Strange Al on Aug 9, 2007 15:52:17 GMT 1, Thanks Carlito. Slowmo: sorry mate but you haven't answered my question; I don't want a conceptual answer, that doesn't work in swapsies, I want to know what you will give me for my signed early Banksy...
Given that you're not after a conceptual answer, I'll give you a hypothetical swap:
Your signed Banksy BME print for a signed Bridget Riley, a signed Emin, a signed Hirst, a signed Gormley, a signed Opie, a Signed Gilbert & George and a signed Patrick Caulfield.
Now if you're offering a radar rat or CWSB, you could probably add a signed Warhol and a signed Lichtenstein to your swap list. Don't like Warhol or Lichtenstein? OK, how about Picasso or Francis Bacon?

as a matter interest how many of the above artists do ppl like? I can quite honestly say only Bacon appeals to me...he was rock n'roll ...
it's scary how many of the more 'established' have little or no intrinsic value to me - actually they are pretty much the reason why Banksy appealled to me all those years ago...

Most of them. Wouldn't buy a Bridget Riley but some of her gallery pieces are immense. Gilbert and George don't do a great deal for me. But Emin, Hirst, Gormley, Lichtenstein, warhol, Opie, Caulfield etc - some of the great great names of modern and contemporary art. All have produced work that has provoked interest and debate and has blown my socks off.

Now put the signed Banksy in the context of the artists that come up on this website. ie, in swapsy terms in context of Neate, Beejoir, Mantis, Hutch (no, that was just my little joke...Roller Girl aside and that for, ahem... aesthetic value...) et al...
Remember the original propostion was that my "hundreder" was worth 10 fruit salads.
Banksy is the hundreder (obviously..) what makes up the fruit salads...

Swapsies, by numusic on Aug 9, 2007 16:14:24 GMT 1, lol, no need to apologize brother. in the lull between Banksy activity, discussions like this + pictures of the Neate show are what keep me coming back here again and again. I don't know, i guess seeing the hippies of the 1960's becoming the establishment to my generation, i find myself thinking that everything goes 'establishment' eventually and purity is a false dream. unfortunately all too true...but lets not rush it there...and lets enjoy the burgeoning scene as it grows..yes they'll be spectacular failures along the way and yes ppl will lose money - but f*ck think of feeling you first had when you laid your eyes on a Neate or a Micallef...and it all becomes worth it
Indeed. Except think about the first time you saw a BANKSY on the street ! and then compare it with Micallef, Neate.. which just reminds me of going into a gallery. Banksy shook me and what I thought about art to the core.. still does.

Swapsies, by corblimeylimey on Aug 9, 2007 16:45:05 GMT 1, Good answers.
As I said in the first post it'll come down to monetary value, if your signed Banksy is one of the 'standard' ones it'll be worth around ยฃ4500 - ยฃ5500, which is about 2 of the latest Neate prints. Tell us what signed Banksy you have and ask how much in ยฃยฃยฃ your Banksy is worth. Then look at what's sold on ebay for how much to get an idea of fair swaps.
Lets say you've got a signed CND print worth about ยฃ5000 that'll get you a Neate (allow ยฃ2000, to ยฃ2500ish for that) a Beejoir Turin Scam (allow ยฃ600 - ยฃ700 for that) an unsigned Banksy (depending which one but could be around ยฃ1000) you'd have plenty left over for both Mantis prints and an Eelus.

Swapsies, by dave313perry on Aug 9, 2007 16:55:48 GMT 1, as a matter interest how many of the above artists do ppl like?
Did you say Emin!?? Booooo! ;D

Swapsies, by Aza on Aug 9, 2007 17:32:37 GMT 1, And for that matter, how much is a Neate deck worth....
These things are so hard to answer. For example I have a Neate deck that cost me ยฃ500. However if I was offered ยฃ5k for it I would not sell. Of course it is not worth that amount, but to me its worth more.
Regarding swaps, who knows? There is no way of setting up guidelines of any sort because people value things differently, just like I have shown above. And if it does come down to prices, still hard to say as they change by the day. The only way is by having two people agreeing to the same perceived values of the work.
