Banksy Canvases, by ed on Jan 23, 2008 14:51:59 GMT 1, I was just in my local natwest, and the guy i was seeing asked me why i was in so much debt. After telling him it was cos i bought things like Banksy, he said that they currently had FIVE Banksy canvases in their safe...a couple of which were so big they had to be carried by two people
ed really wants to see them....

while i don't think that street art should be in vaults, whats wrong with it being in museums? i feel like there should be a certain nmber of street artists who are shown in museums, as their art should be immortalized. not all of it, the whole point is that it is there and then gone, but it is all going to be very important in 50-100 years and there should be hard proof of its existance. and in a museum, at least the public gets to view it. in a vault it does nothing for anyone.

Banksy Canvases, by robinbanks on Jan 23, 2008 21:01:58 GMT 1, It's hardly street art if it's been done on a canvas. Unless it was originally hanging on the corner of Brick Lane and Whitechapel.

Banksy Canvases, by otomi on Jan 23, 2008 22:55:15 GMT 1, interesting point but I think if Faile or Bast do something you can still call it streetart but it is not on the street so I don't really know - I personally like museums and have no problem with some street art in museums but as said earlier is it still street art if it is not on the street? The idea of street art was to bring it to the people, get art out of the museums have it interact with the surroundings other artists etc. - if it is in a museum you can't put something next to it, it doesn't change over time ...

Banksy Canvases, by robinbanks on Jan 24, 2008 0:11:43 GMT 1, I'm with you mate. I'm totally against people tearing down walls and putting them in galleries (or using them to line their pockets) but if these "street" artists produce work on canvas and then go on to have successful careers it's pretty inevitable that some of it is going to end up in a gallery... or even the vault of some investment bank.

I don't believe Sotheby's or Christie's would attempt to sell anything without one anymore. I presume this was done during the New Orleans campaign:

Of course, that's where it was from. I guess with all those gift symbols it was done for someone when he was down in New Orleans painting the street piece.

I don't keep track but I recall others saying that there was a recent gift print auctioned at Bonhams sans PC COA. I don't know whether that is true or false but do recall the recent discussion. Certainly the vast majority (if not all) Banksy work offered at Bonhams has a COA.
