Guy Denning. What next?, by hendrix on Nov 19, 2007 18:57:57 GMT 1, Whatโs next for Guy Denning, sure the red propeller show was a hit and as it stands today all the pieces have sold. I myself love Guy's work and have purchased several prints. I recently tried to sell Minator Woman on eBay, over 200 views and 12 watchers but no bids. I find it incredible that people are still buying the beejoir s.b.f.o for over ยฃ200.00 pounds yet a print like Minotaur woman with a starting bid at ยฃ150.00 fails to attract a single bid. You may detect I'm a bit annoyed and you would be right. I hold my hands up I bought this pieces as a kind of savings fund for Christmas not arsed about making a profit but just so I didnโt blow the ยฃ195.00 on some crap. (drugs and booze) I feel like a farepak victim. Donations welcome, please make cheques payable to the Hendrix Christmas fund. ;D Seriously what is next up for Mr Denning. p.s no offence to those who spent more on the s.b.f.o cause I no thereโs a lot who have, also sorry if any members missed out on their Christmas hampers last year. 5p for every ยฃ1 saved is better then nothing. Robbing bastards.

Guy Denning. What next?, by corblimeylimey on Nov 19, 2007 19:24:35 GMT 1, This just proves that buying prints (or even originals for that matter) isn't necessarily an investment. Some of the prints I've bought would struggle to reach what I paid for them even when I didn't buy from the secondary market, that's why you must buy what you like.
It may be the case that the GD fans already own that print or have recently spent out on something new. I for one can't carry on spending on art indefinitely, there's just not enough money or wall space to do that.
As for Guy Denning, he's doing nothing wrong, in fact he's doing very well at the moment and the future is looking good for him, an artists merit has nothing to do with rising prices.

Not having a pop, but why did you purchase a print just so that you could have christmas funds (art goes up + down - just look at Micallef prices this year!)... Surley a place like Northern Rock would have been better suited to house your hard earned cash AS for GD, he has seems to me to be having quite a good year - all/most of his work has sold out from what I know and I believe that he is getting a wider fan base.... I for 1 am not a fan, it just doesn't float my boat on any level - might be because it's a bit too dark and bleak for my tastes - but then again Edward Hopper's work is bleak and I love some of that.... Subjectivity is a beaty!!!

Subjectivity is a beaty!!! Like Al, I'm not a Denning fan, as its all a bit night of the living dead for my tastes, but great to see some well executed pieces getting sold at decent prices to people who like them for what they are ( and have a chance to consider their purchase before hand). Alot of the work seen this year has been excellent and a nice progression and maturation of this fledgling scene. Not counting the Banksy LA series ( as we knew what we were getting for the last 2 years) there have been some great pieces released this year ( GIWTBB, city girl, death and glory etc...) with some great new artists coming to light this year ( Denning, Choe, Francis etc...). As nice as wondering how much some pieces will be worth in the future we should be thanking our lucky stars that the scene is developing and progressing to keep us all interested with enough variation to keep us all interested in somethings both old and new. Sorry to waffle but its been a good year ( so far.....)

Guy Denning. What next?, by lastpost on Nov 19, 2007 21:06:29 GMT 1, My problem with Denning is that I think if I had one print, then I am not sure I would want another. This is admittedly a really shallow view of his work...but they all look kinda similar to me. I appreciate they are all obviously quite different thou.

I think the problem with the Denning prints is that they're Giclee's I was v close to buying 3 of them, but couldn't bring myself to part with ยฃ195x3 for an inkjet print....regardless how good a quality they are. I put the cash towards a canvas instead.

Well said buster. An amazing year for art for all tastes. So happy I stumbled across this forum.
Hendrix, I admire your honesty about why you bought the print. Sorry it hasn't worked out for you but as has been suggested, art just doesn't seem to work like that. I personally think Minotaur Woman is one of Denning's best and most powerful works. Yes it's a giclee but a very good quality one. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to seeing the original. I'd be interested to know if GD plans any more linocuts or would consider doing a screenprint or two.

Guy Denning. What next?, by Gallery My Arse on Nov 19, 2007 22:07:54 GMT 1, I agree, Minotaur Woman is a haunting image and Screaming Head is so full of emotion. I wasn't particularly taken with some of the newer images but those two really are top drawer. Along with Devouring Bunny by Ian Francis and the Faile Rampage prints they have been my favourites this year.

Guy Denning. What next?, by Coach on Nov 20, 2007 0:48:46 GMT 1, seems to me that Denning is a passionate artist that people are passionate about. some here are not so keen on his work, and thats of course fine, but shouldnt stop those that are, discussing his work. is this hype? not imo. he has, after all, just had a show. most of the posts i've read have been collectors, not sellars, discussing or merely being proud of pieces they own. that's what this forum is about i think. correct me if i'm wrong.

Mine are tacked away until the decorating's done but Minotaur Woman will be getting a nice big dark brown box frame in the new year.

Sorry mate, I'm perhaps being unnecessarily sarcastic regarding Guy Denning. He's a professional artists, solid set of ethics and a nice manifesto..stylistically it's just a bridge too far for me. I guess the hype from certain members on here just sets me off.
Good luck to the man.
