Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by Wearology on Jul 24, 2010 11:14:44 GMT 1, I feel I did not convey my message properly in my last post - so I will try this again. It is my personal opinion that all people including myself should be careful when contemplating buying a Warhol - because there seems to be many fakes out there. It doesn't matter if you plan to buy a Warhol from a gallery , the secondary market , EBAY , expresso beans , banksy.info or the foundation just be aware of current market conditions and be very careful. His work , his signature and supporting paperwork for that time period is very easy to duplicate. I was just trying to help a fellow forum member in my last and this post before they buy a fagazy - that was my only intention. It does not serve anyone's purpose if the market gets flooded with fake art -

As I said again, if anyone of view guys is interested in Warhol (don't buy from a guy whose username is multiple business on the bay. Don't have straight proof but as I explained in PM's to Mike) with some contacts I have that deals in Warhol's work.. we are quite sure that most of his stuff is fake... Because I know he has one listed for £3K on ebay).

Thanks. That seems to be the consensus here. I did see that listing and emailed him. When looking at his other items on ebay and past sales it seemed a little off. Other members here have expressed similar thoughts. I replied back and said I would pass. I am still very interested in the print and would love to pick one up some day.

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by dodge on Jan 11, 2011 10:22:05 GMT 1, I know it's a long shot but does anyone have an exhibition poster for ‘There is Desire Left [Knock, Knock]' at Kunstmuseum Bern, January 25- March 27, 2008. It's the 'eggs' one!
I found one on ebay but it is over £100 with postage! The museum show them as being in stock online but unfortunately they are all gone.
Cheers. X

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by mmmike on Mar 23, 2011 21:54:32 GMT 1, I'm pretty much broke so i'm not looking to buy at the moment but likely will be looking to pick up one of a few Warhol and Haring prints that are high on my list maybe in 6 months. So I want to do some research. If I get a great deal I could buy earlier.
I don't feel comfortable buying these from ebay since I suspect there are a lot of fakes out there. Anyone have any suggestions on good places to buy? Is there a forum or some where to buy direct from collectors?
I'm most interested in...
Warhol Birmingham Race Riot Electric Chair Vegetarian Vegetable soup
Haring Best Buddies Untitled apartheid Icons (baby, dog)
But I'm open to others.
Authenticity is a big thing for me. But so is price. i saw some nice ones in NY galleries but the prices were crazy. Any suggestions?

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by Brushstrokes 75 on Mar 23, 2011 22:01:32 GMT 1, Don't buy from Hepner or any high end gallery if you don't want to pay 3 times their value. Your best bet if you don't want to deal privately is to buy at auction.. Wahol prints come often at auction and you might find what you're looking for!

Yep i have been to Hepner. Great stuff but the prices are crazy.
I have too issues with auctions. One I have not had good luck getting them to send me good pictures so I'm never sure about condition. So I guess I will have to travel to bid in person? Two I'm not sure how much they stand behind the sales in terms of authenticity. Anyone hav any thoughts? If I buy something and then later find out it is fake, am I out of luck?

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by Brushstrokes 75 on Mar 23, 2011 22:32:47 GMT 1, Auction houses never insure authenticity. (Authenticity is implied but not guaranteed).
Anyway, they allow you to get a refund if the item is fake but they will need one or two reports from international recognized experts saying the artwork is fake.
From Sotheby's terms :
SOTheBY’S AUTheNTICITYGUArANTee
If Sotheby’s sells an item which subsequently is shown to be a "counterfeit", subject to the terms below Sotheby’s will set aside the sale and refund to the buyer the total amount paid by the buyer to Sotheby’s for the item, in the currency of the original sale. For these purposes, "counterfeit" means a lot that in sotheby’s reasonable opinion is an imitation created to deceive as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue (taking into account any Glossary of Terms). no lot shall be considered a counterfeit by reason only of any damage and/or restoration and/or modification work of any kind (including repainting or over-painting). Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:- (i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinion(s) of scholar(s) and expert(s) at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or (ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical to use; or likely to have caused damage to the lot or likely (in sotheby’s reasonable opinion) to have caused loss of value to the lot; or (iii)there has been no material loss in value of the lot from its value had it been in accordance with its description. This Guarantee is provided for a period of five (5) years after the date of the relevant auction, is solely for the benefit of the buyer and may not be transferred to any third party. To be able to claim under this Guarantee, the buyer must:- (i) notify sotheby’s in writing within three (3) months of receiving any information that causes the buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the item, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at which it was purchased and the reasons why it is thought to be counterfeit; and (ii) return the item to sotheby’s in the same condition as at the date of sale to the buyer and be able to transfer good title in the item, free from any third party claims arising after the date of the sale. sotheby's has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. sotheby's may require the buyer to obtain at the buyer's cost the reports of two independent and recognised experts in the field, mutually acceptable to sotheby's and the buyer. sotheby's shall not be bound by any reports produced by the buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional expert advice at its own expense. in the event sotheby's decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent expert reports.
Sotheby's gives 5 years warranty so should give most of the galleries & big auction houses. Some auction houses are more shady about that (but you need to read the Terms...).

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by mmmike on Mar 23, 2011 22:44:28 GMT 1, Thanks. Yes I think buying from the big two auction houses is pretty safe. It is the others that i'm not sure about.
i do keep up with the auctions so i think I will have to do my due diligence on the auction before bidding on anything but likely the way to buy.

Andy Warhol 🇺🇸 Real or Fake? • Sunday B. Morning Print, by nickc on Mar 23, 2011 23:59:31 GMT 1, There's a gallery in Weybridge, Surrey called Globe Gallery. The guy who runs it was friends with Haring. Has great stock of both him and Warhol, full authenticity checks and half the price than you would pay in a top gallery. They also do a great coffee. Web address is www.globegallery.co.uk

Interesting site - good on them for putting up (most of) their prices. Some great Basquiat's in the other artists section. What are the Haring £350 untitled pieces - unsigned un-numbered silks?
