Banksy By ANTONIA HOYLE Last updated at 1:52 AM on 01st June 2008
They have been chipped out of walls by thieves and scrubbed off by zealous cleaners.
Now a work by the mysterious street artist Banksy could be driven away – for an estimated £500,000.
The design, on the side of a lorry trailer – which doubles as a family home for the current owners – is due to sell at auction.
Called Fragile Silence, it shows commandos landing stereo equipment on a beach.
The trailer’s owners, Maeve Neal and Nathan Welland, say Banksy has authenticated the work, which he completed before they drove the truck to the Glastonbury Festival in 1998.
And instead of them paying him, he gave them two free festival tickets for providing the ‘canvas.’
At the time Banksy, whose real name has never been confirmed, was little known. But since then he has gathered a celebrity fan base including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Ms Neal, 34, explained: ‘We have known Banksy for more than 12 years. He heard that we were travelling down to Glastonbury and asked if we would give over the sides of the truck as a work space. He wanted a large white canvas.’
The couple, based in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, make their living supplying circus tents but now hope the sale will allow them to buy a conventional home for their four children.
Ms Neal is resigned to losing the two-bedroom, refrigerated trailer, bought 11 years ago for £1,000. She said: ‘We had our fourth child, Neo, five months ago and the lorry is becoming a bit of a squeeze.
‘We’ve been travelling around the country for ten years providing festivals with tents. We’ve seen the price of Banksy’s work go up and up and we hope his generosity can help us build our new home.
‘Banksy is a little mysterious but the man we know is someone who is really giving.’
The sale is being handled by Norfolk art dealer William Burroughs, who said: ‘The work is genuine.’
Last year, Banksy’s painting, Space Girl And Bird, sold for £288,000 and in January a wall displaying his work in Notting Hill, West London, fetched £208,000 online.

Circus tents are used for pretty much most events now, most big festi's will whack the DJ & mc in the middle. works a treat!!

What an odd post. If, as you previously claimed, this is your vehicle and has been your home for years why not say so ? what's with the "on good authority" bit ? Ambiguous posts are just popular round here not compulsory.
Also the article doesn't say anything about being desperate for a house but does say "help us build our new home" which infers the building of a house, possibly the most widely held utopian dream on site, fuck I've even heard brew heads give it the whole build a house in the woods bollocks.

That"ll put a few quid in the Banksy
A COUPLE hope to make £500,000 selling their mobile home — as it’s covered in art by Banksy. Nathan Welland, 37, and Maeve Neal, 34, met Banksy through pals ten years ago when he was an unknown street artist.
He used their trailer to paint a 30ft by 7ft mural of commandos with a stereo and scenes including a monkey playing drums.
Banksy’s fans now include stars like Brad Pitt, so the couple and their four kids, of King’s Lynn, Norfolk, are auctioning their two-bed trailer to buy a bigger home.
Last year a Banksy painting sold for £288,000, and art dealer William Burroughs said: "The pieces are unique, and the big picture could make a record price."

Banksy Glastonbury • Painted Trailer, by robo on Jun 2, 2008 12:01:58 GMT 1, I remember seeing this trailer at Glastonbury in the late 90s in an area with several graffiti artists at work; this piece was particularly striking and I got into a conversation with the artists. I guess one of them must have been Banksy!

Must say, I think it is a huge shame that another classic has been ruined. How cool would it of been to live your life in a £1,000,000 piece of artwork, fuck society and all that.
Good luck anyway roguetrooper, don't spend all the money on vodka.... buy a nice porsche or something

Banksy Glastonbury • Painted Trailer, by dreadnatty on May 28, 2015 15:01:31 GMT 1, Travellers to net £400k after Banksy paints on the side of their TRAILER
Banksy artwork the Silent Majority is to go under the hammer Known as Silent Majority, the artwork was created in the late 1990s and is now set to fetch a whopping £400,000 when it goes for auction.
Banksy was said to have approached the pair of new age travellers outside the dance tent at Glastonbury and asked if they would let him use the side of their home as a canvass.
The pair obliged and Banksy spent three days alongside his fellow Bristol-based graffiti partner-in-crime Inkie working on the piece.
It's seen as a hugely important works from Banksy, who remains anonymous, because it's one of his earliest known pieces.
It was painted freehand with very little use of stencils, unlike his more famous graffiti works.
Mary McCarthy, a leading UK street art specialist, said: "We've seen some incredible works by Banksy on the market in the last few years. Experts believe the art will fetch up to £400,000 at auctiion.
"However, I think in terms of provenance and uniqueness, this one tops them all. For me what is quite special about this piece is it's one of the few freehand pieces on the market. It really is a rare piece."
The traveller owners, who also want to remain anonymous, said: "The significance of Silent Majority is that it depicts this era and was painted whilst the free party movement was in its prime.
"It depicts the last rave and hip-hop scene of the time."
The artwork, which is 10 metres wide and has been taken off the trailer, will go under the hammer in Paris, France, next month.
It bears the words: "It's better not to rely too much on silent majorities... for silence is a fragile thing...one loud noise and it's gone."
Auctioneer Marielle Digard said: "This is a piece from the very beginning of Banksy's career. It's scale and history makes it a true original."
The work shows figures, dressed like soldiers, storming a site with a speaker in an inflatable raft.
It comes with a certificate of authenticity and signatures from from both Banksy and Inkie.
