grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by dancingbear on Feb 23, 2010 20:18:18 GMT 1, not sure if this is the right forum, (mods feel free to move if is not) but i need some help. i bought a grafter blue splash on the secondary market. unfortunately the seller did not fully disclose the shape of the print. when i received it and questioned the waviness of the print and if there was water damage he replied ....
"About the waviness near the border of the upper portion, it has always been like that as far as I can remember. I got a reminder of it being there when I packed it. It has slept out of my mind before as I tend to remember damages like dings, creases, corners etc. but tend to forget things like waviness.. I know some of my Mccarthy's tend to become wavy as the paper ages, even when stored in perfect condition.. hard to explain, some paper are more prone to it I believe and from what I remember on the Splash, I couldn't identify the source nor clearly state that it was external, so I took it as it was.. hope it won't cause too much of a problem.."
anyhow was wondering : 1. do you think this is water damage? 2. does anyone have a splash that looks like this ie. can it be the paint that was used and how it dried? 3. i really love the print, and they are hard to find...what would you do in this scenario? - here are some photos i took....

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by Deleted on Feb 23, 2010 20:31:24 GMT 1, Hello
It looks like it was damaged in the flattening process. Its not that bad really, i have a Vhils like this. I was stupid and rushed it. But when its framed its all good.
Grafter is/was a forum member, if your really into the image i think he still has a 1 off for sale on his website. A splash on wood. Better than a print anyday!

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by rosstierney on Feb 23, 2010 20:38:00 GMT 1, they've more likely been caused by the following rather than water damage:
1) been kept in the tube since purchase 2) forced flat 3) the paint on the paper (drying process maybe) 4) a mix of 1, 2 & 3
like liam says, vhils editions can be similar as can prefab's britannia.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by lastpost on Feb 23, 2010 20:49:09 GMT 1, I think the problem is the fact that the paper is painted, as well as the image if that makes sense. I have got a Tibetan boy and it is very wavy due to the paper being hand painted.
Not a problem for me, but the buyer should have disclosed it.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by lifeonwalls on Feb 23, 2010 20:55:00 GMT 1, I think it's a combination of the paint and how it dried.
The waves would be running the other way if it was due to being in the tube for too long or being flattened incorrectly.

lastpost you stole my thunder I was literally just going to write about the Tibetan boy, I've seen many of grafters prints look very wavy.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by wimpy on Feb 23, 2010 23:49:11 GMT 1, It is the paint on the paper. Tell grafter to use different paper or enjoy it the way it is. A mess of my first few Failes were wavy beyond belief and still stinkin of violent ink and coffee.
You can flatten it out, though, in most cases by stretching the fibers back out. Grab two pieces of foamcore or something similar and sandwich it. Then sandwich that between two heavy pieces of plywood or something. Make sure the weight is evenly distributed.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by harryh74 on Feb 24, 2010 0:35:59 GMT 1, That is how they are, I have a white one and even without a painted background its a little wavy. Float the bugger in a nice deep box frame and enjoy its natural shape, remember it is an original and not a screenprint.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by Standard on Feb 24, 2010 14:45:03 GMT 1, Don't worry about the slight wave, float it and frame it as Harry says.
If anyone is half considering selling their white version on paper please drop me a pm please. i have a good buyer lined up for one of these.

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by James Baker on Feb 24, 2010 15:43:56 GMT 1, I am pretty sure the skin of the paint drys faster than the paper and contracts pulling the page together and causing the wave. Soaking the paper and stretching it or painting the other side first would have prevented this - I think. But surely this piece has a big element of expression about it and the immediacy of the process kind of adds to that?

grafter-splash-purchased-HELP needed!, by Dellboyy on Feb 24, 2010 15:49:34 GMT 1, Just to add, definitely looks like the process of creating the piece to me, i've had a similar effect myself when working with paint on certain types of paper!
As said, to me that would be part of what makes each unique and original, rather than just a flat print.
