Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by solar77 on Apr 8, 2008 19:58:17 GMT 1, "Bad art hurts everyone" does sort of sound like something Banksy would write. Did you ask any of the people who mentioned Banksy where they heard that he tagged the piece?

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by Baurmann Gallery on Apr 8, 2008 20:49:33 GMT 1, Yeah, basically the stories we heard were that when Banksy was doing his βNO MORE HEROβSβ mural on Melrose, writing appeared on MEARβs mural along with the eyes being crossed out in RED. People in the neighborhood were upset at the writing, since they loved MEARβs last mural there. Like in many neighborhoods, rumors start to quickly get passed around on who did something like that.
I am not sure if there are other circumstances that lead to the rumors other than Banksyβs piece being around the corner, the writing being on MEARβs piece right around the time he was doing it, and the neighborhood being so upset and wanting to find out who did it and why. Overall, the consensus from so many different people we have talked to have all said it was Banksy, though they did not go into more details [we should have askedβ¦but like I said, until I saw the pics, we did not really think too much into it]β¦
MEAR has wanted to repaint his old spot for a while but just has been slammed with everything that is going on! He just showed up and started scrapping the wall and was going to paint it and the owner came up to him to ask him βWhat the FUCK he was doingββ¦.to which he responded, βI am fixing my muralββ¦
When he told her who he was she was very happy, as she was trying to track him down to repaint the wall. She was one of the people who was not happy in the least with the writing and had heard from several people too [including her husband] that it was Banksy who wrote that.

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by leumasdarnley on Apr 8, 2008 21:06:22 GMT 1, I don't understand why you are going to such lengths to stir the pot on this. I see no motive for Banksy to pull of a childish prank like that. First of all the mural is good quality so why would anyone with a brain dface the piece let alone Banksy. You guys sell MEAR and Banksy this is a self promotional witch hunt IMO.....

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by dog byte on Apr 8, 2008 23:11:19 GMT 1, Have to say I feel this is ridiculous.... This is my neighborhood (live around the corner). This is one street away from Fairfax High School. Like you said the area is tagged to death.. I don't see any similarities in the writings..
I do remember that the mural was well worn before this tag was added...
I also have to question the agenda behind this thread...

Thanks for the compilements on the piece!
I am very transparent about my business dealings with MEAR. This is not trying to stir the pot, just trying to utilize the expertise of those on the forums and see if anyone has any more info or feedback on what I had originally asked. I personally see similarities in some other street pieces but I also agree 100% I do not think he would do such a thing.
Also, if people want to know the background of how it came about, I am going to oblige because like you have the opinion of above, anytime you have Banksy involved in anything, it is going to get notoriety. That is not MEARβs or my fault, but due to it I have to be willing to explain the details [because I feel it makes you a target of accusations like above if people do not understand why the question is being posted in the first place]. That way, in my onion, people are free to manifest their own thoughts and ideas on the matter using the facts we are using to base ours on. Overall, I personally do not think looking at anything objectively is a bad thing.
I also see nothing wrong in posing the question, especially if pictures could hopefully at least settle if it even looks like something he may have done. I love and respect Banksyβs work and have the fortunate pleasure of having some of his canvases. I would love to tell MEAR for sure 100% that was not Banksy. People are often wrong and rumors and just that, and if that is the case, then that would be spectacular, but like I said, I donβt see anything wrong in asking otherβs feedback on similarities among the letters in that piece against past street work.

Actually, this is the type of attention that detracts from his mural and is bad in my opinion. He is painting the Dalai Lama with peace and love being the central and in our opinion all of this is extreme BS we would rather not deal withβ¦but as a graffiti artist on the streets, if someone goes over your piece, it is very disrespectful and something someone like MEAR has to look into. You are welcome to your opinions, but being in LA, you should know the passion MEAR has for his art, and if anyone disrespects that, it is a very personal subject for him.
I do understand and respect people's questioning of motives, as there is a TON of hype and manipulation in the art world in general, but if you live around the corner, MEAR is painting there right now if you want to ask him about it directly or just check out the new pieceβ¦I truly believe that anyone who talks to him about it for 5 minutes will be able to decide if it is some PR attempt, or something that has concerned him to the point that I reached out on the forums. I not feel comfortable naming specific individuals who told us this information but if you go down to the wall, I am sure some of them may be around too. He is on the corner of Melrose and Spaulding in the back alleyway finishing it upβ¦Tons of people have been stopping by so he will not think twice about it in the least and is always happy to chat with people while painting.

