New gold rush as artist hides bogus bullion bar Evening Standard 18.07.0
Faked fortune: Elisa Ruff admires the 99 bars of "gold"
Artist Paul Insect is hoping to start a second gold rush. He has produced 100 gold-plated solid brass bars, inspired by Hollywood's depiction of gold in films such as The Italian Job and Raiders Of The Lost Ark. All except one are going on sale at the Lazarides Gallery in Soho as individual artworks for more than £1,000 each. The exception is to be hidden somewhere in the streets of London waiting to be discovered. Aspiring treasure-seekers can hunt for the bar with the help of clues on the artist's website, paulinsect.com, from tonight. Insect hopes to make people think while searching because each bar has a bite mark taken out of it "to embody London's hunger for material wealth". He said: "This work is about making Londoners look more closely at their environment. "Hopefully, they will see things they don't normally notice on the street, whether that's a billboard or a bullion bar." Whoever finds the mock bullion can apply to the gallery for a certificate of authentification. The rest of the fake hoard will go on display on Friday. The bars were made for Insect by a one-man foundry in Bradford before being coated in 18-carat gold. The whole process took three months. While the entire collectionhas been valued at around £100,000 that is still less than a single pure gold bar of the same size. Gold is currently selling at record prices and a similar bar would cost around £120,000, the artist said. The exhibition, Bullion, also includes paintings and screen prints. It runs until 18 August. Anyone wishing to see a genuine gold bar can do so at the Bank of England Museum. In 1998 it mounted an entire exhibition dedicated to the diversity of gold bars available internationally. They included the kilobar, the world's most widely traded small gold bar, "tezabi" bars, rough cast in Pakistan by backyard manufacturers to a theoretical 99.9 per cent purity, and commemorative bars marking important historical dates.

Insect Show?, by Strange Al on Jul 18, 2007 19:07:35 GMT 1, Interesting - "Insect hopes to make people think while searching because each bar has a bite mark taken out of it "to embody London's hunger for material wealth"". So what are those people paying over £1K for a "bullion" bar meant to think?
