I would love to be able to purchase an original at the up-coming show in Los Angeles. Does anyone have any idea of what starting prices will be? Now, assuming they're within my budget, how difficult will it be to have an opportunity to actually purchase something? I know that there will be a mad rush for the prints, but will the same happen for originals in the $25-50,000 area?
This is very new territory for me, so any advice would be most appreciated!

Fortunately, I live in Los Angeles, so the only travel costs I'll likely incur are $6 for parking! If anyone is coming to town that week, let me know!

That's very good advice. It's standard practice in the art world for galleries to sell off original works prior to a show starting. Serious buyers will be given pre-previews or sent photos of work. It's therefore very likely that most things will be gone even before the pre-view. I'd therefore agree, if you're a serious buyer speak to Laz as soon as possible.

The thing is, most shows are now selling out before they open on preview nights, take the Neate show, all originals gone apart from one before the doors opened, even if you had 50k in your pocket it would have been no use (well not on art anyway, could have had a good night at spearmint rhinos instead though). Its all about that all important client list IMO. If your on it your in luck, If not you've dipped

The word from Holly is that serious buyers have been invited to the preview on the 18th and they expect to sell out within thr first hour.....

There will be 4 new prints, around $2000 each, 400 each, half available in LA, teh other half in the UK...

This practice shouldn't really surprise people, these are commercial exhibitions and the galleries are running a business after all. If you can sell all of the expensive pieces to clients you know and trust before the show you've both covered your overheads and minimised the risks of buyers backing out and/or defaulting on payments. Plus you've kept the big boys happy. How many big time art collectors would really be happy to stand in a queue for 6 hours to get a chance of a piece by a particular artist? Not too many I would think.
