New show - Paul Insect, by slowmo on Mar 15, 2007 23:22:03 GMT 1, Had a look, some nice stuff, but more and more this scene is getting exposed. Once again the place was full to burst with people not looking at art but enjoying the drink. Had to wait to get in, not a bad thing if I wasn't looking through to just see that people were staying for the free drink.
What I am saying is, stop the free drink on preview night. I see it as an opportunity to get first refusal on art you might want but more and more it is just a free drink and you cant see the art.
Sorry, rant over

I see want you're saying, but preview evenings have always had the drink and I don't see it changing. It does make things more social and give it a bit of a party atmosphere, afterall it's a celebration with the artist on the release/first showing of their new work.
It probably helps a few people part with their money too.

New show - Paul Insect, by slowmo on Mar 16, 2007 11:09:27 GMT 1, Thats true in the right place. Leonard street got it right, the bar was nowhere near any art so people in a permanent que to get drinks don't stop you from getting near to work you want to look at.
Last night, the venue was small and people were in the way of the art trying to get drinks, try as I might I could not get near to a piece I liked that was behind the bar.

New show - Paul Insect, by Macdeee on Mar 16, 2007 12:09:19 GMT 1, I only saw one, but it was real nice.
It was very busy and to be honest I was not blown away by much of the work for sale.

New show - Paul Insect, by ziggy on Mar 16, 2007 12:29:20 GMT 1, I agree it was pretty busy but it's a small gallery so I don't really know what they could do. Having drinks is kinda nice, afterall it's the social side of the art scene. And as cormblimey said, it's a celebration for the artists, their friends and collectors. I was lucky enough to get in early (was not well so wanted to get home) and it was easy to have a quick look around. Really liked the Rankin portrait by Blamire (think that was the name), edition of 10, it was the one made up of coloured swatch circles and the Paul Insect print (one off). The Faile preview was rammed and so was TLSG (got there late), I struggled to see much of the art downstairs as it was so rammed and smokey. A think the point I'm making is ALL previews are rammed unless it's not interesting and then you wouldn't want to go.

New show - Paul Insect, by stylus on Mar 17, 2007 16:40:30 GMT 1, In the end, I decided to go down in the day time, after the preview night. My girlfriend and were the only people in there. There's some really cool stuff (like 'Trevor Jackson' by Ian Wright). But my fave piece is the 'Mother! Oh god, Mother!' by Gregory Gilbert-Lodge. I've ordered one. It's £300 in a good frame from Cosh. Here's his website: www.gilbert-lodge.com.
Not exactly street art... but some really good stuff. The guy in Cosh says he's planning to put on a Gilbert-Lodge exhibition soon...

I've got a silver and black version of this silkscreen framed that I would consider selling or swopping, PM if your interested. Cosh only had a couple of them and they were all sold out a while back.
