Shepard Fairey - OBEY - The Sun, by walters on Oct 10, 2009 22:14:20 GMT 1, Can I ask that you dont use words such as "Crap" & "s**t" when describing artists work Its ok not to like it, but to use words like that crosses the line, and does not really show any respect to the Artist or other forum members who might like the art. Thank you.
crosses what line? are we in primary school here?? why would we want to show respect to an artist if the work is shit? were not slobering bum kissing suck ups here, were people who appreciate art,and what shep is doing/has been doing lately is producing absolute shit.
i would never ever dream of slagging off art on the new artists board, and i very rarely slag of anything but sheps weekly prints are laughable at best. i should be free to use whichever words i like to some up my opinion of art.
get a grip man.

Shepard Fairey - OBEY - The Sun, by raiden on Oct 12, 2009 7:43:52 GMT 1, Yeah, I have to agree with Harveyn.
Lets put this in perspective. Any artist who puts out 20+ prints a year, will have a serious miss - especially if they are taking risks. Obviously, artists like Audrey Kawasaki won't have a major miss, because she is basically doing the same pretty girls motif. But someone like Shep will, and I can think of a bad example from pretty much every urban artist - though some are clearly more consistent than others - for one, Mr. B's IMO hasn't done anything totally atrocious.
To question Sheps overall artistic talent off of one complete misfire, when he really has done some very brilliant work, is taking it a bit far.

Just wish the prints had a bit more of his style lately but looks like he has been on tour with Z-trip so maybe the last few releases were done by his staff??

Shepard Fairey - OBEY - The Sun, by nah on Oct 12, 2009 17:54:57 GMT 1, All you whining morons have to realise that these prints are not for your consumption. These are 'throwaway' cheap posters for young impressionable students with little change to spend. Something to put on the walls with blu tack or wipe your ass with them. They are not designed to make the buyers wealthy through flipping. The fine art works are another thing altogether. TWO DISTINCT avenues of his masterplan. So the image sucks, so what? For $45 you are not going to get a miracle every day.
good point

Shepard Fairey - OBEY - The Sun, by sand on Oct 13, 2009 15:08:56 GMT 1, I think people seem to forget that Shep's work isn't just about selling prints. His large scale fine art stencils and collages are stunning. Anyone who went to his show @ Stolen Space can testify that.
Also even the weakest print can be made to look amazing and powerful as part of a larger collage...just look at his recent work in Amsterdam...

I think it's fantastic that he sells his work for $45. It maybe a bit of hit and miss on the print front...but no one can doubt his ability.

There's typos in the first ed which is a screenprint and limited to 300 (?) but there's also a larger offset edition of 750 with the typos fixed.
That said as I'm a Brit I could probably claim a few more

Maybe that means he should be more selective about the crap he churns out.
And to say Fairey takes risks? I completely disagree, he's stuck in his comfort zone. He's rarely creative enough to even come up with anything that would be considered a risk now.
Perfect example is his revisit of the Obama image for the rolling stone cover. It basically looked like an outtake from the original design. Nothing new or risky addedto the image, just a new version (Photo) of the same old image in the same exact style.
