Hope someone can help me out here, I'm hopefully about to do a trade with some one in the US, I'm in the UK, we will be trading high value prints, but no money is changing hands, my question is how does this affect import tax, can you list it as a trade or gift, but still insure for full value...basically neither of us want to get shafted for import tax, I'm still smarting from the last Hush show

As far as I'm aware, if you want the print to be sent fully insured, you will end up paying some sort of VAT. Unless the sender has separate insurance that covers his collection during transit?

I'm pretty sure the person in the US doesn't have to worry about incurring tax.

If you they (US) mark it up as a gift but insure it to full value, you will most likely get charged full import tax. If you don't insure it and declare value less than £30ish you'll probably be okay but it will be sqeaky bum time till it arrives. If its a small run canvas or limited edition run you may get away with only paying 5% tax. Does the person in the US know anyone travelling to UK so they could bring it? Bought my last two Banksys this way.

buy a cheap ticket split the value in 2 and then have a 1 or 2 days holiday... ihave been to new york many times for £230 return.. dont know about other cities but it may be better if the value its too high.
i know january its too far away but its the best month for really really cheap tickets

if you use fedex i think there is a way to declare a value but insure for more as it has no value bc it is a sample or send it as a document.... they wont open it or check it if its sent as legal documents... its against the law for them to open it... *wink* or you can find a friend in the us and him vice versa and sort it out....

I agree with above posts. Dont risk assigning a lower value to the prints when shipping. If it gets lost or damaged, all you will get back is what you claimed upfront. The downside to higher value, is that you will pay higher VAT. I really like eduarandres post about flying it over. Ive known a few people to do that. Its by far the safest way. Lastly, I dont think fedex (or maybe is was UPS) will insure art. Ive sent well over 100 pieces of art to the UK. The United States post office has been my safest bet. Best of luck.

ups and parcelforce are good, i have used parcelforce once from usa. you will have to pay small amount of import tax, its not that much. good luck with everything neale.

Yeah he has been trying to do a trade with me on my WTM but his poor communication, constant disappearing and no images meant there was no way I would entertain any trade.

I dont agree Biggie, and I promise it wasnt a pop at you, but Silky or the mods should be able to send a mass pm everyone to warn about the flaws of dealing on this forum, and warn all members about this current scammer chap.

There maybe 2 or 3 people set to go to the post-office tomorrow to send something of value to this tosser who have not read this thread
