Grafter "Wisdom", by My Name is Frank on Oct 15, 2008 23:04:24 GMT 1, Been debating whether to post this since the weekend but thought sod it, gotta give credit where credit's due. Received a tube from Grafter a couple of days ago and feel the need to say that I'm seriously impressed with my purchase (his latest piece "Wisdom"). Much has been said about his work on here, most of it positive and some of it damn rude. But there was something about his latest piece that drew me in. And at ยฃ60 I thought "why not". The attention to detail and technique is superb. Having cut a couple of stencils in my time I can appreciate the patience and effort gone in to making this piece. That and the purposeful brush stokes of the 2 background layers lift this piece above others (in my opinion ). Looking forward to getting it framed. There, I've said it! Nice one Mr. G. Keep up the good work. Lef

Grafter "Wisdom", by Martin DK on Oct 15, 2008 23:10:50 GMT 1, Youre right Lef, I must admit - The wisdom image is not my favorite, I can see its nicely done, but its not something for me. However, the white splash artwork is completely amazing, classic.

Grafter "Wisdom", by alomondo on Oct 15, 2008 23:16:06 GMT 1, White splash has gone down as one of my best purchases of the year - quality of image, quality of execution, delivery and price - grafter rocks - don't give a damn what anybody says about him.....
Not keen on the new piece - technically brilliant - but misses the statement by about a couple of years for me!
Anyway I think Grafter is a one to watch - might not be cutting it on the whole full on political message front - but his work sure is good to look at - and surely that's why we all respect, buy and admire this stuff??

Does art HAVE to have some clever ironic political statement behind it for it be good these days? Personally, I can't see anything wrong with people producing art that is simply aesthetically pleasing. Call me old fashioned. Lef

Grafter "Wisdom", by Heavyconsumer on Oct 15, 2008 23:30:16 GMT 1, I liked his latest piece a lot and was teetering on the edge of buying it, hoping to offset it against my other piece of his (Make a wish). However the missus isn't very keen on portraits generally and this piece wasn't something she wanted on the wall near the "Make a wish," which will be in the living room/hallway. Big fan of the man himself and although not every image has done it for me, it's easy to see the work he puts into his art and this latest piece was the epitomy of that imo. Keep up the sterling work Grafter!
Leftery, I'd love to see images of the framed up piece eventually. Please post some.

Grafter "Wisdom", by Cocteau 101 on Oct 16, 2008 0:04:38 GMT 1, Well said leftery, there is even elitism in urban art which is meant to be for all etc etc with some of the snobbery towards Grafter. I really like Grafter's work, I loved the first image of the old guy with the cap, More Than You Could Know, if I remember correctly and pm'd Grafter at the time. We exchanged pm's and found we had an affinity in certain areas. He kindly sent me a gift print sometime later for encouraging him at the start. He is a top bloke who's work is really well executed but more than that makes a connection. It might not be ironic etc but it's the feeling behind the work that gets to me. I've heard people deride his stuff which seems to be missing the point and as has been mentioned the splash image is just a lovely image. Fair play to the guy I hope he continues to be successful.

Grafter "Wisdom", by jsydney on Oct 16, 2008 1:27:09 GMT 1, I think there's also something to be said for having a message that isn't political. The eskimo image is one of my favorites (and first to frame up when i get my new apartment), and while it doesn't make an ironic comment about war or a police state, it still may have a "message" in the larger sense. I get a tremendous sense of isolation from eskimo, the straightforward black face on the white background is a picture of mankind on the outskirts of society...the white paper reminiscent the expanses of snow that might be surrounding the child. Now, that might not be what the piece is "about," it might not be "about" anything, but the feelings that come out of it are message enough...keep it up grafter! I find your work deep and meaningful in every sense, despite the lack of snarky political humor.

Grafter "Wisdom", by Grafter on Oct 16, 2008 10:57:36 GMT 1, What a great way to start the morning...... Thanks for all the nice comments and it's great to see that so many of you are enjoying my work and are interpretting it for what it means to you.....That's what it's all about. I try and stick to what I know I do best and I believe that every face tells it's own story and hopefully the message, if there is one, is written all over the subjects face.
I've been busy lately getting ready to paint a wall at Upfest this Sunday in Bristol and am really excited at getting some feedback on several new pieces i'll be painting for the 1st time. I don't want to give the whole game away yet, but here's a sneak peek selection of some of them.....
Hope you like them and if you're at Upfest, come and say hello. It would be great to put some faces to names.
