shepard fairey pricing???, by nacional on Jan 24, 2011 17:52:52 GMT 1, A confusion..
Can't understand the pricing of Shep...some editions of 300 are priced at under 100 dollars, whilst a print on wood (series of 5) comes in at 10,000 dollars...some other prints are priced in thousands and have same print runs as those priced at under a ton...I know that ouput is massive and quality varies, but this does not seem to affect others artists in this way...also in wider picture he seems to be huge...so why are signed limited runs going for under 100 bucks??
Just a few thoughts....

shepard fairey pricing???, by afroken on Jan 24, 2011 18:13:24 GMT 1, The silk screens on wood are editions of 2 + 1A/P. Having said that I've never seen one sell for $10k. The very best ones go for $5k, maybe $6k at a push. A very good HPM on wood might make $10k.

shepard fairey pricing???, by artylang on Jan 24, 2011 18:15:51 GMT 1, image desirability. When you have such a small amount of editing going on and release every single thing there is bound to be a great discrepancy between what is considered "good" and what is considered "poor".
One of the early and best lessons I learned when I began collecting was buying something just to have a piece by a particular artist is, sorry to be crass, stupid. Smart collectors, or collectors that go out and research what they buy wont even consider sub-par imagery. That is why there is such a large margin in the secondary market pricing from print to print. Suckers and college kids buy the cheap stuff and collectors push up the prices of the stuff that people actually want and may be culturally significant down the line.

shepard fairey pricing???, by Happy Shopper on Jan 24, 2011 18:44:33 GMT 1, The prints that tend to be pricey are the ones made from the larger, nicer originals (or have had large, nice originals made). And the most popular images. Obama, Peace Goddess, Sunsets are to Die For, etc.
The cheapest tend to be the prints made for concerts, charities, etc. More or less commercial design posters with less interesting images. Z-trip, Paul Watson, Immigration Reform, etc.

shepard fairey pricing???, by jusdeep on Jan 24, 2011 19:02:18 GMT 1, I would have to agree with the desirability of the print. His newer prints, are nowhere near as desirable or seen as collectible as his earlier works. Also the chance of finding a mint condition print from his early days hikes the price up. He does seem to churn out a lot of dross 'in my opinion', whether these prints will one day demand a similar price or affect his output or pricing as a whole is another debate.

Agreed, though I can see certain recent images like the Dalai Lama or Burmese Monk for instance increasing in value over time. once Collectors get their hands on desirable images they seem to be hoard them. Thus driving the price up on the ones that eek out into the market.
I also think that the collectors of prints and the collectors of Small editons/art pieces tend to be different people of different social-economical backgrounds.

I hope english is not your first language. Re-read my statement. You are completely taking what I said out of context. But you are right to a certain extent. People with more money are usually able to buy things that are more expensive. Things that are deemed more desirable are usually more expensive. Not trying to disparage anyone. Just being a realist.

shepard fairey pricing???, by solar77 on Jan 24, 2011 20:31:11 GMT 1, In short, when are looking at an artist who has several hundred thousand prints in circulation, image quality becomes far more important. If someone wants a signed Banksy, they have to pay significant cash for ANY image because of the limited number on the market. If someone wants a signed Shep the overwhelming supply allows the buyer to be more selective.

but you meant that there are two kinds of print markets - low budget and high budget. and that some artists produce especially for both of them? sorry if i misunderstood again!
