I'd be willing to hear what prices you're talking about, to hear from the people that paid these prices & what was going through their heads at the time.

Agreed, I'm feeling charitable though so would be happy to start the bidding at £1

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by snausages on Jul 23, 2009 1:01:25 GMT 1, Yup, a lot of fools around here.
So really? It's wrong to steal but not vandalize and dump property on the public? I still don't get it.
Anyway, you know I've never read that piece until today. Hilarious. Hopefully it will be preserved well. Maybe your friend should donate it to a museum or something n such, get a tax deduction maybe?

then you are in the right company!!
There is a clear distinction to me made when it comes to vandalism - are you are referring to individuals who draws, paints, scribbles on walls or property for artistic purposes? Or are you referring to individuals who go around destroying things such as breaking the glass at bus shelters? ripping phone booths apart? keying someones car? or throwing bricks through peoples windows?
As for a museum taking this piece - again without authentication, why would they? If the owner no longer wants the piece, then give it to Pest Control, so they can take it out of circulation.

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by snausages on Jul 23, 2009 1:59:47 GMT 1, Right company? Seriously? Fools part way with their money almost every day on this forum for works of art that will most likely be worthless in 50 years by people that will never be important. Spending money on this piece is hardly the stupidest thing that might have ever happened on this forum. I'm not saying it's worth much but ...
If Pest Control / Banksy wants the piece back, maybe they shouldn't have left it on the street in the first place. It's abandoned property. If it's not abandoned property but vandalised property, then if PC wants to possess it, Banksy should have done it on a slab of stone that he owned. But he didn't so they're out of luck and have no right to it anymore.
And what exactly is "artistic purpose?" How about you explain it to the van owner I know who just got his $20000 van tagged by some punk grafitti "artist," you tell him as he wastes his time and money cleaning that sh*t off that it's not vandalism because it was done with "artistic purpose." Explain how it's so much better than getting keyed. This is all so ridiculous man, it's one or the other. Who decides what has "artistic purpose" and what doesn't? You? The Feds? Give me a break, it's so hypocritical.

so you're saying that people who buy a piece of art that aesthetically pleases them, to hang as a decoration on a wall in their home, are fools because it might depreciate in value? what a ridiculous statement. how much of the stuff you buy for your home, whether it be furniture, cutlery etc., retains it's value? i can't actually believe you've just said that.

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by Simococo on Jul 23, 2009 4:53:28 GMT 1, agreed Ross The fools are those that speculate on the most volatile unregulated market on the earth with the hope of it bursting out of a retirement / malibu condo cake and not truely enjoying what is hanging on their walls ( or more likely in a storage facility / or portfolio)
Again art rearing its elitist head. Maybe one should be given a licence to buy art and then only those with good breeding or a doctorate in art history should be permitted to purchase.
The rest of us will have to steal from the streets .......

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by snausages on Jul 23, 2009 6:31:18 GMT 1, I'm not the one who brought up "fools" but, if you want to define a fool as someone who buys a historic piece of street art, I'm just saying it's a relative scale. And compared to people who pay tens of thousands for art that will probably become worthless pieces of paper, it puts it in better perspective. I wouldn't have even brought up the "foolish" aspect but that's where alsbabar thought there was a good argument...
I really don't care what you do with your money. Unlike everyone else here who wants to demand that you don't spend money on a "sacred" street piece. Spend 10k on a print, car, dining table that will be worthless, I don't care. Spend some money on a work that will always have historic value, for as long as Banksy and street art is relevant than it's not exactly foolish. Poor taste, sure you could argue that, just as much as you could argue vandalizing public and private property is poor taste. Talk about elitist? You could argue that painting your art, name or message on public property so that everyone must pay attention to it is elitist. Depends how you want to spin things.
As for being worthy of a museum, this is more worthy than 99 percent of the stuff bought and sold on this forum, even if it's "value" is low since PC won't "authenticate" it. Even still, in a couple hundred years this will be more historically important than any print. That is if humans are still around and give a damn about this kind of art anymore.

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by alsbabar on Jul 23, 2009 8:47:37 GMT 1, snausages - you should re-read my post, you notice the "?" symbol, and there were a few of them - this symbol is used when a question is being asked. Questions which you still havent answered, but hey ho, you always seem to get on the defensive all too abruptly.
However, you chose to cite a quotation, in the context of this thread, you said "One mans rubbish is another mans treasure", simply implying while some people think this piece in question is worthless because it is a stolen street piece which has no provenance, and could just as easily be a fake, you are saying, while some think it is rubbish, this could turn out to be a bargain for someone else. Lets put things in to context, even when Banksy is long dead and in the ground, do you honestly think Pest Control will ever authenticate such piece? Or that they will simply just go away? It wont happen, you just have to look at how organisations represent and protect the interest of other dead artists, such as Warhol, Haring, the same will apply to Banksy. So historically this piece will always be rendered worthless.
I read this well written, articulated piece by Vandalog, and it sums up why street pieces should be left in the street.
"A bit later on in the afternoon and against my better judgement I had a look at the totally unofficial show of ‘reclaimed’ Banksy work in Covent Garden. Walking up to it and even walking around it you’d be hard pressed to determine that Banksy would have had nothing to do with this show (his verification agency ‘Pest Control’ famously always refuses to authenticate street pieces). Most of the work on display has been lifted off the streets over recent years. Large sections of walls, doors and plaster are amongst the pieces that make up the exhibition. It’s a very soulless look at some of his work with a totally different vibe to the Bristol exhibition. In fact it has no vibe at all. Simple labels next to pieces tell you nothing, not even the city the works have been taken from. Banksy’s street pieces are all about the context of where they are placed and in this empty whitewashed hall they lose an important part of their reasons for existence."

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by trasbash on Jul 23, 2009 10:20:02 GMT 1, Anyhow - Back to the piece. I have pics of it in its current state. Could someone let me know how to post them? In regards to authentication - Will pest control be able to confirm that this is real for me?
I have recieved over 40 messages on this all asking how much do i want for it. To be honest i dont know its value. I have seen simlilar street pieces on board go for over £30k - 50k (like laugh now) at Sothebeys, but open to offers. It is worth noting that this is a unique piece. There is no other versions of this story in existance to my knowledge unlike works like laugh now.

no thats vermin
guide price is one thing - selling price is another (which none of them even received a bid on) - so there is your indicator - they are worth nothing

you will get COA from vermin, but that is worth less than the paper i use to wipe shit off my ass.

I'll start with the opening bid -
£5.00 plus postage without Vermin COA.

Original Banksy for sale - Bear and Bees, by rdl81 on Jul 23, 2009 11:05:19 GMT 1, I think the only person that would buy this would be a banksy fan to whom money is no object as in they can write it off and be happy they that they "may" (no offence intended with this but without COA u could never be 100% sure) own an orginal famous banksy street piece. This may seem like stating the obvious but this is worth whatever someone is willing to pay knowing this. For me it would not be 50p but a few hundred quid others i am sure will be willing to pay much more
