What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Coach on Sept 22, 2013 11:12:49 GMT 1, Just listened to the transmission clip Sean. So, what's that all about then? They play joy div songs with classical instruments? Just transmission, or lots of jd songs? Interested. It's an orchestral set up, augmented with bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, samplers etc interpreting the work of joy division. So yes, plenty of jd songs. But it's not straight forward cover versions, just played by an orchestra. Sometimes it's just a riff that's decipherable. The sounds used are fantastic, and very reminiscent of what Martin Hannett created.ย But what made it for me was the lighting and projection. Having lit plenty of classical stuff, most orchestras want pretty standard stuff -overhead white lights so they can see and read music. This was lighting you'd see at a gig - intelligent lights, in sync with the music ( not just left to move aimlessly like in most venues ), plus projection and images based on the music of jd. There was a bit about half hour into it where the very simple animations were based around the dancing of Ian Curtis. It took a few seconds to realise, but when you got it it was hypnotic. If you put in 'heritage orchestra' into youtube you'll see a few excerpts. The show's about an hour, with an 'encore' of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' based around the string section and Ian Curtis's vocals. As a live performance and something different I'd recommend seeing this. ย
Thank you Sean. That sounds wonderful. I'll have a gander at YouTube when I'm at a computer. Excited to see it. The animation based on IC's dancing must have been something to behold. What an individual. They broke the mold with him. The clip you posted sounded very good. I was wondering whether you had worked on the lighting, but I see not. It's good to be impressed by ones peers work though.

Outstanding!!
Took that and fucked with it. Brilliant.
Enjoyed seeing the chap say he watched a documentary and realised they were one of the greatest bands Britain has ever produced. More people should realise that imo.
Thanks Sean. A thoroughly enjoyable distraction.

If you're into hip-hop, R&B, funk etc this will be your thing.
Other mixes in the series worth checking are the Homeboy Sandman, Rich Medina and DJ Cam contributions. The Marc Mac Dilla Record Day Special is also pretty nifty.

Can't wait. National treasure. Opened with 'Fuckin' 'ell! It's Fred Titmus', then '99% of Gargoyles', but did this cover version.
Only criticism, which is true of gigs these days - just wasn't very loud.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by razorwire on Nov 1, 2013 18:17:47 GMT 1, Been a great month or so for music for me - loads of fantastic albums released in the last few weeks, only problem is getting time to listen to it all. At the moment it's the albums from Darkside, Manix and Daniel Avery that are doing it for me but I've got a load more I'm yet to listen to, the first time in ages I've had a big music back-log to work though!

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Stoko on Nov 1, 2013 22:23:30 GMT 1, My brother went along to the pop up store, and was amazed to see mick jones appear. Not as an official promo thing, he was passing. And no one recognised him apparently. Our John went over and had a chat with him for a few minutes and then a few people cottoned on to who he was and he got mobbed. Here's a couple of my favourite things in frames
And also this, original watercolour done from the side of the stage as part of the London Calling artwork
Any other Ray Lowry fans on here? I've got a few bits, anyone else?
