Morons on US ebay, by Octopus UK on May 2, 2007 17:00:08 GMT 1, I noticed in the local Royal Mail sorting office that RM add an extra £8 to cover their "costs" in collecting an import duty or TAX. Bit of a rip off that.

Morons on US ebay, by themightyreds on May 2, 2007 17:06:27 GMT 1, I think its a 17.5% (vat) rate for imported goods. Plus you get a nice fee from Royal Mail for the honour of being charged inport duty...
I had this on an Insect print i ordered from DJ Shadow.com When i ordered a second i asked for it to be marked as a gift and it was delivered with no charge.
Wonder if the buyer of this one will get it through without HM customs taking a slice...

Morons on US ebay, by johnerotten on May 2, 2007 17:23:07 GMT 1, by this rationale, would it be possible to insure a "gift"?
surely there are gifts of value and importance.
just wondering.

Morons on US ebay, by corblimeylimey on May 2, 2007 17:50:02 GMT 1, On imported goods from the US you have to pay Duty and VAT plus the Royal Mail charge for collecting the money.
A gift will raise the level that Duty kicks in from £7 to £36 and VAT from £18 to £36. There is no duty for original art but there is for prints I can't remember what it is I think it's 5%, So worst case scenario is you pay £8 to the post office for handling, 17% Vat plus 5% duty, so a £100 import could cost you £130.

Would carlito be entitled a refund on his paid taxes then? Each Ghetto Ghost is different and therefore original in a way so would the no duty for original art apply to him? Just wondering!

I'm not a tax man, but I'd say no, they would need to go by the description on the customs form and it is a print (isn't it?) even if some handwork has been done on top, their view of original art is that which is made totally by hand. I read their description of what they mean by original art but I can't find it now.

Morons on US ebay, by tadghostal on May 2, 2007 19:17:14 GMT 1, Here's a question: VAT is supposed to protect local businesses in the UK against unfair foreign competition. But a Banksy print is produced in the UK and is only available via POW as the origination point. So, is it really "importing" the print, or simply shipping it back to whence it came from? Seems to be, a bit of double dipping as taxes have presumably been paid by POW on the sale of every print already.

That's HM customs for you. Still they have to make a living, all those forms and paper to shuffle doesn't come cheap you know

Morons on US ebay, by smartussi on May 3, 2007 4:53:04 GMT 1, I'm from the USA, ...when I ship items to UK, I usally mark it as a gift of low value and I double tube the print and put the tubes into a box, thus giving the print 3 layers of protection from damage. ...it cost me a bit more on my end shipping the larger package, but it is almost garenteed to arrive safe, and tax free

Exactly the same method here. Mind you, only shipped to the UK four times at this point, but all 4 have gone through without the slightest hang up. Got the idea after receiving A-Trak from OG. Those boxes are perfect.

Morons on US ebay, by mickg on May 3, 2007 9:18:20 GMT 1, I'm not a tax expert but I read somewhere recently that the VAT rate on art is only 5%. You get charged the full 17.5% but can reclaim the difference. Can anyone confirm that?
