I can't see the market (for want of a better word) suddenly putting realistic reserves on lots.
So expect lots of unsold lots

Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by ricobenfico on Jan 4, 2009 20:50:06 GMT 1, Doesn't the seller put the reserve on the piece rather than the auction house. So it would be the sellers who have to be more realistic (taking into consideration the market, the fee's etc)?

from the dreweatts site...
"The Urban Art collection contains works by the leading national and international street artists of today, such as, Banksy, Nick Walker, Adam Neate, Faile, Antony Micallef, Guy Denning, Bast, Seen, Aiko, Matt Small, D*Face, Doze Green, alongside several artists who will be creating work primarily for the sale, such as Goldie, Ame 72, CBloxx, Inkie, Dan, Mau Mau, Eelus, K-Guy, Rowdy, Flx, Silent Hobo, David Walker, Pinky, Ryca, Jim Starr, SPQR, Motorboy, Kev Munday and joined by auction virgins, Chu, Partism, Pam Glew, Faith 47, Klit, TRXTR, Byroglyphics and Grafter. "
Without being too pessimistic it does seem that it's not a line up filled with the big names from the scene and it may be an auction with low sell prices.
Having said that i was impressed by some of the work in the last dreweatts auction so maybe some of the lesser known artists may produce some great pieces.
I know in the past people have moaned that certain artists were too fresh for auction but it does seem like dreweatts are trying to create a new niche in the urban art auction world where loads of lesser known artists can show. Hopefully for all involved their work will do well, although the credit crunch might affect sales unless reserves are realistic...

I had huge doubts about Dreweatts working directly with artists at their first auction, and those doubts have been multiplied by the 2 auctions that they've had to date. This is such a bad idea for the artists concerned. Dreweatts have no interest in nurturing their career coupled with the state of the economy, the lack of history in this area for Dreweatts can only lead to an absolute lottery as to prices achieved and resultant expectations on the part of the artists. Get out on the streets, work together to create shows, control your own destiny - but to go down this route for me is not the right thing to do.

actually it doesnt really but it still seems a bit rude to the artists/galleries

The only positive thing I can see from these auctions will be for buyers of a few nice pieces that they want at good prices
Otherwise a lot of unsold lots and sellers unsold fees, and talk of doom and gloom, the end of the world and that kinda stuff.

Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by raiden on Jan 5, 2009 6:16:37 GMT 1, I'm registering to buy at Dreweatts and probably will skip Bonhams, but that's because I expect more bargains at the Dreweatts auction and it appeals to me more - especially since a decent portion of the pieces will likely be directly consigned by the artists. Eelus consigned a piece directly, I'd imagine the same for Pam Glew, but I haven't asked her. (really excited to hear she's going to have work in the auction)
As for which will be better - no crystal ball, but I'd assume Bonhams overall will see better. Though certain works may do better at Dreweatts - primarily less establish, just catching heat artists. (i.e. the last show - Banksy did relatively weak at Dreweatts whereas Eelus saw really good results that I couldn't imagine being much better at Bonhams)

Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by raiden on Jan 5, 2009 14:18:51 GMT 1, Oh, and another thing... for new artists, I expect to see several of them having people in their corner making sure that what needs to sell, sells.
Personally, if I had deeper pockets, I'd be taking advantage of Dreweatts willingness to provide a platform to newer artists by negotiating private sells in advance of the auction with quite a few of them, and then purchasing a piece at Dreweatts for well over market. (In essence, doing what probably happened with Nick Walker's "Mona Simpson" at Bonhams.)
Frankly, for artists who are consigning their own works, 30% commission is a small price to pay - I don't know why any of them wouldn't resort to shill bidding their way into bigger auction houses.

Any Urban Art Auctions 2009?, by rosstierney on Jan 5, 2009 14:28:09 GMT 1, i know it's not a nice thing to think about (shill bidding) but each piece has an estimate (the reserve can't be higher than the estimate) so you know roughly how much you need to bid at least
you should also stick to what you're prepared to pay (inc. fees) & do not be taken in by the faรงade
