David Choe - Dirty Hands Documentary, by Matt-lock on Jun 22, 2008 8:59:20 GMT 1, I just came back from the premiere tonight here in LA and it was such a highly entertaining documentary. You really get to see him at his highest, lowest, funniest, and saddest moments in the last decade or so. He got up and spoke a bit after the showing which was pretty cool.
Did anybody else go tonight?? I highly recommend it to anybody that has a chance to see it.

Priorities Lee.... you have only been waiting a year for your sons birthday, but well over a year for the Choe preview, it should be a no brainer mate!, quick unrelated question for you also, I am assuming you bought your City girl original before the print was released, if this was the case, did you have any say in the print process? i.e, did you have to give your consent for the image to be used, then submit it for copying, or had it already been scanned/photographed ready to be made into a print?, do you have any rights as the owner of the original image, or do they lie soley with the artist?..... (by rights, I mean could you have stopped this image been made into a print if you wanted?)

M:
I contacted Choe after I had City Girl asking for a painting of a whale which eventually became a commissioned piece that I posted some photos of a while back (he recently added them to his blog.) Anyway, he very politely asked me if i would mind loaning it out to his buddy Andrew to photograph for a print release and put all kind of disclaimers on the email letting me know I was more than welcome to say no. Personally, I never hesitated and replied within 5 minutes that they could do whatever they wish with it.
Long story short, Andrew paid a visit to my home, took the painting and worked his magic over a week or two and returned it a short time later. Both of them could not have been more nice and appreciative of the whole process. In turn, they gave me #1 of 150 at no cost which I recently had framed and a buddy wanted one of the prints so he gave Andrew the money and got #2. As anyone knows who's seen it in person, it's a knock out print and is the only print I have hung in my home. It's VERY interesting to look at the composition in a tighter and smaller package and notice different details and then go study them in the room with the painting.
As for your query about rights to the painting, I have no idea. They can use the image as they choose without my consent and I suppose I can prosper on paper as more and more people get the image stamped on their brain. Long term it means I get to spend LESS time with the painting as I lend it out to Choe retrospective shows at museums in 10 or 15 years.
As for priorities, first birthdays are the worst. We told all of our friends to keep away so that we could have the day for the 3 of us only to end up spending an ungodly amount of time skyping with every single relative giving us their best. Nearly 8 hours of phone calls and video conferences! We should have just bolted for LA and had a sitter watch our son while we took in Dirty Hands and relaxed all day yesterday. I'm constantly learning as a new father and won't make the same mistake ever again. Of course, if they get to work on Dirty hands 2 right now, that won't be out until he's 11.

David Choe - Dirty Hands Documentary, by mydeaddogwontwoof on Jun 23, 2008 19:37:18 GMT 1, Thanks for the reply Lee (& Lil Bird), I find it really interesting how these things work, you are really lucky fella, City girl is such a great picture, I have a couple of copies of the print (one for the wall, & a spare in case the wall falls down), I also have it as the desktop background on my PC, works PC & PS3, probably spend a good 3-4 hours a day looking at it, but still don't tire of it, its a modern classic!, with regards to 1st birthdays, I worked out a shift system for family visits last year for my daughters 1st, thought it wise as my parents are long divorced and putting them in a room together would be comparable to two taunted pit bulls, but alas, I fucked it up and gave them both the same time, I wont go into details, but my little boys 1st in August will be spent away from home and family, they can phone in their birthday wishes & view the pictures online, it's just safer that way!......

David Choe - Dirty Hands Documentary, by Heavyconsumer on Jun 24, 2008 2:45:14 GMT 1, why do you entertain this bloated egocentric talentless s**te ? all fail, all the time
Do you honestly believe this is a smart approach to making a point or eliciting a reasonable response? Or are you simply venting rhetorical vitriol that reflects your own state of being? Either way, this comes across as a little stupid. Why do ignorant people have such a hard time accepting that art is not necessarily crap, simply because they don't like it? Please take a few moments to follow this link and scroll down the page, before repeating your ludicrous and baseless claim, that Choe is talentless. Then we'll know for certain that you are a few sandwiches short of a picnic and to ignore you in future.
