GRAFTER - Canvas release, by dealersam on Jul 19, 2008 12:36:38 GMT 1, i'm sorry but this is a definate no way for me. It looks like those canvases you get made up of Al Pacino in Scarface. Too ikea for me.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by slowmo on Jul 19, 2008 12:37:11 GMT 1, there's something about this one that puts me off, I guess its because its just too similar to the original image
I think your real strength has come through on eskimo child, a really simple single layer that just looks so striking and the weeping angel because the message is so strong. Not for me this one, but keep it up man, I enjoy your work

Without sounding disrespectful to Grafter cos I do admire him for getting out there, this style of image and the Al Pacino ones (and the majority of Logan Hicks pieces) are created using a filter in Adobe Illustrator. For those of you who are unaware of how simple it is to achieve this effect please get yourself a full copy/demo of the program onto your computer, bring in the image you like into a new document and hit "Live trace". Simple as that. You can set the number of levels (or "layers" as people like to call them) and you end up with this nice vectored illustration. It is a very effective way of creating a stencil-able (good word) image from any photograph. Obviously the skill comes in chosing an interesting image to use and then having the patience to neatly cut the thing out with a scalpel. Grafter has got these skills in my opinion. Keep up the good work. If I've got this completely wrong and he actually draws these images by hand then please forgive me. But it looks like a very typical Live Trace job to me.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by Grafter on Jul 21, 2008 19:44:55 GMT 1, OK, Ok, we all know how it's done.... Now try cutting it out 4 times and painting it neatly and in complete registration. Once you've mastered that, you may like to take it out, find a nice pissed stained doorway and try painting it with the wind blowing your paint and stencils all over the street, whilst keeping one eye out for the Old Bill. After that you can come on here and show us all the outcome.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by thinkbank on Jul 21, 2008 20:23:27 GMT 1, Grafter, I dont think anyone is critising your ability to get out and get your work up. Its been said before, but it was exceptional at Cans.
However I think the point that Little Bird is trying to make is, that as a canvas, its not that hard to produce this image, which considering the price tag, shouldnt really be the case.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by loucastel on Jul 21, 2008 21:09:49 GMT 1, Back in the day, when it was all trees round here and everything was made of wood and cost a penny, I used a button on CorelDraw called 'posterize'. One click would take you from this original photograph... To this... Or you could, simply by converting the original jpeg to a bitmap, without any other trickery involved, produce a simple one-layer job like this...
Coreldraw!! whoa thats a blast from the past, takes me right back, lol

I work as an Illustrator and packaging artworker so I massively appreciate the hard work that goes into your stencils. Tight registration and clean lines are tricky to achieve especially when you're cutting them by hand. Been reading your other thread so I understand why you might be getting defensive about your work today. All I'll say is you've got nothing but respect coming from my corner. No offence, eh?

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by Grafter on Jul 21, 2008 22:08:20 GMT 1, None taken, leftery....
actually really appreciate someone with a good understanding of the process taking an itrest in my work.
Just having a bad day and felling a little bit under attack. There are a lot of really great people on this forum but once you've been here a while you'll start to see there's a few knobs as well.

why all this aggression? people arern't automatically knobs because they dislike your work and tell you so, yeah well done for all the stencils you've been doing but you can't expect all seven thousand of us to bow down and worship the ground you walk on.
you only have to look and the truly mind-blowing work on stencil revolution.com and see some of the horrible comments left to know that not everyone is gonna like it.
you've obvisouly got a hell of a lot of support and fans of your work just be grateful for that....there are thousands of street artists who do it and get nothing back whatsoever.

I think it's the criricism of him as a person not his work that Grafter has taken offense to. And quite right. People should be able to slate (or praise) his work as much as they want as this is a forum but he shouldn't have to take personal insults.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by robinbanks on Jul 22, 2008 17:32:48 GMT 1, I have to agree, and while I realise it must be very hard to bite your tongue sometimes I have much more respect for artists who just let it ride. I'm not sure if I could resist biting back myself, but then again I'm not an artist and I didn't choose to put myself in that position in the first place.

GRAFTER - Canvas release, by LEVI C on Jul 22, 2008 19:55:03 GMT 1, I think this is a perfectly cut stencil and i bet it looks well nice in the flesh. For me though, i think it's kind of missing an idea behind it. I rek a couple of nice red devil horns would do the trick! even better if she had a rep for being a meany!
