Shepard Fairey- Basquiat., by Grubster on Feb 10, 2010 17:57:03 GMT 1, fine art? no but DEITCH apparently does. And for the show being sold out? not sure, but i do know that museums get 1st dibs and thats who they are looking to 1st and then the BIG-TIME collectors then maybe us common folk who have been waiting for a buyers preview! odds are their won't be anything left and the theme of the show is all portrait work of ppl who have influenced him through-out his life! And not to mention the small canvases start at 35K, little too pricey for me considering i picked up some og's from his WW show in 08 for 1500 and 7500.

Well good for Fairey that Deitch likes him, but I don't like things just because Deitch does. If Deitch can get major museums to buy out this show he would be just about the best salesman ever. But really, Deitch does have a miss now and then, that hack of a portrait above is a perfect example...
The hyperbole here is getting a bit carried away. Museums and uh "BIG-TIME" collectors always have first dibs at any major show that takes place in NYC. It's nothing to get your panties in a bunch over.
Of course it looks off, it's because it's a tracing instead of a "drawing."

Is it a touch of the Rio Ferdinands around the mouth/jaw area?
On a serious note fair play to Shep, 20+ years of getting up..

I have no personal feeling either way towards the show and actually not a big fan of Fairey's portraits.. I was just informing other FM on here who asked questions and I happened to have a little info about the show.. why do you feel i took offense? seems like your just looking to bash Fairey..if thats the case, then fine for you..i could care less either way..take care

Shepard Fairey- Basquiat., by jamesreeve5 on Feb 10, 2010 18:35:23 GMT 1, Whats the definition of a "small canvas" for this show anyways? If the smallest one is 10 x 12 feet then I don't think there is a surge in prices going on. Museum interest? Maybe MOCA LA will buy one (wink wink), but don't forget that the vast majority of museum directors don't like Fairey's work! Sure you'll say, "That's not true James, just look at his traveling retrospective!" Let's be honest here, it's going/went to the ICA Boston, the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and the CAC Cincinnati. The two latter museums needed the revenue that it brought in, and ICA Boston might have as well, but it's harder to determine that.
If I was the museum director of a cash strapped midlevel contemporary museum (aren't they all cash strapped these days) I would take the Fairey exhibition in a heartbeat - whether or not I liked his work. You get a swell of young visitors paying admission, and often times their parents have to pay admission too. Then on top of that, you have your giftshop swarming with the two most lucrative types of people: teenagers and fanboys. Next thing you know, your museum giftshop is having its best month ever as well. Sure the old fart donors and annual members won't like the show (and maybe most of the museum staff as well), but you'll go back to appeasing the bread and butter of the museum after you've collected on this.

Shepard Fairey- Basquiat., by snausages on Feb 10, 2010 18:38:22 GMT 1, ^ hmmm, good points james. Actually it is likely that some of these canvases will be donated (by Deitch, Fairey or his supporters) to LA Moca and or other museums to get him inside.
On a serious note fair play to Shep, 20+ years of getting up.. True, he is definitely a visual force of our times. Just having a little fun at the expense of the hype and hyperbole here. His pervasiveness deserves recognition, ...of some sort.

Shepard Fairey- Basquiat., by Francis on Feb 10, 2010 20:51:06 GMT 1, shepard fairey portraits suck. why? they say more about the artist than they do about the subject. what good true portraits has he done, where you say, "oh, this middle-aged suburban white boy totally GETS the true essence of this black hero"? or, "THIS reveals so much of the struggles this political figure goes through"? instead, you look at a Fairey portrait and say, that's a shepard fairey portrait....he put patterns on it and shit and distorted the face and made the hands ugly and collaged paper on it and glued his old checks on it and put it on a t-shirt and chose an image that some other dude created or shot from their artistic perspective

If there were nods to Basquiat here in the execution it would be something but there is nothing - not even a half-assed Fairey pastiche of his own potential. Francis has nailed it.

Shepard Fairey- Basquiat., by twist65 on Feb 11, 2010 2:05:42 GMT 1, for me it looks like Sheps 'fine art' is going the same way as his print releases - when he gets it right its absolutely brilliant, but then its interspersed with a pile of dross and mediocre pieces. Plus his style is so copied that now his own (studios) bad pieces look like fan art. If he was more selective about his releases then I'm sure there would be less fuel for negative opinions. But also less $$$ in the bank!

that's where the problem is. it is a filter and not an interpretation. why don't you tell us what his interpretation of Basquiat here is? explain his thought process, what he wanted to communicate, what he wanted the viewer to see. what is his interpretation of jasper johns or jason jessee or paul watson?
you can interchange the subjects in any two of shepard fairey's portraits and it wouldn't make any difference.
and what's up with the snobbery? you want me to take my p***s out and compare?
