i'm not the biggest shepard fairey fan in the world, but he would be the last artist on these boards this would apply to. 20 year plus career, museum shows, upcoming deitch exhibition, worldwide recognition, creator of the most iconic political image of modern times not enough to convince you of his sustainability?

the difference is that shepard fairey has never experienced a rapidly inflating price bubble. his prices are some of the most steadily rising prices in the genre and have never declined. compare his prices on comparable pieces to his peers and you will see he might still be underpriced.

You can still pick up large Shep original in the region of $11k-$30k. The price tag on a Banksy original a few years back was way in excess of this and even though his prices have reduced by over 50% in some cases, his prices are still way ahead of Sheps.

His prices have steadily grown over about 2 decades. He doesnt get greedy and knows his market. He has paid his dues and is around to stay for good IMO. (I am biast as im a fan  )

Unfortunately, with Deitch's move to MOCA, I think Shep's immediate future (price-wise) is a bit uncertain. However, in the long run (which is all that really matters), I think his importance and prices will continue along a steady upward trajectary. Nonetheless, as others have suggested, with Shep, it's all about the strength of the particular image.
As far as primary source for his works, you really need to contact galleries that have previously shown his work (White Walls, for example, seems to have a large paper piece for sale). Otherwise, it's all about the secandary market. Unless you can afford the prices Deitch will be asking ...
One tip is to search the inventory of every gallery that you stumble across. You might be lucky, like I was, to find something from him at a gallery that typically caters to a much different crowd/shows much different types of work. In my case, it turns out the gallery owner was selling a piece from his personal collection. Needless to say, I scored a great piece (imo) at a fraction of the going rate.

That price increase has already happened pre-Deitch. Prices have jumped 30-50% in the past 2 months on the super-premium high end pieces.
I could see them running up a little more after the opening, but I think they're much more likely to just maintain the levels the've already been quietly trading at the last few months.

But I don't think it's about sustainability we're talking about hype and perception vs. reality. He may be famous and have staying power, but that doesn't mean he's immune from bubbles. And his work really might not appreciate at the rate you might expect for someone as "famous." There are many other factors.
If you love Fairey and want to support him I can't argue with that. But if you're thinking in these terms and you're in the market to spend 30-40k I really think you're better off going down to Deitch Gallery right now and buying a Rosson Crow painting.
