barcode v napalm, by slowmo on Jun 21, 2007 14:32:00 GMT 1, Barcode anyday for me, Napalm is a straight up photoshop image, Barcode is the real deal .
But definitely, I would say that no reserve makes people seem to bid more quickly

barcode v napalm, by Strange Al on Jun 21, 2007 15:13:56 GMT 1, I'm interested to hear what people think the Barcode image is about and why they're drawn to it?

barcode v napalm, by slowmo on Jun 21, 2007 15:24:40 GMT 1, I like stencil graffitti, its one of the best stencils he has released as a print is my honest opinion, not overly bothered by the meaning.
But to stick my thinkers hat on again, reckon it has something to with capitalism is an animal that will one day break free from its constraints (barcode cage) and cause mayhem, my god what have we done etc etc.
PS - Really liked his shark fin barcode too

barcode v napalm, by cru5tee on Jun 21, 2007 16:24:59 GMT 1, barcode is great, but as an iconic piece surely napalm has the edge in terms of a 'banksy' piece. When I saw it as a painting in Hirsts Serpentine show it really packed a punch.

barcode v napalm, by saltandiron on Jun 21, 2007 16:46:47 GMT 1, Barcode for me everytime. Message wise I'm split between seeing it 1) as the vicious animal that's been kept caged behind the barcode being released and is coming to get us. capitalism bad dangerous etc etc.... 2) and sometimes I think its 'us' escaping an overly consumerist lifestyle and going on the prowl.
As slomo said Napalm is a bit photoshop. I also generally prefer Banksy's simpler stuff.

barcode v napalm, by finsburyparkranger on Jun 21, 2007 17:18:50 GMT 1, When you have seen the image so much you kind of forget how you felt when you first saw it. I remember seeing both for the first time. When I saw barcode i remember thinking it was a well drawn image and a nice idea. When i saw napalm it was like BANG... my god, what a incredibly powerful statement ... I was amazed no one had banned it. It was like an artistic bomb. Its was sparking with controversy but also was amazingly succinct in telling a truth that was hard to explain in any other way. My mate has got one on his wall and I love seeing it when i go round there, if art ever came in a 'hard core' genre Nepalm would be the gold standard. For those reasons Nepalm any day of the week.

barcode v napalm, by Strange Al on Jun 21, 2007 17:28:48 GMT 1, why does the image HAVE to have a meaning?
It depends how you interpret the word "meaning". Though for me art is all about the expression of the artist. Therefore by definition art has meaning. Agreed - it may not have meaning in the sense that it's a work which depicts a particular narrative theme or concept. Though, it has meaning in so far as it conveys an artist's moods, thoughts and feelings.
For me Barcode is one of the Banksy images which is much harder to read than his others. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It's very possible that you are right - perhaps there is no narrative. I definitely think we often read much more into his work than he ever intended. Though fact is that most of his works do have some sort of socio-political message.
I can't now remember if Barcode appears in any of Banksy's books or if he's previously commented on it. Maybe someone else can remember if he has. That said, I do tend to prefer not hearing it from the artist's mouth - reality hardly ever lives up to fantasy.

man, that is probably the biggest appeal to me. Not that each image has a specific meaning but the fact that Banksy's work makes you think. The emotional quality his work represents is second to none... at least to me anyway. Looking at his imagery is kinda like watching the movie The Six Sense. Each time you view it, you see something slightly different.

barcode v napalm, by a4mnt on Jun 22, 2007 10:30:51 GMT 1,
Sorry Stuey, didn't mean to mentally transport you back to school there!
I've thought about buying Napalm a few times, particularly when they were floating round a few months ago at the £750 mark. But after travelling through Vietnam and reading the book 'The Girl In The Picture' I just couldn't quite stomach seeing it every day.
I understand what the picture is saying, but I just can't handle the fact that people could be looking at it in total naivety of what Kim Phuc went through. Or maybe I just couldn't stand seeing Ronald McDonald every day! Mickey's OK, I don't mind him so much.
Thats why for me, Barcode is my favourite Banksy, as whatever its socio-political message might be, its not immediately obvious. Plus I'm an animal lover and I like the big space on the right hand side !!

barcode v napalm, by jam on Jun 22, 2007 10:43:53 GMT 1, I would choose barcode as a print over napalm any day. It is in the top 2 of my wish list as far as Banksy prints I want to own.
That being said however... I think that the scale of the original Napalm canvas that Hirst owns, makes that piece much more significant. I would imagine it has even more of an impact in person.

barcode v napalm, by slowmo on Jun 22, 2007 11:00:57 GMT 1, Quite the opposite for me. I thought he was having a laugh with napalm when I first saw it, then learnt to appreciate it over time. Still not one I would really want on my wall though, for the very reasons you suggest. Its well in your face
