I just received an email from the artist who created the cartoon which bares an obvious similarity to JBoy's "Selfie" piece. He voiced frustration over the incident and included an image done by another Cuban artist 30 years ago. This work bares a striking similarity to yet another one of JBoy's images, titled "Home Sweet Home."

I normally stay out of these 'who used the image first' discussions but ... I'm sorry, the Cuban artist image and the jboy image do not pass as 'a striking similarity' ... other than they both used barbed wire for nests, but even those are constructed diffently ...

Interesting perspective.

I find the image made in 1979 by Fernandez to be very good. Coming from a Cuban artist, the image has tremendous weight, and humor. The barbed wire nest symbolizing Cuba, the mother bird and her eggs symbolizing it's people. I could go into more detail, but I am sure you see where I am going: What protects us also has the potential to isolate and destroy us. A similar message is present in Banksy's "Love Hurts" balloon piece. JBoy's "Home Sweet Home" also plays on that same message. The big difference being that Fernandez conceived his own idea at a time (and in a place) where the world was not as "open." This fact gives the original Fernandez piece much more importance to me. 

As for "Selfie," it's just plain and simple theft of another's idea for your own gain.

If this is made into a print, why not have multiple editions of APs and PPs, each featuring different coloured notes, maybe even have some hand finished by the artist? I'd imagine they'll be lapped up. Perhaps even do some on aluminium too. Everyone likes slightly hackneyed images on aluminium, right?
