A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by lee3 on Sept 25, 2008 21:43:50 GMT 1, A complete set of Kate Moss prints which I'm surprised to see listed in an evening sale but good for him. Likewise, a Queen Vic painting that should do quite well. I'm fond of whatever collector scooped up 10 different small Warhol skull paintings and is letting them go as one complete lot.
There are a couple other Banksy's in the day sale too. Here is a link to the evening catalog which was just released

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by G-Man on Sept 26, 2008 13:00:26 GMT 1, I was at a dinner on Tues and chatting to a fine art dealer who dealt in pieces worth ยฃ40k - 60k and she said that she was in the 'Marks and Spencer' bracket of the art world
This stuff is definatley in the 'Bond Street' bracket
Looking at the prices for this stuff really puts it all into perspective, the most expensive thing in my collection is worth about ยฃ3K and I'm proud of that... I dont think that art in these price ranges will ever be gracing my walls the only way I'll be seeing this kind of stuff is on gallery walls
I'm in the 'Primark' bracket when it comes to collecting art!

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by lee3 on Sept 26, 2008 16:44:56 GMT 1, >>>Those gold Monas by Warhol are sooo boring and uninspired it is incredible - decades into his career and he was pumping out that tedious crap!?! <<<<
Boring to you? Perhaps. Unispired? That I have to disagree with. Warhol was the most prolific artist that's ever been on this planet and among the most influential as well. Even he said he was running out of ideas in '82 when he returned from dinner with a lobster bib and promptly took a photo for what would become the screen to the lobster paintings. A lot of stuff from the early 80s looks dated to me as well. And that's a big reason why he was getting/squeezing what he could from the other talented artists of the day like his collaborations with Basquiat.
But, my god if he didn't hit the cover off the ball with his final show (fright wigs) and his final compositions paying homage to Da Vinci including this Mona Lisa painting and the Last Supper paintings. They may not be for everyone but to me they are much more than just some screens of the Moma Lisa when one understands how important that image was to him as he began painting it way back in '62 or '63 with vibrant colors at the beginning of his non commercial career and would paint it from time to time until his death. Further, the inspiration is a direct result of the relationship to the Kennedy's whom Warhol was infatuated with (who wasn't in the early 60's). But, I'm a sucker for art within art as is the case with these compositions. Add into the equation with this particular painting that he did it on gold which he only reserved for his finest pieces and today carry by far the largest premium to any other color (with silver a close second).
All the more ironic considering the Kate Moss prints in the same sale (and so much more of Banksy's work even down to the way he creates much of his work) is so obviously influenced by Andy. The primary reason the Kate Moss images carry the kind of premium they do imho, is because Marilyn, even more than Campbell's soup, is the most important image that Warhol (and consequently Pop Art) ever produced.
Personally, I see little difference between Warhol paying homage to da Vinci and Banksy to Warhol. Sorry, I got carried a way on a tangent avoiding work here but that's my long winded way of saying there was more than a little inspiration for that painting.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by chief on Sept 26, 2008 18:19:48 GMT 1, So I take it that's the original Queen Vic print correct? Obviously the print of 500 I have isn't worth no where near that.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by Richard on Sept 26, 2008 18:26:15 GMT 1, That Queen Victoria is pure sex. Queen Vic is my favourite Banksy and I am proud that I own the print. Only wish I could afford this!
I wonder what it will go for!
Thinking about it, is it not the one that was for sale on the Laz site...

I don't believe so but could be mistaken. I have a .pdf with the Laz piece which states it's from an edition of 2. The one that Laz has/d is in a different frame than the one for sale at Sotheby's.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by jam on Sept 26, 2008 19:15:53 GMT 1, Steve had this one as well... since Santas Ghetto '02 I believe. There are two versions, this 1/1 with a full image including legs, and the other with them cropped as seen in the print version. The price has certainly gone up since then, amazing that it didn't sell back then.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by lee3 on Sept 29, 2008 21:21:33 GMT 1, Christie's turn- I dig the Freud Girl Reading canvas the most from the evening sale. Interesting to see the Bacon portrait of Freud. I really like the Warhol double Marilyn and the 9 marilyn reversal canvases and that green Basquiat. Another Richard Prince nurse for over $5m US? Link to the evening sale below....

No Banksy in the Christie's evening sale but plenty in the day sale along with Nick Walker, Faile, Vaughn, Neate, and Blek too.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by lee3 on Sept 30, 2008 16:08:36 GMT 1, >>>I'm probably missing the point here lee, but what does the sale being in the evening have anything to do with it? <<<<
The evening sale for Sotheby's and Christie's are reserved for the best of the best (or someone consigning something magnificent and agreeing only to do so if such and such is included in the evening sale). On average the evening sales have much fewer lots than the morning or day sales but have significantly higher prices. It is MUCH harder to even get into and witness an evening sale in person as opposed to anyone being able to go in and watch a day sale.
Over the years, I've seen very few prints included in an evening sale. I don't believe I've ever seen a complete set of Warhol soup cans even hit the evening sales. The only Warhol complete sets I've seen in the evening are Mao's (one complete set of these is in one of the day sales this fall) and the Marilyn's. That's it. So, to see a 3 year old set of Banksy prints was more than a little surprising (borderline shocking) to me. It's probably due to the fact that it's one of only 6 complete sets according to the descritption and the fact that these are quickly getting to the level that Warhol's Marilyn prints exchange hands for. Of course, there are 2500 of the Warhol's (printed in '67 so who knows how many have survived) and I believe less than 250 of the Banksy's Moss prints (I've seen editions of 30 and I believe some others too but have never kept track- so someone please correct me). Regardless, it is the only set of prints this fall by any artist in an evening sale (Sotheby's/Christie's) so it shows you the priority they are placing on the artist given the fact they were screened only 3 years ago.
Edcase, yes.
