Guy Denning's show last night, by Neate Michael on Feb 7, 2008 12:06:16 GMT 1, That stunning piece that was half blue was 7.5k... The big painting of the face was 12k... Looks like his prices have shot up, but I only saw one orange dot on a drawing for ยฃ800.
My wife and I discussed it on the way home, perhaps it is the board that has driven up the prices and there may not be a market for his new expensive pieces.
Or maybe we are wrong. It was purely conjecture on our behalf and we know nothing!
But if I had of had 7.5k I would have been tempted, but for that money I would get myself a Matt Small original.

Think it's more to do with Bonhams... to be honest I think it's a bad move by Red Propeller, one swallow does not a summer make. By keeping the prices reasonable I have no doubt that Guy would have sold out last night and would be the talk (well after Nick Walker!) of the forum, now they've set themselves (and Guy) up in an awkward situation...

Guy Denning's show last night, by Neate Michael on Feb 7, 2008 12:18:28 GMT 1, Bonhams was only the night before? Do you really think they would whack up prices on the back of that?
Surely it is the same route as Conor H and Matt Small, their prices have rocketed. We went to the This is England show a few Saturday's after and you could still buy a few pieces... Same with Conor H... And now looks the same with Guy...

Yes... I believe people who asked them about prices before the Bonhams auction were told that prices were "up in the air"

Guy Denning's show last night, by Neate Michael on Feb 7, 2008 12:29:34 GMT 1, Well, i asked on email on Monday and was told the prices were 3 - 12k which is consistent with what we saw last night. I would like to believe they didn't whack up the prices.
As you say though, one painting going for 8k doesn't mean they all will...

Guy Denning's show last night, by romanywg on Feb 7, 2008 12:36:59 GMT 1, One went for 8k the other was the only piece in the whole show that didn't make more than its bottom estimate. Personally I thought they looked completely out of place in an 'Urban Art' sale.

I have to agree completely with you here MM.. Time will tell but I think they may live to regret this and it seems prices were not set and were pending the results of Bonhams!
Guy seems to have a nice fan base, me being included in that and we have now just been pushed out of the market, at least as far as the RP pieces go... Hopefully other galleries that represent Denning will not fallow suit and make this same mistake...
with all of that said, I truly have to give Guy the credit he deserves for some of the best work he has produced to date, Lilith s one of the most amazing pieces I have seen and I'm sure it is even better in the flesh!!! Maybe I'm just mad because I can't afford the 12.5k to own her...

Guy Denning's show last night, by scavos on Feb 7, 2008 13:23:26 GMT 1, I have to agree with you both MM and photo. Yes this is Guy's strongest body of work to date but that is some leap in price that doesn't seem to feel right. I strongly suspect this has more to do with RP than it does with Guy. I certainly feel somewhat left behind and sadly I'm now even less likely to own a canvas. Lilith - up there in his best 3 paintings imo. Beautiful and haunting.

Guy Denning's show last night, by Bram on Feb 7, 2008 13:33:23 GMT 1, I am guessing that the Bonhams auction had an influence on these prices (maybe 10 - 20%). I think the prices would have moved up regardless as Guy is progressive both as an artist and as a commercial entity.
Although these pieces look stunning and maybe time will tell us that they are worth every penny, I've got to agree with MM that RP have put them selfs in a bit of a corner (what happens if most of the pieces don't sell.). I also agree with Photoxtc, that the true fan base (me included) have just been priced out of the new show.
Glad I got my canvas before this new phase as I don't think I would have been able to afford one now.
RP mentioned that they had overseas interest (hence the buy online.). I'm not sure if this means they were led to believe the pieces had big money chasing them (russia) or if this was some spin to open the show online.
I hope that Guy and RP have a good show as they both deserve it and it would be nice to think that my little painting has gone up in value but I stil feel these pieces are 25 - 33% too much.

Guy Denning's show last night, by Red Propeller on Feb 7, 2008 14:08:56 GMT 1, Due to the overwhelming response to the high prices at Guys show last night - which was largely due to the additional commission and expense of Red Propeller running a show at a commercial gallery space in London we have renegotiated with the East West gallery - they have agreed to waive their commission in favour of a flat rent for the use of the space for the duration of the show and consequently the new work will universally be re priced less the 30% commission they were going to be taking.
A BIG, BIG thankyou to David and Jill at the East West Gallery for taking this course of action and being so supportive of not only Red Propeller but also recognising the value and quality of Guys work and supporting an important emerging artist.
New prices will take effect from 6pm this evening.

Guy Denning's show last night, by Bram on Feb 7, 2008 15:56:43 GMT 1, Red Propeller, that is a brave and admirable move. I suggest that puts these piece at a very good price and would think that they should be moving pretty quick.
"The Lilith" at ยฃ8750 is a good price and the "we watched it come down" a bargain at ยฃ2800.
Well done.

Guy Denning's show last night, by Bram on Feb 7, 2008 21:50:39 GMT 1, Makes some sense to me. RP wasn't going to get the gallery for free so had to mark up the pieces for more plus they have took notice of the feedback and addressed it. Hats off to RP I say, could have stuck to the original prices. Guy deserves to be going to the next phase in price points its just that the prices were too much too soon but now are very realistic.

Guy Denning's show last night, by reznyce on Feb 8, 2008 1:16:43 GMT 1, I think Guy's work deserves these kind of prices. My opinion may be self-serving since I own these three beautiful pieces. I'm glad I bought them before the surge:
