Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by bobbymeachamjr on Sept 25, 2007 23:25:03 GMT 1, I've bought from them in the past - last one in july YOU CAN FORGET IT IF YOU ARE EVEN REMOTELY THINKING ABOUT GETTING ANY SEMBLANCE OF A DEAL. You'll be paying a premium price. That is, pretty much higher than anywhere else. Its for people who have disposable cash - peeps who don't follow day to day the prices on ebay...
Has anyone bought anything through Bloomsbury Auctions before? And do they start the bidding at their low estimate number, or at more 'reasonable' starting points? Thanks!

This is the question I'm most interested in getting an answer to.

Also bear in mind that: "If your bid is successful a premium of 19% (on the first Β£150,000 of a single lot and 10% thereafter) will be added to the hammer price."

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by RBK on Sept 25, 2007 23:42:16 GMT 1, That's why I'm trying to figure out if it is even worth it to register - if they start the auctions at the low estimate amount it's probably not worth it. A bunch for sale on the 12th.

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by pezlow on Sept 26, 2007 7:10:21 GMT 1, They will probably run the auction through liveauction on ebay rk. They do start the initial bids at slightly lower than estimate unless they have more than one commission bid on the books. Bobby's comments are right, certainly for the banksy prints. If you are after some other artists who are not so hot there are bargains to be had....

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by christoffero on Sept 26, 2007 7:50:23 GMT 1, I watched the last auction at Bloomsbury and was logged on to bid. It's certainly the place to sell as the prices went mad. The prices on ebay for Micallef and others including the Hirst exhibition posters shot up within hours on the back of it.

All auctions start at below lower estimate which is effectively the reserve price. Many auction houses also typically sell at 10% below the lower estimate too - it just varies from auction house to auction house, from item to item and from vendor to vendor. Hope this helps!

All auction houses will allow you to set a reserve on a piece, although often the auctioneer will exercise his discretion and sell at, say 90% of the reserve.
The big auction houses charge you an unsold fee if the item you are selling does not hit its reserve

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by endtimes on Oct 14, 2007 7:11:59 GMT 1, Any mention on these forums about the overall weak sales at Bloomsbury last week?
A Banksy canvas went for Β£12k I think - the opening bid was supposed to be twice that but got cut due to weak prices. Applause went for Β£500 a Signed Grannies went for Β£3000 ...which means the seller will get net about Β£2500! Although a couple prints did sell well.
BUT a 21CL litho went for only Β£3800!!!
Like I said before ...the party's over.
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
Glad to see things cooling off and send a message to the flippers and speculators that there's no such thing as a sure bet in art. Not even with the coveted Banksy.

Party's over ? ha ha.. it's only just begun mate. Bloomsbury auction was a shambles..a bunch of unsigned prints, a BBQ top without prov and one unframed HW. And held at probably the most exciting week for art all year. Massive competition from everywhere...there just wasn't the interest from punters to go to the auction... badly timed, badly promoted, nothing to get people in..
The Canvas you mention didn't sell (28k reserve), The 21stC didn't sell (6k reserve), Grannies 3k...no big deal.. Applause 750 with premium etc..
So sorry dude.. as for the party analogy.. not much of a party, you seen the price of the drinks ?

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by endtimes on Oct 14, 2007 14:26:48 GMT 1, ha ha... If there was a 28k reserve on the canvas why did the opening bid get slashed from 24k to 12k?
Anyway it doesn't matter you can put a reserve of a million on your print, who cares, the point is this stuff isn't even coming close to the reserve price that the greedy ass sellers are asking for. Serves them right as they'll now have to pay an auction fee and expenses even if it didn't sell. Applause may have been Β£750 with premium but the seller took home about Β£400! That's the main point. (That people are and may be taking a loss ) And the other point is that this stuff isn't exactly a slam dunk in the fickle fine art community.
You can try and make excuses about "competition" and that's why prices are hurting not just there but on ebay as well. If you don't want to see the writing on the wall I can't help you. And I hope all of the folks that were screaming don't sell your prints now! (two-three months ago when prices were loopy) Because there's no place to go but up and they'll be worth even more in a couple more months β get their arse handed to them.

Sorry, mybad thought you were into Banksy and maybe bought some years ago for 50 quid.. oh, sorry again, not years.. year.. 74.99 last year weren't they. So hopefully people who want to support the work, can get one too. Maybe your rage should be directed on another forum...

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by endtimes on Oct 14, 2007 15:54:03 GMT 1, Are you ranting? Venting? What's your point? I've seen plenty of people who bought Banksy prints for 50 quid come on this forum and try to squeeze thousands out of people. Are these the people into "Banksy's work and values" you speak of? You got a point?

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by bobbymeachamjr on Oct 14, 2007 17:19:13 GMT 1, I've already stated my position that there will be many 5 dollar bins for prints selling currently for hundreds @retail. It'll take another 2-3 years. That said theres still plenty of "money to be made" right now. Signed Trolleys will easily sell for 5K gbp. The notion of "The Canvas you mention didn't sell (28k reserve), The 21stC didn't sell (6k reserve)..." is absurd - ITS BAD THAT IT DIDNT SELL Lol. Worth repeating, something is worth as much as somebody is willing to pay for it

Bloomsbury Auctions π¬π§, by endtimes on Oct 14, 2007 17:38:06 GMT 1, Who cares about the reserve. The point is it could ony fetch Β£3800 for a 21CL at an esteemed auction house where typically prices are MUCH higher than ebay. When something gets "bought in" at auction or the opening bid gets halved it's a bad thing and people notice.
And sure trolleys is obviously going to be a slam dunk if you're one of the 1 in 100 people that will score one off of POW, duh. What's NOT a slam dunk is buying one off of ebay for Β£5000 next month and thinking it will double again in a month or even a year. It might, sure, but after the past couple weeks, folks better realize now that you can lose money buying and selling Banksy prints. Several people just lost a lot of money after the Bloomsbury auctions.
