Now am i wrong or dont POW authenticate street pieces ?

well.. I think it is legit........ looks like the safe was cleaned except for the banksy part, but all the rust etc that is in wall and piece is the same.. the "youre safe" part could be banksy too IMO..

not sure on PC, maybe they did hand out COAs on street pieces?

This piece was at Christie's last year and went unsold. The one on ebay looks to be the same as the one at auction as neither have the "you're safe" comment in the upper left hand corner or it was painted over later as the rats appear to be the same.

It's worth noting that there were some other street pieces that were sold and even traded at auction prior to PC stating they would no longer authenticate such works. I have to believe (though purely a guess) that their stance did not discredit the handful of works that were authenticated prior to that announcement.

There was a time pre-PC when certain street pieces in certain circumstances would be authenticated. The rules only came in when chancers started taking angle grinders to walls. No-one can expect them to have foreseen what would happen with Banksy and to have run a sophisticated and tight authentication service from the get go. I think PC came about only because it dawned on them how low people would stoop to make a quick buck. This piece could well have been authenticated some years ago because the owner could demonstrate that it hadn't been nicked.

Although having said that, I remember it being discussed that PC contacted all owners of authenticated street pieces and offered them a gallery replacement. That's just hearsay though.

Taking the piss with his price expectations - if there wasnt a mug out there to buy it for £20K, what makes the seller think there is an even bigger one who would spend £50k for it?

not my cup of tea really.. its a bloody safe at the end of the day! cool to have a 1 off, but its not exactly going to be easily displayed anywhere! unlike a nice original print or canvas on the wall..