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by Prescription Art on Apr 9, 2008 0:53:29 GMT 1, It looks nothing like Banksy's writing. The only similarity is that it's been done with red spraypaint.
And i've never known him be disrespectful to another artist.... even those who fuck with his work.

this will get you no real information and only stir up drama. why? what's the benefit?
sorry to insinuate that you had a hidden agenda with this thread. that was unfair on my end..
the dalai lama mural looks exceptional..

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by BME on Apr 9, 2008 1:00:51 GMT 1, I think that people are being far too precious about this. It's street art. It comes, it changes and it goes. Someone has just as much 'right' to 'deface' MEAR's work as he has to paint it. If you don't want people to 'deface' your work then put it on canvas and hang it indoors.

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by top on Apr 9, 2008 1:21:19 GMT 1, I personally have no doubt that Derek's thread is nothing but of genuine interest and intrigue.
From what Derek has written above, I perceive that he purely wishes to hear others opinions, to which many people have added constructively..which I am sure he and MEAR appreciate.
Anyway, whomsoever defaced the mural has every right to 'tag' a street piece, yet, its such a shame as it was a remarkable piece by MEAR whom sprayed it up for the people..just like Banksy does..

I am extremely glad you got a chance to check that out. It is one of the best pieces he has ever done in my opinion and I was blown away to see most of it completed.
I agree if it was Banksy there should have been tons of photos. He has also never done anything like that to my knowledge. But basically, our one of the main questions still perplexing us is why do the people in the neighborhood seem to think they know something [that we donβt know or never heard about until this weekend] and why is everyone so sure it was Banksy?
I found the picture while searching this weekend, but the link I got it from was not saved [so I did not want to mention the blog that had it too until I could find itβ¦]. This is another store that commented on it. They did it in a blog right after it happened though.

Banksy 09/30/06
Banksy just had a huge show in L.A.. So big that I was waiting in line at the conerstore, and the tabloids even had articles about the Banksy show. I guess Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attended and dropped a bunch of change at the opening. Good for Banksy, because he is amazing, and he still finds the time to do pieces around town. Across the street from the HVW8 shop on Melrose he did huge "No More Heroes" piece. He even took the time to deface a piece in alley, writting "Bad Art Hurts Everyone" over the piece and painting the eyes red. Have a look.

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by seidbereit on Apr 9, 2008 11:31:25 GMT 1, I can't believe individual letters are being compared and analysed.
Quite aside from the fact that I doubt very much you can compare "handwriting" samples done with a spraycan the same way as those done with a pencil, can anyone here for one minute truthfully say the phrase "bad art hurts everyone" smacks of something Banksy would say/write? Seems completely against the grain to me - I see no need to investigate it any deeper.
Then again, maybe whoever signed the Trolleys and SAS prints did it?

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by mcnuts on Apr 9, 2008 15:01:37 GMT 1, Banksy Did It. Mear One is one of the most obnoxious, egotistical, bastard street artist's out there, and that's saying alot for a Los Angeles writer! In group show situations, he should be careful of whose work he moves off the wall and tosses to the ground to replace with his own. Banksy did this as an act of solidarity with another artist, from an incident that happened almost a decade ago. Every project that Mear is involved with collectively with other artist's goes sour very quickly. Furthermore, he's NOT a good artist. What is it about this piece that is technically advanced, or particularly witty? Nothing. I'll reserve judgement on the new piece, but considering what I've seen in the past, it won't be anything great, I'm sure. Mear is never in the same league, and will never be in the same league. This is the controversy you wanted by calling him out like this, so hear you go. Banksy says Mear Sucks! Good Luck selling prints now that you've made it public knowledge on this board. You would be wise to distance yourself from Mear right now, he's not going anywhere in the grand scheme of the art world. I assure you.
interesting 2nd post! How can you confirm this though?

OOF!

Mear One πΊπΈ Street Art β’ New Print Release , by mcster on Apr 9, 2008 16:31:42 GMT 1, Banksy Did It. Mear One is one of the most obnoxious, egotistical, bastard street artist's out there, and that's saying alot for a Los Angeles writer! In group show situations, he should be careful of whose work he moves off the wall and tosses to the ground to replace with his own. You sound very confident in all this. I know you say it doesn't need expanding upon, but if you ever get the urge to let more out please do - whatever Mear did must have been pretty damn serious if Banksy is carrying out a revenge attack for another artist almost ten years later? Would love to know more... ;D
