Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by mikeo on Jan 5, 2009 15:00:25 GMT 1, Oh, and another thing... for new artists, I expect to see several of them having people in their corner making sure that what needs to sell, sells. Personally, if I had deeper pockets, I'd be taking advantage of Dreweatts willingness to provide a platform to newer artists by negotiating private sells in advance of the auction with quite a few of them, and then purchasing a piece at Dreweatts for well over market. (In essence, doing what probably happened with Nick Walker's "Mona Simpson" at Bonhams.) Frankly, for artists who are consigning their own works, 30% commission is a small price to pay - I don't know why any of them wouldn't resort to shill bidding their way into bigger auction houses.
Sad but true, and I too expect shill bidding to be rife.
I'm still amazed that so many people were prepared to pay silly money for Nick Walker based on that one, dodgy, auction result. Speculative greed certainly seems to have been a prime mover in the 'urban art' scene for the last 18 months or so and that, particularly in the current financial climate, is not sustainable. I expect a lot of unsold lots.
I certainly don't expect the flotsam of the scene, as promised by Drewatts, to gain the kind of Nick Walker price-boost effect based on their hoped for half decent auction results, any time soon. What I do expect is a line up, especially at Drewatts, that will mostly make me embarrassed to be a collector of this type of art..

Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by mikeo on Jan 5, 2009 15:35:56 GMT 1, Closer to ยฃ50K wasn't it? i.e. ridiculously overpriced relative to anything he had sold before.
In the short to medium term, those that speculated on a rising urban art market, when everything, even the most medioce prints by the most mediocre artists, increased in value, are going to get burned.
