Denning, by sophart on Aug 2, 2007 13:09:33 GMT 1, Never posted before but felt compelled. Is no-one else a bit suspicious of posts from lots of 'new members' hyping up artists? And all saying things that seem to just want to hype them up rather than anything genuine seeming? I don't mind being told about new work and new artists in a straight up and honest way, but when people try to manipulate the hype I find that a bit patronising. Not saying for sure that's what happening here but there's certainly a lot of it.

Denning, by mcnuts on Aug 2, 2007 13:31:46 GMT 1, if you are talking about guy, he came on here and made it clear he isnt involved in any of that. It is a valid point and is no doubt done but perhaps this thread isnt the best place for the post as the only people "hyping" GDs work are people such as myself who are really impressed with the work and glad someone from the forum pointed it out to us fair point, just not in the GD thread.

Fair enough he was hyped up alot when he first hit Red Propeller. But IMO, he deserved every bit of this hype.
Since then, there have been a few posts by members about Guy. But as far as I can see, I wouldn't call "what do you think of this?" hype.
As far as hyping other artists go, I'm not sure

Yeah it happens all the time with lots of artists. You've just got to be really subjective and critical. The worst example though is Banksy hype, so many people have got a stake in his franchise its untrue. Even the marxist revolutionaries can't help hyping their pension portfolio's on here. Including me (although just a nancy left wing liberal personally). Its so difficult to be objective when you are financially linked to an artist. Best not to buy anything and be above it all really, like how plato wanted for anyone that ruled the land to have to be without personal assets, income or family. Great idea.

Denning, by reznyce on Aug 2, 2007 15:28:55 GMT 1, I posted a "what do you think of Guy?" thread a few days ago being unaware of other threads and the fact that he now has his own forum. I think the other folks who posted new threads were also unaware of the existing discussions. Anyway, Guy deserves the attention and does not need the "hype." His talent speaks for itself.

Well said ;D
This talk of hype is a load of rubbish If people like an artists work then they talk about it ;D simple as that ;D The people that talk about hype are normally the ones that never really supported the artist but when the values go sky high and they cant afford them they like to moan and ramble on about hype

I believe that you came on here talking about Denning because you saw his work and liked it. Simple as that. No other motives and no "hype".
There are a few people turning the word 'hype' into a dirty word. Denning has simply been praised for great work.

I also believe that certain artists have been 'hyped up' to some degree in the past & because of this influence it means someone could/will profit from this 'hype'.... But I definatley agree that if they've got the talent, then they will prosper in the long run.........

Denning, by sophart on Aug 2, 2007 18:29:26 GMT 1, Fair points all and maybe it should have been a thread in itself so apologies if Denning's getting it in the neck unfairly. To clarify of course I'm not referring to genuine fans, its when its galleries or dealers who we all know must come on here under aliases sometimes because it looks so obvious. Its different when they come on as themselves because its great to be kept in touch in that way. I also know of at least one artist who had several aliases and hyped himself up quite alot on a lot of forums, who of course I'm not going to name but I'm sure he wasn't alone. Of course if we like something we should say (and if I'm not too unpopular I'd like to come on again), its just underhand tactics that do seem to pop up sometimes that I object to is all. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Soph

all good points soph and hope you post more as its an important topic. i understanding artists showing their stuff but excessive, underhanded hype is no good. A discussion worth of its own thread no doubt

Denning, by goffy on Aug 7, 2007 12:39:14 GMT 1, Personally I like Guy Denning's work a lot. You can call me cynical if you want, but in a couple of months time the usual suspects will be slagging Guy off as being all hype. But I think there are enough genuine people out there who really like his work.

Denning, by alderevans2007 on Aug 7, 2007 12:52:15 GMT 1, I love his work. I enquired about it months ago due to a mention on this forum. Thanks whoever that was The hype is well deserved, and I think he has got a genuine fanbase which will continue to grow as he creates more work.
I have noticed that a few people aren't all that chuffed that there is quite a bit of "fine art" being discussed on this board. I totally understand that, because they have been here since the beginning, but all I can say is that I am very grateful for being introduced to artists that are right up my street.
Also, I know Silky is a big fan of Guy's, so if anyone disses him, watch your back because you might get chucked off ;D........only messing!
