shep hpm price check, by Harveyn on Mar 17, 2010 18:41:17 GMT 1, Image is everything with Shep. You will struggle to pick up anything at $4k now and the top images will command $10-12k.
If you find one you don't want let me know as I want a 3rd to hang 3 in a row.

i'm not the biggest shepard fairey fan in the world, but he would be the last artist on these boards this would apply to. 20 year plus career, museum shows, upcoming deitch exhibition, worldwide recognition, creator of the most iconic political image of modern times not enough to convince you of his sustainability?

shep hpm price check, by afroken on Mar 17, 2010 19:40:00 GMT 1, I think his career is completely entrenched and in the long-term he'll be very established. But there is a short sighted price bubble going on at the moment with prices increasing rapidly that I don't think is sustainable. I might be wrong but it would be the first time it didn't happen to one of these artists. It even happened to Banksy and there's a long way to go before prices get back to what some people were paying a couple of years ago, particularly when they were buying any old crap.

the difference is that shepard fairey has never experienced a rapidly inflating price bubble. his prices are some of the most steadily rising prices in the genre and have never declined. compare his prices on comparable pieces to his peers and you will see he might still be underpriced.

shep hpm price check, by Harveyn on Mar 17, 2010 21:35:32 GMT 1, I don't disagree on many of your thoughts Afroken but on this one I do.
You can still pick up large Shep original in the region of $11k-$30k. The price tag on a Banksy original a few years back was way in excess of this and even though his prices have reduced by over 50% in some cases, his prices are still way ahead of Sheps.
His prices over the last year have risen slowly but steadily.
I have to say that both these artists already command a small paragraph in the history of art. The unanswerable question is will it be more.

shep hpm price check, by Karl Read on Mar 17, 2010 22:59:50 GMT 1, Shepard has always priced his art amazingly well, there is a price point for everyone. His prices have steadily grown over about 2 decades. He doesnt get greedy and knows his market. He has paid his dues and is around to stay for good IMO. (I am biast as im a fan ) Harveyn is right, it's all about the image on fine art pieces with shep.

shep hpm price check, by afroken on Mar 17, 2010 23:11:42 GMT 1, I was only talking about secondary market prices. As much as I like Shep's work you'd have to have a screw loose to spend $10K or $12k for a HPM on wood. Primary prices remain pretty reasonable if you can get one.

shep hpm price check, by RPM on Mar 18, 2010 0:17:48 GMT 1, I think Shep's prices will see a sharper increase (followed by perhaps a slight decrease) in his prices on the secondary market once the Deitch show opens. Unfortunately, with Deitch's move to MOCA, I think Shep's immediate future (price-wise) is a bit uncertain. However, in the long run (which is all that really matters), I think his importance and prices will continue along a steady upward trajectary. Nonetheless, as others have suggested, with Shep, it's all about the strength of the particular image.
As far as primary source for his works, you really need to contact galleries that have previously shown his work (White Walls, for example, seems to have a large paper piece for sale). Otherwise, it's all about the secandary market. Unless you can afford the prices Deitch will be asking ...
One tip is to search the inventory of every gallery that you stumble across. You might be lucky, like I was, to find something from him at a gallery that typically caters to a much different crowd/shows much different types of work. In my case, it turns out the gallery owner was selling a piece from his personal collection. Needless to say, I scored a great piece (imo) at a fraction of the going rate.
Just my $.02. Good luck in your search.

That price increase has already happened pre-Deitch. Prices have jumped 30-50% in the past 2 months on the super-premium high end pieces.
I could see them running up a little more after the opening, but I think they're much more likely to just maintain the levels the've already been quietly trading at the last few months.

shep hpm price check, by volvic on Mar 18, 2010 18:37:37 GMT 1, i have owned a few shep fine art pieces and have to say its very easy to get caught up in the hype and over pay for pieces.
i would buy shep all day long at primary but i am not on the supposed 2 year wait lists so no chance of that ever happening. As afroken said be careful buying at secondary pricing as i also believe that there is a bubble waiting to burst. people who buy at primary are safe but i can see some people who paid a lot for not great images will get burned somewhere soon down the line. end of the day quality always speaks volumes so hold out for the right image and good luck.

shep hpm price check, by Harveyn on Mar 19, 2010 17:34:50 GMT 1, Primary prices for HPMs on wood were $3k last year and $7k for HPMs on paper. I am sure primary prices have risen since then.
There is some disparity between primary and secondary prices at the moment but not that bad considering the lack of supply from primary.

shep hpm price check, by snausages on Mar 19, 2010 19:45:02 GMT 1, If you ask me this is another house of cards waiting to collapse, another hyped up bubble. I would buy Shep on the secondary market with extreme caution i'm not the biggest shepard fairey fan in the world, but he would be the last artist on these boards this would apply to. 20 year plus career, museum shows, upcoming deitch exhibition, worldwide recognition, creator of the most iconic political image of modern times not enough to convince you of his sustainability? But I don't think it's about sustainability we're talking about hype and perception vs. reality. He may be famous and have staying power, but that doesn't mean he's immune from bubbles. And his work really might not appreciate at the rate you might expect for someone as "famous." There are many other factors.
If you love Fairey and want to support him I can't argue with that. But if you're thinking in these terms and you're in the market to spend 30-40k I really think you're better off going down to Deitch Gallery right now and buying a Rosson Crow painting.

shep hpm price check, by RPM on Mar 20, 2010 3:46:09 GMT 1, From my (albeit limited) knowledge, the Deitch show is supposed to be all large canvas works (no LP covers, wood, metal or paper pieces). All of the images will be from his new (see recent print releases) portrait series. If you are serious, I would try to get in touch with someone at Deitch. But the price range is supposed to be $30K and up. It also wouldn't surprise me if the common folk (like me) will not be able to buy anything as I'm sure Deitch's buyers list is fairly long ...
