The Art of BAST, by Reader on May 5, 2022 13:17:18 GMT 1, A little taste of the Bast collection. If you ever want to part with papa Smurf or Bucky let me know. Hey mate, I'd consider that, but as I'm not really a motivated or committed seller you'd have to do some leg work and find a price point.

BÄST First New York solo show Titled: "MAS VINO" Plus the release of his new book "REVOLUCION DE PAPEL" February 12-March 10, 2005
Opening Reception and Release Party: Saturday February 12, 6-9pm featuring DJ Kienyo, Beer sponsor Yuengling
[Immediate Release] Contact: Yuki Minami (212) 505-0994 Transplant Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Brooklyn-based artist Bast titled “MAS VINO” This show will also celebrate the release of his new book "REVOLUCION DE PAPEL". A 60 paged soft covered book released in limited edition. Signed copied will be available on opening night. The exhibition will showcase a collection of new paintings on canvas along with select works on paper.
I can't remember exactly when I first started seeing Bast's work on the street but I know it was a good while back... maybe six or seven years. Being a fan of Motorhead and Spinal Tap, at first I just thought it was funny that Bast used an umlaut in his name, which I instinctively read as Bast even though the umlaut suggested Baste would be the proper pronunciation. The pronunciation dilemma alone now had me thinking about Bast's work, and as I discovered more Bast posters and stencils juxtaposing his name with loaded imagery of dictators, guns, and corporate logos, etc... I found myself frustrated trying to interpret it, but amused by the idea of the aggravation it might cause an uptight person. In the end I just accepted the work as a pop culture regurgitation that added beautiful texture to the street and stimulated a free association in the viewer that may not have anything to do with Bast's inspiration or intention. Bast's images look somewhat random, which in turn makes the work feel very punk and a bit nihilistic, but the design sense is very pleasing and I'm sure considered. I would call the overall feel 'organized chaos' in the same realm as Rauschenberg but using the street as the canvas. The textures that Bast uses in his work as well as those on the surfaces he integrates his pieces into give an instant sense of nostalgia and decay. Bast places his work on buildings and in alleys where the art actually adds life and improves the surfaces. Walking the streets of Manhattan or Brooklyn I've often thought I've found some obscure uncharted street art territory only to discover that Bast has beaten me to it. Bast's work inhabits NY in a way that only a true local who loves the city can execute. -Shepard Fairey 2005 (Los Angeles)
"Bast is an artist who represents for Brooklyn. He does this by writing 'BAST-BROOKLYN' on other people's property (and in one case when visiting London the side of a moving red double decker bus). He does this by speaking with a deep Williamsburg drawl that makes Al Pacino sound like a girl, but mainly he does it by making art that actually feels like Brooklyn. The borough is said to contain every culture and race that exists on planet earth but that doesn't necessarily make it interesting - so does the United Nations building but who wants to look at that? The key to Bast's appeal is not being very responsible. The work isn't so much a 'melting pot' of culture as a food blender, set on max and left until the motor burns out. His art is fast and loose and cheap, which is strangely why it endures, it's punchy and it has value. As the great disgraced film producer Robert Evans once said "Its irreverence that makes things sizzle, its irreverence that gives you the chance of truly touching magic..." -BANKSY, December 2004 (UK)
BAST's posters have been a constant part of the urban art landscape of New York and Europe for the past 10 years. While his artwork has remained a prominent fixture in the NY urban environment, he himself has remained a very elusive character. Acting something like a Loch Ness that rarely shows up in public and who's very existence has been debated. Very little is known of his work outside of what the public sees wheat pasted throughout the city. His works on canvas are a complete departure from what he presents on the street; it is aggressive and bold, offering a fresh take on POP art and appropriated imagery from all types of media. If you have ever wanted to know BAST's work more comprehensively, this show will be a unique opportunity to see something completely new and unexpected from this very elusive artist. -Patrick McNeil, 2005 (FAILE, New York)

Shepard Fairey, 2005 (Obey Giant, Los Angeles)
BANKSY, 2004 December (UK)
Patrick McNeil, 2005 (FAILE, New York)

Faile on Bast - The Artist's Artist - A short article with various artists talking about artists that have influenced their work. From the Guardian On-line.
'We first came across Bäst's work on the streets of Manhattan in 1998. There was something so alive about his art, and the fact that he worked in a variety of media, that really set it apart. Bäst's combinations and appropriation of pop culture were refreshing and raw. Older pieces like Molotov Dwarf – a man with the head of a Disney dwarf, holding a molotov cocktail – instilled the same kind of emotional contrast through image-pairing. He has an ability to deconstruct mass media in a way that is dirty and violent, yet beautiful and sincere'
Above 4 slightly different versions of the molotov cocktail print from 2001. The print may have been printed by Faile but not 100% sure about this. I have added a street version of the print in a different colourway.
