Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by ABC on Apr 20, 2007 7:55:02 GMT 1, Real or not, it will be interesting to see if Andipa keep it as IMO its not the look they would want to keep once the Banksy show finishes.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by lesroy on Apr 20, 2007 7:55:55 GMT 1, Thanx for showing us the picture Senna... its a shame if it is not real as it would have been wicked to know that Banksy was back out in the street with his cans of steel!
For me I think its a fake as the right foot (as we look att it) has not the usual detail.
Respect for finding us summat interesting to discuss geezer (hmmm 27 now... how appropriate?!)

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by Strange Al on Apr 20, 2007 8:59:33 GMT 1, Here's my 2 cents worth - I too think this is a fake!
It's not necessarily the lack of detail or overspray which convince me it's a fake. Many confirmed Banksy's have a lot of overspray and aren't particularly clean in finish - take a look at many of the rats in Wall and Piece, including the Gangsta rat for example. On that particular wall surface, which looks textured in the photos, it'd be pretty hard not to get some overspray and lose definition. That said, the actual stencil looks a lot like one of the ebay stencils (as Nu mentioned) and the paint doesn't seem right (as per Absyrd). Moreover, I just don't think Mr B would be overtly endorsing Andipa, as many others have commented.
Regardless whether Andipa had a hand in this or not or even whether it's Banksy (I personally think it'll turn out to be a fellow forum member), it's definitely a good publicity opportunity for the Gallery. Quick call to a tabloid news office and you've got Andipa in the papers again. As for what will happen to it - IMO they'll buff it once they've had a chance to use the publicity.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by Curley on Apr 20, 2007 10:31:40 GMT 1, IMO if Banksy tagged Andipa he would have done something much more intelligent than putting a Ghetto Rat outside.
Surely he would have put up "i cant believe you morons buy this shit" or "Sale ends"
i think they will have done this themselves.

Not sure they'd have done it themselves, but totally agree about the subject matter.
I'm sure Banksy would have done something more relevant.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by senna on Apr 20, 2007 12:46:02 GMT 1, as said previously,i really dont believe a place like Andipa would pull such a cheap stunt. If it was them, it would be plastered all over the papers already.
i also think its a forum member.
as Curly said, SALE ENDS/MORONS would have been a much better choice.
let's all just say, FOR ARGUMENTS SAKE:it was not the gallery. It wasn't Banksy & it wasn't me(promise).
what do people think about someone tagging places with mr.B's images?
i don't think i like the idea

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by blacksy on Apr 20, 2007 13:16:26 GMT 1, Hmmmm, a Gallery like the Andipa must have CCTV, surely if they werent interested in the attention they'd be looking to prosecute! In no way do i reckon its a Banksy, i reckon its a publicity stunt! possibly by the gallery, but i wouldnt have thought it was their style. I reckon someone on here's decided to take "matters into their own hands"

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by Strange Al on Apr 20, 2007 13:46:46 GMT 1, Senna - funnily enough, I was almost tempted to start a separate thread posing that very same question.
Firstly, the phenomenon of copy-cat Bankys on the streets is by no means a new thing. The rats and many of the other simple Banksy images have cropped up all over the world. I'm pretty certain the majority of them were not sprayed by Banksy himself. These days, you don't even have to go to the trouble of cutting the stencil yourself to get in on the action.
The fact that they're not sprayed by Banksy doesn't actually bother me. Providing of course that they're well executed and sprayed in places where they have some relevance. Regardless of who sprayed them, they are and will remain Banksy images. Reading Banksy's comments about his rats - I feel that other people spraying them actually fits in with the ethos of those particular images. I really wouldn't be surprised to hear that he likes seeing his little vermin spread without control. Not that I think he necessarily encourages it, like say Space Invader does for example. However, a Banksy rat stencil was given away with Bizarre magazine some years back, presumably with Mr B's approval.
That's not to say that it doesn't annoy me that people will go out stenciling and risk arrest, but can't even be bothered to come up with their own images. These individuals certainly can't be considered street artists. I also wouldn't approve of a gallery, like Andipa, spraying a fake in an effort to generate publicity, though as I stated before I don't believe they're responsible for it. Though whoever did has done them a favour!

i agree about the rats appearing all over, its a little like the way Obey does things and no one has issue with that.
Imagine getting caught and trying to convince the Police that your not really banksy and you were copying his style and images.
"Thats what they all say son, off to the cells with you" ;D ;D ;D

thats what i don't agree with: any idiot cant hold a stencil in one hand & a spray can in the other.
like in this case, we are generally agreed that this was not Banksy because of all the reasons mentioned; application, image blah blah.
i would hate to see Banksy's appearing all over the place in stupid, non relevant places.
if someone was arrested, imagine the story
wonder what Laz thinks about all this

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by dkla on Apr 20, 2007 16:09:35 GMT 1, I agree it's clear for all of the reasons everyone has already stated that it's not Banksy who recently hit up Andipa. That said, I'm guessing Banksy doesn't despise the gallery as one person on this forum implied. After all, the gallery put on a very professional show, delivered good customer service and in the process of making their acquisitions for the show, undoubtedly was partly attributable for the strong prices his work has been commanding across the board (e.g., ebay, galleries, high-end auction). These aren't things I wouldn't imagine Banksy is opposed to.
Banksy puts his art in the world, makes in art accessible to the masses via relatively low prices through POW, and I'm sure accepts and understands that once it's sold and out the doors of POW it has a life of it's own.
This process, coupled with the genius of his work in the street and the endorsement of the art establishment and media is all contributing towards increasing his legend today. Banksy is already one of the most important artists of our generation and he's really just begun, hasn't he?

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by zippyblip on Apr 20, 2007 19:34:27 GMT 1, does anyone have a price list on how much they are asking for the pieces?
Don't have a price list but I was over there a couple of weeks ago. £5K-6K for the signed prints, I seem to recall mega-bucks for the canvases- up to £80K etc etc.
I looked, but sadly didn't buy. I did by the catalogue though, which is really nicely done.
