Next new YBA??? Sarah Pickering, Napalm, by dgb133 on Aug 4, 2007 21:31:32 GMT 1, I know everyone here is pretty hot on street art and stencilers but I think Sarah has lots of lots of potential for hot British artist too. Her series 'explosions' is subtly edgy and conceptual yet sometimes beautiful. www.sarahpickering.co.uk/
If you're willing to spend thousands on Beejoir or Mantis or several thousand on a neete giclee I'd instead consider getting one of her original photographs. I think they can be had for about 1-1.5k GBP? Not positive. But they're from extremely small editions. Like I think about 10 maybe 20. Plus she's had very strong write ups in Art Forum and numerous magazines, a succesful NYC show and group museum show in Chicago (where I found out about her)
I have one of her smaller prints of the photo "Landmine" which is now completely sold out in all sizes but I also like her photo Napalm a lot!
I am completely unafiliated with her or her gallery. Just a fan. Enjoy. www.danielcooneyfineart.com/

"Landmine"!...I'd call it "Controlled explosion in the middle of Hampstead Heath" (no-person or animal were hurt during the explosion of this large firework in a field and St Johns Ambulance were present incase the photographer was injured by a flying piece of mud/grass seed/dog shit.

Next new YBA??? Sarah Pickering, Napalm, by dgb133 on Aug 4, 2007 21:58:17 GMT 1, My print was actually very cheap special edition print but I actually have spent 1-2k on a photograph before. Too each his own. But if you're willing to spend that much for an SBFO and maybe you also like this print too, personally I think it's a much wiser investment over the long term. But if you're not digging it that's cool
But myself, I can't imagine spending $20,000 for a two color Banksy screenprint either even if I do love it It's all about give and take. And then again Andreas Gursky's photographs sell for about a hundred grand from his gallery. Up to a million at auction houses. (I think? - However much it was that he set the auction record for it was nuts)

Next new YBA??? Sarah Pickering, Napalm, by snakes on Aug 4, 2007 21:59:50 GMT 1, This is dinosaur poop.
Used to make these sort of things in the yard when we were kids with french bangers and other compounds that i would no doubt be under investigation if i named.
If we knew that we could make money like that other than just blowing up old smurfs and starwars figures ancd making a noise i may now be living in a plush pad in Canary Wharf other than a prefab in Nunhead!

If I knew that stenciling rats all over city walls and sneaking my own crappy pop art paintings into museums would have made me a millionaire I would have been doing it long ago too. And hell I used to make worthless spin paintings by the dozens when I was a tike. But Hirst gets paid a couple grand a pop for one. But a huge part of this stuff is being the first to market with the idea and how you present it.

Next new YBA??? Sarah Pickering, Napalm, by dgb133 on Aug 5, 2007 0:53:08 GMT 1, ;D ;D ;D That's what I think of most of the Banksy knockoffs. To each his own, wouldn't expect everyone to like this. What I don't get is that work by Banksy knockoffs is selling for as much as work by this artist who has had work hanging in museums, ny galleries and the Tate.
;D ;D ;D Simply put there's just something really f**king cool about having a huge photo of explosions on your wall. But there's a nice subtle conceptual thought to it as well. What's real and unreal. The contrast of the nice manicured lawn to the sudden explosion. Controlled violence. People restraining themselves. Like how current society is so removed from real violence (like say in Iraq) yet completely numb to it as well. It's like turning war into a video game.
Or boiled down what's most evident in these is the contrast in how something so violent and deadly can look so cool and sometimes even beautiful.

Next new YBA??? Sarah Pickering, Napalm, by pezlow on Aug 5, 2007 6:51:53 GMT 1, I saw Sarah Pickering's degree show at the RCA. Quite interesting stuff but not really my cup of tea. Looking at her site she seems to have done well since graduating.
