Do I have terrible taste?, by spirit on Aug 16, 2007 22:10:41 GMT 1, I'm pretty new to the whole prints thing but have been having a good look round for the last couple of weeks for some good, reasonably priced art to buy.
I am seriously considering a couple of BRP prints - Saul and Logan Hicks' Sunset Apartments. I have seen some great photos of Hicks' print on the forum but can't find any of Saul. What's it like in the flesh. Anyone got one framed?
What's the general verdict on these prints? It seems a little strange to me that in the current climate of some prints selling out within minutes/hours (or not selling at all due to server implosion) that these prints have been available to buy for quite a while even tho' the editions are fairly small. Same goes for an Eine Elton dark that I bought from POW. Personally I think these are some of the best things I have seen (in the ยฃ150-ยฃ250 range) and I have been doing A LOT of looking...
I seem to like the things no-one else wants. Does this mean I have terrible taste?

Do I have terrible taste?, by doughy on Aug 16, 2007 22:16:06 GMT 1, Hi there,
I'm new too, but my sister & her other half have got a fairly extensive collection, 30+ pieces, and we tlak alot about art.
The main critieria we feel is to buy something you actually like, and want on your own walls. Value is secondary, everyone second guesses. Also pop into some of the galleries around. We popped into Elms Lester & Laz Inc. recently, great people.
To a degree, pay a fair price for whatever you get, this forum and others with the people will help.

Do I have terrible taste?, by a4mnt on Aug 16, 2007 22:22:51 GMT 1, Everyone here will say the same thing pretty much - buy what YOU like.
And what you can afford.
The more you learn by reading about artists on here and on their own websites, the more it will make sense, plus you'll form your own sense of style and opinion on art more and be able to decide on various factors that you've created.
So in essence, its all personal.
If you are buying to invest, thats a whole different thing. Be prepared to chase your tail a lot if thats what you want art for.
Otherwise, if a print makes you happy every time you look at it, then thats all you need.
And take some time to consider framing. I'm almost as excited about choosing frames as I am the prints now. Its all part of the process. I'm sat with all my framers catalogues spread in front of me now. I suppose he'll want them back soon!
Good luck.

Not at all. Who's to say what's tastefull and what isn't. If you like it that is all that matters.
Plus you get the bonus of actually having time to think about it rather than the F5 F5 F5 split second purchase. ;D

i'll second that.. 50 quid more, but really stunning quality. bigger and a smaller edition as well
but if you prefer saul's face then go for it! all BRP work is well worth what they ask for

I assume that you bet all the winnings on the next bet. So in theory, if you lose a bet, you lose it all?
So if thats correct, I really hope you do have enough (tenners) aside for a few attempts mate.
;D
edit: ooh, 500th post. And a 5 star member. At last, I've accomplished something in life.

Do I have terrible taste?, by spirit on Aug 17, 2007 0:19:23 GMT 1, Thanks for all your comments!
My reason for wanting to buy prints now is because i've been sitting in an office with blank white walls for too long and finally have a little bit of spare cash to do something about it. ;D
I want to buy prints that I really like to hang on my wall. I'm not in it for vast returns or trying to guess who's going to be the next Micallef/Neate and I'm wary of all the hype. Having said that, over time I will no doubt occasionaly want to swap/sell some of the prints I have in order to get something new/different. Therefore I hope to buy pieces that will ideally hold their value over the medium to long term even if they don't go up - and if they do, great - I'll buy more art. I can't afford expensive mistakes so I think the best thing to do is to buy quality as you should always be able to swap one quality print for another if you want a change. That's really where my (slightly tongue in cheek) comment about taste came in - if I did have terrible taste it will be much harder to do that...and the fact is these prints haven't sold very quickly at a time when there is a lot of money being spent on prints - why is that do you think?
I like these prints a lot and am pretty much sold already but I would still like to see any framed examples anyone has if possible.
About Ahmed - I'm seriously considering it, ยฃ100 more tho' no? - Fact is I love them both. Ahmed is bigger, more dynamic, and has 2 extra varnishes I think? but saul is a little more subtle/abstract - particularly the eyes....hmmm.....I also love the moses at TLSG but I am much happier paying for a 19 colour screenprint than a glicee for some reason - something about the CRAFT of it. ;D

Do I have terrible taste?, by iwouldfollow youanywhere on Aug 17, 2007 0:38:29 GMT 1, yeah you're right its 350 isnt it..I think these probably sell quite slowly purely because there is no profit in them for ebay 'dealers' so they tend to leave them..
which is good for collectors..also matt small isn't as well 'known' to many people. logan hicks is another example
long term your saul or ahmed should appreciate or hold its value and give you a lot of pleasure. in the short to medium term they wont do a lot as they will take a while to sell out and a couple have sold on ebay slightly less than cost I believe

No kidding, 19 colour print is a real beeatch to do, as stencil stretch, material shrinkage, ink problems, overs etc. add to a long list of seriously good printer need. I know, I work in the screenprint trade and you show these prints to our printers, they would sh** bricks! LOL

Do I have terrible taste?, by pezlow on Aug 17, 2007 9:19:21 GMT 1, Spirit if you have bad taste then so do I because I love the Logan Hicks and Eine prints. Just because something doesn't sell out immediately is a complete irrelevance. In the fine art world some very esteemed artists prints can hang around for YEARS before they sell out. This doesn't mean that they are crap it's just that it is only in this crazy little world that people are buying stuff to leave in tubes, sell on, or stick in portfolios.
You go ahead and buy your prints mate, frame them, stick them in the office and forget about value. They will give you years and years of pleasure.

Do I have terrible taste?, by paulah on Aug 17, 2007 10:32:26 GMT 1, And don't forget a lot of early Banksy prints - and the Micallef Angel Bombers hung round on POW for AGES - and now people can't get enough of them.
Maybe have a look at the ยฃ50 thread too - then you can buy ones you personally really like to have on your wall - and you won't have spent much - so there's no pressure to ever get the money back.
Personally I have coming round to trusting my judgement rather than buying crowdpleasers - but I have a price limit too - and anything above that I want to be pretty sure it will at least hold its value while it's on the wall.

Do I have terrible taste?, by brut on Aug 17, 2007 19:25:16 GMT 1, Hey Spirit. I have posted this in a few threads before & i thought you would like to see my Logan Hicks print. I agree with carlito as this is also my favorite print released this year. The depth of the print is stunning but you only truly appreciate it when it is sitting in front of you. BRP are also very good to deal with. Enjoy.

Paulah - the ยฃ50 thread is a cracker - I had a look it a few days back and ended up getting 10 prints for a total spend of ยฃ120 - love it!
corblimeylimey - thanks for the links - interesting stuff!
and brut - thanks for posting your Hicks pic - it looks stunning!
I would still love to see some framed matt smalls if anyone has any.
cheers!

It may be worthwhile reaching out to Logan and seeing what he has available. He is a top guy and I know a few other forum members who love their purchases. Plus the the Pound is kicking the dollars ss! And by the time you consider framing costs it may be only slightly more to get an original

www.workhorsevisuals.com
also very worth checking out since unless you knew it you would think that all he does is buildings... his patterns of nature section is well worth a visit!!
loving that dollar exchange rate!!!!
