ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by vfg on Oct 14, 2021 23:02:47 GMT 1, I asked why is that info important, replying with the same exact comment won't help me understand.
I don't see how I am wasting your time, as I did not specifically ask you anything. You are free to do something else. All in all, I just don't understand the animosity, since I don't think I offended anyone, but you are free to do as you please.
Well, I suppose if anyone else has any insight, I'd be really grateful (as I appreciate Fred West Country Prince replying to me). I'll update with the auction link if I don't resolve the issue with the auction house soon.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Jimini Cricket on Oct 15, 2021 14:45:32 GMT 1, Details are scant, therefore advice will be scant. General observation, in practice a bricks and mortar auction house that conducts a physical auction, should already have possession. Anything else, depends on the organisation and how covid has impacted logistics in the region.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Happy Shopper on Oct 15, 2021 14:50:23 GMT 1, There was a story on here not long ago about a similar situation, where the auction house didn't have the piece, and then the seller backed out.
So, yes, the auction house should have the piece in hand, and have inspected it.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by eleddy on Oct 15, 2021 17:14:47 GMT 1, I also consider myself a "newb". I've been collecting (for myself) for about 3 years and my general experience is ... There is no general experience. The pandemic uprooted everything. I waited 2 months for a piece I thought was in Florida once, that somehow was actually in NJ. I've done 6 different auctions now and my general feeling is that you should find it anywhere else if you can. Unless you're going Christie's or Sotheby's and tossing 6 figures to the wind, I've found even the same auction houses can have variable shipping, descriptions, etc.
Direct from the artist/printer/gallery/stockx/eBay/auction in that order is my preference. Honestly, I've even had better experiences with my eBay buys.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by vfg on Oct 15, 2021 20:18:46 GMT 1, Thank you everyone for your opinions. I suppose it really can vary from place to place. This one is a brick and mortar auction house (a popular one), not artnet or similia. I spoke to the auction house and there had been an actual issue with the lot. I will update to explain what happened, but I want to wait till it's resolved.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by vfg on Oct 19, 2021 17:36:25 GMT 1, To conclude: after inquiring about the delay, the auction house told me that the artwork had been damaged in handling, so they had obtained a new one, which explains the delay. They also offered to refund me the amount (it was ~$150) and send it for free. I asked, if possible, to just cancel the bids (remember I had won two lots). They graciously gave me a full refund.

Iβd be looking to put In three or four Hirsts, Invader, Henry Chalfant, Brainwash ( exit through the gift shop Elvis donβt be cruel HF ) prints amongst some other smaller but respected hitters. Would Hong Kong be my best bet ?

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by sandworm on Jan 29, 2022 19:34:43 GMT 1, I haven't previously sold at auction but have a few pieces that I'd be looking to sell in an upcoming auction that I would assume are valued at somewhere between Β£2-8k each.
I would prefer to deal with one of the top tier houses if possible: Christies, Sothebys & Philips
Is there any reason to go with one over the other for prints & multiples?
I am concerned that maybe these auction houses only accept 'lower' value pieces (sub Β£10k) for good customers that consign higher value lots / have built a reputation with them?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by fusion0001 on Jun 8, 2022 15:12:51 GMT 1, Would really depend on the artwork, but something to keep in mind is that if this is the first proposed estimate by Sotheby's, then those are typically significantly below actual value of the work, since the auction house wants to make sure they have as close as 100% sell-through and hence their recommended low estimate is usually far below market value.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by startimeash on Jun 8, 2022 15:50:59 GMT 1, Do you have a particular thing that you want to do with the money? If so, and if Β£8k will cover it, then take that. If it's just going to sit in the bank, and you're treating it as a nest egg, I'd be inclined to go to auction. If Β£8k would give me a holiday of a lifetime, for example, then I'd prefer to know that was paid for, rather than stress about the "what if's" of going to auction. That said, both other posters make good points. For me, though, if you have it earmarked for a particular project or use, take the cash.

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Daniel Silk on Jun 8, 2022 16:49:22 GMT 1, I guess you also need to think about if it went to auction that could be month away, and that could mean the value going up or down? Also like others have said, if you plan to buy another piece of art with that money, do you really need it now! Will that new piece be sold out or gone up in value in a few months time?

ADVICE π° Buying & Selling Art at Auction, by Riotcops on Jun 8, 2022 16:49:30 GMT 1, If I needed the money right away I'd sell. If not, it would head to auction. You're essentially betting Β£800 for an unknown upside but based on the high estimate it would be 4.5x or potentially much higher. If one person is willing to pay Β£8k right now I'd presume there will be many more.
